One year after, organisers of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon pay tribute to Wigwe

One year after his demise, organisers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon have paid tribute to the former Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, describing him as a motivator, excellent manager and pillar of road races in Nigeria.

Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba and son, Chizi, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in California, USA, last year. The news of his death broke when athletes and officials were still in celebration mood at the Eko Atlantic City finish point during the 2024 edition of the Lagos City Marathon.

Organisers of the Lagos City, Nilayo Sports Management, said that Wigwe played a key role by buying into the concept of the marathon 10 years ago. Former Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports, now Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, said:

“We will forever remain grateful to Wigwe for the legacy role he played in the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. I won’t forget his moral support and motivation for the athletes and all those involved in the organisation of the marathon. Without the excellent role Wigwe played in the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, I doubt I will be where I am today.

"We give God the glory that Wigwe left behind an amazing daughter, who is carrying on from where her father stopped. The 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will hold on February 15, and the organisers have designed a special package to celebrate Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba and son, Chizi.

"Through the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Wigwe played a vital role by contributing to youth empowerment, among others. His legacy will continue to challenge us to put in more efforts in ensuring the great job he started through the marathon race gets better”

It literally says (in the second and third posts) that Access Bank is sponsoring it and that they are going to pay tribute to Herbert Wigwe this year.

Herbert Wigwe was really a visionary. Top tier developed cities of the world usually have sporting events like this. It places them at the fore front which can inadvertently drive foreign investments of some sort.

Funny thing is that Nigerians never appreciate or win this competition, It's always our eastern African brothers or the whites..

Up next! Another smart visionary can key into Abuja or Calaber for Formula 1 or MotoGP.

I still remember vividly the theme of the first ever Lagos City Marathon (then it was MTN Half marathon). The theme was: "To Endure Is To Achieve". It was sponsored by MTN then. I wanted to participate. I registered but couldn't get the kits prior to the event at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The first Lagos city marathon was different from the MTN marathon. The first Lagos city marathon was held in 2015 by governor Ambode and it's entirely different from MTN half marathon, Lagos city Marathon is a full marathon, I have participated in all except the last two and I won't be participating in this because I have stopped running marathon for two years now

That's not the first ever Lagos Marathon. The Lagos Milo Marathon was held every year from c1984 till c1995. Abbas Mohammed (a soldier from Jos) and Yohanna Waziri were the regular champions.

Abbas Mohammed still holds the Nigerian record in the marathon (I believe he set it at the 1988 Olympics).

Last year I spent days trying to imagine why Herbert Wigwe and his Wife and son chose to be in US on the day Access Bank was having the yearly celebrated Marathon 'Run Lagos ' .

God knows best. Business is life, Business is religion to those that create Wealth. As we have 'god of Soccer in Football', it seems there is 'god of Business'. As God of soccer reacts, I think God of business can also react . This is just my imagination.
