On Monday, South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, and FNB Stadium manager Bertie Grobbelaar officially unveiled The Dome in Nasrec, the new 6 000-capacity venue next to the FNB Stadium in Soweto.

According to Grobbelaar, the opening of The Dome was not just the unveiling of a structure, but the realisation of a vision with valued partners, which will ensure Johannesburg cements its position as a premier sporting, business, artistic and tourism hub.

This dome is more than just a structure; it is a space that will serve our city and its people in multiple ways. The vision of it being a holding space on major game days will enhance the efficiency of our stadium management and the safety and comfort of fans. At the same time, it will provide a world-class venue for smaller concerts, exhibitions and cultural showcases, ensuring that our artists, performers and creative talents have a space in which to shine.

He added that the City of Johannesburg thrives on energy, innovation and expression, and The Dome represents a commitment to fostering that energy by attracting top-tier sports events, empowering local and international artists, and strengthening Johannesburg’s role as the heartbeat of South African culture and entertainment.

“As we open this remarkable venue, we look forward to the many memorable moments it will host, the dreams it will help fulfill, and the opportunities it will create for generations to come.”

At the launch, McKenzie promised to change the lives of upcoming promoters and South African artists.

"The lives of the creators in this country are not going to change in 2026, 2027, but they must change in 2025. Up-and-coming promoters are being kept away from venues because they are not on the databases. When they get to stadiums, they are told they cannot be used. We have made sure that doesn’t happen here, when you are here, even if you don’t have money, your minister has already made provision that you pay afterwards. The minister of happiness has made it happen, and this is only the beginning," he said.

He added that the opening of the venue is going to create job opportunities for many, and artists are going to be able to generate money.

Warrick Stock, known as DJ Warras, said the opening of this venue was going to benefit the music industry, as there is a shortage of venues.

“We need venues that can accommodate crowds above 5 000, that's number one, but also can accommodate for the weather because, when it rains, the event ends up being a flop. Promoters are losing money, making fewer people want to be in the industry and do events,” he said.

As in ehn! That maintenance culture always sadden me . Like , how do you spend so so mich on a project and won't find funds and time to maintain it? This makes me thing that our leaders work with "free" money. If it's a personal project, you will see how they will maintain it

That's excellent from SA.

Realizing SA have a population of 60+M and this is a very profitable economic venture for them. Nigeria, with a population of 230+M, will find it even more economically rewarding. I wish I had the funds to invest in similar venture here.
