President Bola Tinubu has approved hundreds of billions of naira for the expansion of 12 river basin projects across Nigeria in an effort to tackle hunger and strengthen food security.

The Director of Finance at Hadejia Jama’are River Basin, Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano on Saturday, said that President Tinubu’s commitment to northern development through agriculture is no longer a hidden agenda.

Kwankwaso explained that the approval for the expansion of the river basins would significantly boost food production and help combat hunger and starvation across the country.

He commended the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Alhaji Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, for ensuring that the budget for the revitalisation of the river basins was approved.

He added that the role played by the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee chairman in securing budget approval clearly demonstrates his alignment with President Tinubu’s vision and their shared commitment to reclaiming power in 2027.

Kwankwaso further stated that the revitalisation of the river basins would enhance irrigation farming and increase Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in food production.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership in also allocating 150 billion naira in the 2025 Appropriation Bill for the construction of a railway line in Kano City,” he said.

According to him, the project is expected to revolutionise transportation, enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and boost economic growth in the city.

The Director of Finance also noted that the railway line would improve the quality of life for Kano residents and position the city as a hub for commerce and industry.

“President Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated a clear focus on infrastructure development, as reflected in the 2025 budget’s emphasis on revitalising hospitals and investing in healthcare infrastructure.

“We acknowledge President Tinubu’s efforts to stimulate economic recovery and growth, as evident in the 2025 budget’s projections, including another allocation of billions of naira for the revitalisation of over 12 dams for irrigation farming,” he said.

He added that the revitalisation of irrigation farming would lead to the much-needed food security that would make Nigeria self-sufficient in food production.

Also speaking, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, said;

“President Tinubu is committed to ensuring that Nigeria can produce enough food to feed its growing population. Expanding these river basin projects will provide much-needed water resources for large-scale farming and irrigation,”

The 12 river basins slated for expansion include major agricultural hubs such as the Sokoto-Rima, Chad Basin, Hadejia-Jama’are, and Lower Benue river basins.

These projects are expected to benefit millions of farmers by providing a stable water supply for year-round cultivation, thereby increasing crop yields and ensuring food availability.

Farmers and agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the decision, stating that improved irrigation infrastructure will help reduce losses caused by erratic rainfall patterns. The President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kabir Ibrahim, praised the move, calling it a “step in the right direction” for food security.
