Let us clear these critical questions.
1. Is the market mainly made of shops selling
drugs?
2. Which other goods are they selling in that market other than drugs?
3. If and only if there are other goods sold in that market, are those shops also accomplices in the sell of counterfeit drugs?
If they are the whole market need be close but if they are not, they have overstretched their authority. You need not punishing persons for the sin of others.
Re: Fake Drugs: Sanwo-Olu's Aide, Wale Ajetunmobi Criticises Peter Obi's Stance by John4B:
That sanwo olu aid is a fool. Did he read the news? Maybe he read but didn't understand. Obi didn't support production of counterfeit drugs. He only pleaded with the govt. to reopen the market as it's continous closure will affect many families whose their source of livelihood comes from there. He urged the govt to do proper investigation, arrest and prosecute those behind these crimes.

Are they not producing substandard drugs in lagos. Has the govt sealed or shot down the markets.

They nearly defraud my brother the other time at ladikpo market. He went to buy a car, RX 350, 2022 model to be precise. The car dealer, a Yoruba man wanted to sell RX 350, 2007 model to my brother in the name of 2022 and with price of 2022 model. If not for my timely intervention because my brother called me, I went with my mechanic. The fraudulent Yoruba guy installed the 2007 model with parts of of 2022 model. He changed everything the bumper, head lamp and all that. Mere looking at the car u can't differentiate the both. And there are problems associated with 2007 model like: dashboard cracking, oil leaks, steering problems, battery failures, rattling doors, illuminated airbag warning light, and many more.

These ppl will be forming saints while they are not.

I suspect the money raised is also used to fund proscripted terrorist organisations.

No wonder. Bikonu Soludo, do the needful or when Chinedu Gbadebo becomes governor in Anambra state in some years from now, he too will face the same issues.

You are all criminally insane in that your yeast to try and make a rational conclusion to such outright madness.

So Nigerians should continue to suffer the menace of fake , toxic and expired drugs because Ndi Anambra drug peddlers need to make ego?

God punish you for this rubbish.

When you get your useless dot Biafra , you can allow all manner of rubbish but until you are in Nigeria you will be made to follow the laws and regulations.

For how many weeks or months the market has been locked, just for a few days to conduct investigation, instead of Obi to first of all condemn the wickedness his people are perpetrating, the first thing that concern him is the money being lost not thousands if not millions of lives that are dying or have died because of the fake and substandard medicine being sold to innocent people in the country by his people.
I do hope some of you have comprehension problem and you guys need to quickly go and fix that before it is too late?
Go back and reread Obi words on the same subject matter. Obi advocated for the arrest, prosecution of those involved in the trading on fake drugs but expected that those involved should be isolated from those not involved.
Reasonably, why those not involved be punished because of the few, no reasonable democracy does that. This is a serious market where some people daily needs are met. Crack those involved down and leave those not involved to continue their normal life. This issue is never a rocket science. There's need to stop playing politics with critical issue.

Stop being naive with this stale narrative!
That can only happen in saner climes where there is an effective policing system and an unbiased judiciary!

Which citizen in Nigeria will expose a crime to the police knowing that the same enforcement agency will expose them to the criminals?

Is this not the same country where a criminal is arrested and later on,a call from a higher authority is made....48 hours later, that same criminal is released!

Oga,Civic responsibility can only be a possibility in Nigeria when the citizens start believing that the police will not expose them to criminals and when our judicial system is unbiased in handing out appropriate punishment to perpetrators of crime to serve as a deterrent to others!
Naive you say, nobody knows it all anyways, You lack comprehension

i said what i said cos i dont believe in whistle blowing,

lemme explain in kidagarten form, what is more effective is to set people up as there own watch dog, if chidi selling genuine drug knows Nafdac will not spare his shop if they find is neighbour chinedu selling fake drug he will do everything to displace chinedu

