9japride:Religious symbolism have no place in a secular state. Nigerians don't even understand the concept of state and religion and why they must be separate |

Afrojuju2017: They don't. Money wasted on religious activities is enough to set some positive investment. |

Mrfeel: Any religious symbols shouldn't be in any state. Except if those region are an independent country. |

Afrojuju2017:stop being ridiculous. No state has adopted religion yet sharia Is official rooted in the core North, hisba religious police is everywhere destroying alcohol and dictating lifestyle for the people of those states yet no state has adopted any religion. Were you blind when Northern governors allocated huge resources to building mosques and other Islamic religious places? |

sagitariusbaby:A governor from the aouthr east also built a mega dome, I think Umahi. Aregbe also wanted to build a mega chapel around the ife-ilesha axis because according to him there a lot Christian religious leaders who came from that area. It is all nonsensical and senseless use of public funds. And sharia is not an official law in the North, I know you don't like the truth, it's because of people like you that hisbah exist and continue to flout human rights. |

jmichael259:All states are secular states but some states are so religious that alcohol is banned? |
| Re: Alia Unveils New Benue Logo, Anthem Amid Criticism by jmichael259(m): 11:14am On Feb 11, 2025 |
Mrfeel:All states are secular but almost all states are so religious that abortion or homo is banned. *And yes, I stand against those things but I had to mention them because secularly, there's no reason to ban them. The only reason they're banned is because of the religious feelings of people. That is the same reason alcohol is banned. *None of this changes the fact that this country and all 36 states +FCT are secular states entities. Will you be saying the same when the Muslims and Traditionalists start pressing their own demands and installing their own items? You and I know say their own no dey easy to handle. |
| Re: Alia Unveils New Benue Logo, Anthem Amid Criticism by Mrfeel: 11:49am On Feb 11, 2025 |
jmichael259:There is a limit to Nigeria's secularism, no matter how you put it, the foundation of Nigeria itself is religious based, Nigeria and Nigerians put religion, ethnicity above everything that concerns Nigeria, abortion and homo is a national ban , and all over the country you will come across laws that are influenced by Islam, Christianity and traditional beliefs etc, recently the oba of Benin banned his subjects from wearing some traditional attires he claims were only to be worn by royal members of the Benin not ordinary Benin subjects |

Mrfeel: That's quite unfortunate. They enjoy all the benefits from alcohol production. |

Afrojuju2017:how the you mean sharia is not an official law in the North when the immediate past Chief judge 9f the Suppreme Court was drafted from the Sharia court of appeal? |
| Re: Alia Unveils New Benue Logo, Anthem Amid Criticism by Afrojuju2017(m): 3:32pm On Feb 11, 2025 |
sagitariusbaby:There is no Sharia law in its essence, however the constitution guarantee freedom of association and also recognises customary courts for the settlement of civil disputes such as inheritances, marriage etc . It is this some political operatives and religious zealots have used to mislead and abuse the rights of citizens by calling it sharia law. OBJ really didn't allow the then Zamfara governor to establish "sharia law" rather he couldn't have stopped the implementation of customary courts in a state, which uses the principles of sharia in civil arbitration. If an individual steals a chicken and the hands are cut off, or an individual is assaulted because of infidelity then their rights have been breached by whomever including the state and should be encouraged to seek redress in a court of law. The kings across Nigeria entertain disputes in their courts and deliver/suggest a decision according to the customs of the people, e.g. females are excluded from inheriting their fathers in sections of southern Nigeria because of customs thou some cases in court have undone some of this legacy in recent years, in the court of the Emirate of Kano there exist a sharia council to delibrate over civil cases too, how traditions allow for this however those powers of arbitration stop in civil matters and an individual who is not satisfied can still seek restitution in a magistrate or high court. The issue of dispute is most often land, marriage and inheritance The people saying there can't be sharia councils arbitrating in South west unfortunately don't understand the provisions of the constitution, while I'd rather not have duplicity of avenues for resolution of civic disputes as we already have traditional chiefs and kings I can't deny a group of people to settle marriage, divorce, inheritance, land disputes and informal agreements according to their recognised religious principles, the only solution is for all Christians like myself to surrender the authority of the church such as solemnisation of marriage to the state. |
