Obasanjo Mourns Clark, Laments Depletion Of Patriotic Leaders by iwaeda(op): 3:51pm On Feb 18, 2025
I received yet another shocking and saddening piece of news—the passing of a great brother and friend, Chief Edwin Clark. It was particularly distressing because we lost Chief Ayo Adebanjo, another prominent and illustrious Nigerian, only four days ago.

Indeed, the ranks of the nation’s patriotic leadership are rapidly dwindling with the loss of dedicated and resourceful figures who have served Nigeria in various capacities. This comes at a time when their wise counsel and vast experience are most needed.

“There is no denying that Chief Clark rendered outstanding service to the nation, serving as Commissioner for Education and Finance in the former Midwestern State from 1968 to 1974. His role as the official spokesperson of the Federal Government in 1975 also remains significant. I remember him as a close colleague in General Yakubu Gowon’s cabinet. As a Senator representing the Delta Senatorial Zone in 1983, he was at the forefront of the fight for minority rights.”

Speaking further, Obasanjo noted that the late Niger Delta leader was deeply committed to his people throughout his lifetime.

“Chief Clark was a tireless advocate for the oil-producing states of Nigeria. As a foremost leader not just of the Ijaw people but of the entire South-South region, he continuously urged his people to prioritise peace and stability.

“He distinguished himself as a peace-loving, humble, and devoted patriot. A staunch believer in democracy and participatory governance, he built an impressive reputation of goodwill and affection among his people, both as a frontline politician and a community leader.

“Despite his active involvement in the national discourse, he remained non-partisan in his views and was a truly detribalised Nigerian, with friends from all regions of the country. Even in his later years, Chief Clark continued to contribute to national development as a committed nationalist.

“In 2021, he volunteered to be part of the Committee for the Goodness of Nigeria (CGN), which I convened alongside His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar. The committee was established to address pressing national issues, including unity, security, peace, economic revitalisation, and the welfare of women and youth,” he stated.

Obasanjo added that Clark remained relentless in his contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development.

“For as long as I knew him, Chief Clark never wavered in his courage and commitment to progressive ideals. His contributions to national discourse were always marked by wisdom and integrity. There is no doubt that his passing has left a significant void — not just in his family and the Niger Delta region but across the nation — at a time when his experience, wisdom, and counsel were still invaluable.

“Nonetheless, we thank God that Chief Clark lived a long, impactful, and God-fearing life, dedicated to the service of Nigeria and its people. He left behind the virtues of hard work and transparency in public service, important lessons for both present and future generations.

“We should take solace in the fact that he lived a life worthy of emulation, touched the hearts of his community, and is mourned by all. We pray that the Good Lord grants his soul eternal rest and grants the Clark family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the former president concluded.

Just 3 days ago, I was talking with my Dad while browsing Nairaland and I saw the Pa Adebanjo transition thread; I told my Dad that Papa Adebanjo has died? He said yes, that the man died that morning in his home in Lekki.

We then spoke briefly about him and my dad said Pa Adebanjo’s age mates like Pa Edwin Clark the federal commissioner is still alive and has been quite for a while; we just said age is not on Pa Clark’s side.

That was all ooo; only for today I learnt Pa Edwin Clark has left too. I’m not surprised; a man is here today and tomorrow he is gone.

May we all live fruitful and purposeful lives and impact our neighbors positively, feed the hungry and deal your bread to the less privileged. May God help us all.

May God help this country. We are loosing patriots and the hawks and vultures are gathering.

Obasanjo, Clark is 96 years old!!
These are old men who have completed their life cycles

If you had let your children’s age mate ruled, you won’t be complaining of depletion of good leaders
Most of our patriots are now Old men and in the last stages of life. There are no new patriots. Those are his Lamentations

The youth cannot organise themselves without chaos. They lack good leaders in the political circle and those youths with leadership skills are ignored in the hype of unserious behaviour called cruise and overshadowed by dumb influencers.

OBJ still thinks he's relevant and his opinions matter (scoffs) nairaland sha..

The truth is, none of these old monkeys deserve respect from the youths because they're the sole cause of the serious mess/predicaments the common man is facing in this country sad! But something is fundamentally wrong with the typical Blackman and so called respect for elders. While typical Nigerians see elders through age, I for one see elders through impacts,/examples/foot steps..

If you are not insane, how do you expect me to respect so called elders who intentionally stole and drew the country back to stone age!? So you really expect me to respect/regard/honour the likes of Atiku, OBJ, BAT, Buhari, GEJ, all the 36 states governors (immediate past and present), all the senators/HOR members (past and present), now deceased Edwin Clark, Ogbonna Onu, Peter Obi (remove emotions/sentiments, Obi didn't perform above par as governor. I wanted him as President simply because he was the beat choice in the presidential race) and their likes, just because they're so called elders angry!?

One impressive thing about the Whites, you will never see an old white man misbehaving with the young just because he's older, he tries it, they (government) put him where he belongs..

I am not (never been) a Muslim, but my respect/regard and honour goes to former President sir Umaru Musa Yar'Adua of blessed memories. While others are busy playing the game of politics along tribal and religious lines, he demonstrated it in a positive light! Rest well sir, I miss you sir🙌..

My brother God bless u a million times for this honest and provoking post, we forget too easily, who put us where we are today.............
My brother, it is so annoying sad! I believe they're happy with the way the country is going right now with the common man thinking of what to eat each day. We can't even banter our fellow Africans anymore because of see finish. You argue with a Ghanaian and he quickly reminds you of how you don't have stable light in your country. You have it with a south African and he tells you about the japa syndrome and sorry state of the country. The Nigerian citizens are not helping matters as well, country is on fire yet you see them arguing over insignificant issues, tribal slurs; "Yorubas are better than the Igbos, Igbos are better than the Yorubas" coming from shameless adults. Whereas, ask them how old was Yakubu Gowon, Ojukwu, Buhari, IBB, Obafemi etc when they took control. Fulani herdsmen or indigenous serial killers would attack a community, you would see these same set of shameless adults arguing rubbish, gloating and counting scores tribally. Whether it happened in Ebonyi, Borno, Ondo or wherever, which one is right, justifiable or applaudable sad!? Now, I might not be in lack but seriously, shame dey catch me as our country be with the so called leaders/elders, alongside majority of the citizens f00ling themselves locally and internationally sad...

How are these people patriots? These are the same people who have led us into the difficult situation we find ourselves in today. This is long overdue because they are succeeding in producing their replicas to continue exploiting the land.