Every market as an association he will go there nd ensure they throw chinedu out

what i just said is just like community vigilante, there are times residents come out to do viligante by themselves at night .... if robbers wont let them rest it works beta than police

She is more than effective. Since your people don't want to desist from fake drug selling and others kept quite for the illicit act, then any time a shop or shops are found of fake drugs, I support total shutdown and proper investigation to be followed. Since you people don't value people's life, then you all will be withnessing the pains some of your brothers dish out to others. Obi will never smell vice president not much of president. He has been showing his true colours after election loss. Very foolish man.
Problem with most of you, you don't read, or decided to be unlearned. I am not Ibo, I am from Igbomina, Kwara. Very soon they will tag Obasa ibo. Ko leye yin I am from same state with Wale Ajetunmobi. angry grin angry

U are still being incredibly and stubbornly naive and it's so glaring!

You talk as if you are in a country where policing is effective and independent of any external influence!

Do you think those who supply these fake and counterfeit drugs don't have the indirect backing of authorities @ aso rock?
Why do you think that despite the efforts of agencies like nafdac, the supply of fake drugs keep increasing?

Do you think these same store owners do not have an associate that have setup several vigilantes to either reduce or wipe out fake drugs from that market or other markets where this heinous crimes are committed?

When you setup a vigilante and they arrest the said perpetrators of the fake drugs, won't the vigilante hand them over to the same corrupt policemen who would free them after a call from authorities above their paycheck?

The same policemen who released these criminals will be bribed to further reveal those who have exposed their fraudulent activities!

What you are advocating is no different from the SW security setup which is amotekun aka the regional vigilante!
However, the same security vigilante do not have the power to arrest or prosecute or even kill....hence, perpetrators are handed over to the same policemen!
Isn't that why despite the efforts of the south western security setup amotekun, criminality continues unabated?

The question you should be asking is how can our policing system be made independent and effective to curb criminality while the judiciary is strengthen to give a speedy judgement and sentencing to criminals who have been proclaimed guilty?

Seems one of us is talking at a level above the other IQ grade

Yeah ! these criminals have connection and might even have support in white house

But what is product/goods without market ... read it till it sinks.

like i said product without market... if Nafdac can operate in a way that turns genuine sellers against fake sellers these will yield better result in no time

Back 2 my narrative for the last time, if we selling genuine drugs in ikeja knows Nafdac will come after fake sellers in our market will get our shops locked up .. we will be on alert and make sure our market doesn't become a haven for fake sellers .... community policing works better
Handing them over to the police is not the goal cheesy ... ousting criminals from the market is the big goal, sellers know themselves so they can easily frustrate bad eggs out

You see make i mention police please no mention police again

This is an epistle of ignorance!

Your solution can only be admissible in an environment where the security is effective and independent.... anything other than that is an exercise is futility!

Even those who claim to be genuine suppliers can be compromised hence there is a need for police enforcement to remind them about the grave consequences of breaking the law!

If handing them to the police is not the goal so how do you intend to arrest, prosecute and jail defaulters to serve as a deterrent to others?

How can you institute community policing without the permission of the law enforcement agencies like the police or the modification of the present centralized system of policing as contained in the 1999 constitution?

Unless you are advocating that the vigilante setup by the traders will start performing the functions or duties of the police which is clearly unorthodox and another case of ignorance on your part!

Try to understand or make inquires of how your constitution and present system of security functions before engaging in an issue you know little of!

Like I said before, you are clearly naive!

arrest, prosecute and jail term as being the modus operandi as far as decades ... yet as it deter cime or stop people from venturing into crime

You are the one positing police are not effective, they are corrupt and easily free criminals ... which necessitate we must "thinking outside the box"

For a second can you delete the police in your head, and stop going off point

i have proffered my own solution, you can go on ranting 1 million reasons why nothing can work, well thats the mentality of average Nigerians. ciao

No matter the 'thinking outside the box',the police will still be needed as an the enforcement agency saddled with the responsibility of curbing criminalities like fake drug merchants!
Instead of concocting quick fixes, that haven't solved anything,to bypass the police, the question that should be asked is how can the policing system become efficient, effective and independent to perform its statutory duties as a law enforcement agency?
looking for quick fixes or shortcuts will still bring us back to the same position!
A solution with no system in place to punish perpetrators will only lead to impunity!
The police must be fixed to handle such matters properly!
Thats my position!

chidiokay:

Your solution though well intended is borne out of ignorance and naivety!
When an enforcement agency isn't functioning as constituted, the most sensible thing to do is to make it work by modifying its system of operation to make it transparent, independent and effective not through shortcuts as you are erroneously and hilariously positing!
The rest of your gibberish are at best comical but irrelevant!

I thought you are the intelligent one, when it comes to fake drugs Police are not the enforcement agency, thats the job of Nafdac to go after them police are 3rd party needed to effect arrest

Modifying the police, really ?? thats your best shot 🤣🤣🤣 you know one of the problem humams have is disability not to think outside the box, esp. Nigerians,

NAFDAC is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water.
Their job is not to arrest because they don't have the powers to do so according to the 2015 act...they collaborate with the enforcement agency in the country which is the police to make arrests and prosecute offenders!
Enforcement agency is defined as a public organization responsible for maintaining law and order, investigating crimes, and prosecuting offenders with the assistance of prosecutors.
That's why NAFDAC officers go with the police to the field!

When you are a novice or limited to an issue beyond your apparent scope of understanding, you ask relevant questions to gain more knowledge!
The current system of policing can be MODIFIED THROUGH A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT by removing it from the exclusive to concurrent list with the sole aim of unbundling or decentralizing civil security structure in the nation by creating state and community policing with further modifications on their independence to ensure effectiveness in their discharge of duties!
This will eliminate interference from outsiders and ensure criminals like fake drug suppliers do not only get arrested but will justice for their crimes which will ultimately serve a deterrent to other and wipe out impunity!
There is no shame in making inquiries esp with your obviously limited knowledge in the current setup of policing in Nigeria!

Hmmmm.....'Humams' indeed!

Making Police the subject matter here is just ridiculous, Fight against fake drugs and drink is a fight for Nafdac, they are the agencies with sole authority to act as check and balances on consumables in circulation.

I wont let you decoy me into the Police whatever nonsense, if you like re write the whole constitution at the end naa naija persons you go recruit, have we not tried police reforms and even changed their uniform to sky blue, howfar

I hve faced more than enough from all the SE businesses I had dealings with. From Alaba international, to Ports and land Border to even Abakaliki. Even when I was a tenant. I notice that much when I was serving in Anambra State, at main market , I saw how paracetamol was being produced inside a shop then in years 2000.
They call it hustling, but it's pure fraudulent activities. It's just too much. The worse is that they have now influence other people doing the right thing but that want to catch-up with them in same business.

You spew lots of nonsense with so much confidence!

If nafdac could arrest or prosecute, then why do they need the police?
Can nafdac maintain law and order or do they have a prison to apprehend defaulters or criminals?

So you are hoping this present system of police will apprehend fake drugs suppliers and prosecute them?😆😆

You are equally as guilty as the government that you are trying to condemn with your horrendous shortcut approach!

Until the policing system is decentralized and structured into an independent form to attain effectiveness and efficiency,no matter how many fake drugs suppliers caught, they will still get released and look for other ways to bypass nafdac and other regulatory agencies in the future!

I don't expect you to comprehend the importance of policing and the immediate need to make it work effectively with your flawed and conditioned belief that as long as you have a hammer, every problem becomes a nail!

Finally, arguing with you wasn't really a waste of time....on the contrary,it was entertaining to note that not everyone on nairaland is as knowledgeable as they seem and you are quite frankly are one of them!

That you lack the cells and ability to improvise does not mean i dont know what i am proposing,

We have been having these forth and back for ... yet all you spew are orthodox measures even criminals are well informed

Police reform is dependant on a lot of factors, process and too many things involve, for how long have we being on tax reform .. it is that complicated.

Going to school gives you knowledge to improvise, but i understand a typical Nigerian cant reason beyond copying conventional theories thats why Govt and Cbn are failing across board.

Zsombie brain. Same folks voted abd still supporting a president who had a drug case in the US.
Since Customs and NAFDAC guys are stationed at the ports… can they shut down all the ports in Naija. Lagos ports account for 90% of fake drugs coming into Naija.

How is police reform suppose to curb Fake/counterfeit market when the agency spare heading the war Nafdac ... dont you think before you type at all.

What is Policing structure without the community support

what will Policing structure achieve without active intels from the community

Next time when the innocent ones among them see anything out of ordinary, they will quickly call the cops.

Majority of the traders there know fake drugs are traded in the market. As usual they will blame everyone except themselves
Exactly!

What is Policing structure without the community support

what will Policing structure achieve without active intels from the community

what can Policing structure achieve with less than 400k police recruit monitoring a 200million population.

So now you want to indirectly make inquires after making a complete nuisance of urself through your ignorance and naivety while hilariously spewing another epistle 😂😂

What I can perceive from your 'tales by moonlight' rants is someone who wants to learn but pride is blocking his pathway😎

For the benefit of others who might become future officer holders,Let me give a rebuttal to some(if not all) of your indirect inquires!

First question....Good boy!
Now listen if U want😆
Police reforms primarily achieves an independent police system whose sole aim is to carry out their duties without fear or respect for status of public holders or the high and mighty in the society!
In local parlance,'everybody go collect'😃
How does it influence or curb fake drugs suppliers? The independence of the police will ensure that influencial players in the market spearheading the supplies are investigated, and arrested for prosecution, instead of the present porous system where an average policeman can be bribed or where a call from a higher authority is needed to release a criminal from custody!
Once one or two members of the cartel are arrested, prosecuted and jailed, this will send shockwaves to the fake drugs cartel and serve as a deterrent to others that a new sheriff is in town😆😆

What is policing structure without community support?
Good question!
Currently, nobody will be stupid enough to give out information about a criminal activity taking place anywhere knowing fully well that the current police will release a criminal in custody after 48 hours or less and as an extra bonus, reveal the individual that reported them! U know the rest!
However, with a decentralized and independent system of policing, the community will be enlightened about a new and reformed policing system that will now be closer to them aka 'police is ur friend' and where they are encouraged to inform police about any criminality knowing fully well that their identify will surely be protected while the criminal will be made to face justice!

what can Policing structure achieve with less than 400k police recruit monitoring a 200million population?
The number of policemen and women will be determined by the number of citizens in that state to conform with international best practices where UN recommends a ratio of one police officer for every 220 people.

This will be made possible through a reformed, independent and decentralized policing structure creating state and local government police where individuals will have a standard entry requirement of a University degree before being recruited and will be adequately trained on civil policing!

is it written on stone, long method/process guarantees efficiency or effectiveness
Prevention aka shortcut will only reduce criminality by 10% but a well intended policing system will ensure a stiffer punishment which will reduce criminality by 80%
Any crime solved with a short term measure or mindset will only lead to more pathways to criminality!
Solving crime long term is the best option!

There is no correlation between the issue at hand with that of ATMs and banks unless you are delving into the impact of ICT in policing for better surveillance!
The banking sector also made reforms to arrive at this point!
However, with all the banking sector reforms including the incorporation of ICT,criminality has now taken a new dimension which is evident with the unexplained withdrawal of funds from an account holder by a criminal with an average knowledge of hacking!

Try as much as you can, even with the innovation of ICT,if there is no reforms to achieve a decentralized and independent policing structure, that same ICT will be used to foster more criminality just like the current banking sector today!

Fake drugs: NAFDAC reopens Onitsha drug market
•Bans ex-market leaders, others
By GEOFFREY ANYANWU, Awka
Tuesday, June 26, 2007
•Prof. Dora Akunyili

Traders at the Onitsha Bridge Head Market (Onitsha drug market), who were out of business for four months following the closure by National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), could not hold their joy on Monday as the agency re-opened the market conditionally.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Dora Akunyili, had hardly finished announcing the re-opening of the market, when the traders jumped and shouted at the top of their voices for joy, singing praises of Governor Peter Obi who made it possible.

Onitsha Bridge Head Market was closed on March 6, 2007 over fake and counterfeit drugs. After screening of the market, NAFDAC removed and publicly destroyed 104 truckloads of fake, counterfeit, expired, banned and smuggled drugs worth over N6.5 billion from the market.

The re-opening of the market, Akunyili said became necessary following the commitment of the state governor, Mr. Obi, who she said had, on getting the Supreme Court judgment that reinstated him, called her and pleaded to fulfill every condition that would get the market reopened.
She said: "Your governor, Mr. Peter Obi, a man of his words, has guaranteed that he will ensure that all the conditions are met. This has given us the incentive to reopen the market. Another major reason we are reopening the market is that we are mindful of the suffering of the few genuine traders who have been caught up in the mess caused by criminals in their midst".

The NAFDAC bos, however, gave the agency’s immediate and long terms conditions for the reopening of the market, which include the setting up of an eight-man caretaker committee made up of credible people to oversee the affairs of the market for one year before an election would be held; and a letter of undertaking to be signed by them.

NAFDAC also demanded a commitment by the new caretaker committee to hand over to it the eight members of the board of trustees and eradication committee or former officials of the market union, OPPMDU, who either refused to honour its invitation or absconded half-way during interrogation.

She further said: "Following our interviews, interrogations and other findings, which seriously indicted some people, NAFDAC outright bans the following categories of people from owning any shop or operating inside the Bridge Head Drug Market: all erstwhile members of Alphonsus Onyejiaku-led board of trustees (excluding William Anyaoha) of OPPMDU, all erstwhile members of the Josephat Eli-led eradication committee of OPPMDU, all members of OPPMDU who have held the office of chairman/president or Secretary of OPPMDU since 2002."

Also, Akunyili announced 26 names who she described as kingpins of faking and counterfeiting and owners of shops that are generally responsible for the monumental mess in the market, who she said were also banned from operating in the market, adding: "They are given 48 hours to remove all their belongings from the shops, and thereafter never to transact any business in the drug market again".
On the long term, she said that the market should be walled to provide for only three entrances or outlets for both vehicular and pedestrian movements.

The agency, she further said, demanded the complete redesigning or restraining of the shops, including the possible collapsing of many shops into one to ventilate and make them suitable for the storage of drugs; adding that ultimate solution was for the state to map out a virgin land and build a modern drug mart that would be registered by PCN, supervised by pharmacists and monitored by NAFDAC.
She therefore, directed all the traders to enter their stalls and bring out all expired drugs and voluntarily and immediately hand them over to NAFDAC officials, noting that if any expired drug is found in any shop afterward the owner would be sanctioned.

Also addressing the traders, Governor Obi, who earlier held about three hours closed-door meeting with Akunyili in his office, said he had since resuming duties been on the neck of NAFDAC for the reopening of the market. He thanked the agency for believing in him, promising not to let it down.
He, however, warned that the state government would not hesitate to pull down any market in the state where fake drugs are found and revoke the document of land on which the market is built.

Obi promised to see to the building of the modern drug market, just as he promised to inaugurate the caretaker committee.
One of the traders, Mr. Obi Nwosu, commended the governor for intervening in the matter and getting NAFDAC to reopen the market, noting that the traders suffered a great deal in the four months they were out of business.
He also urged the new caretaker committee to ensure that NAFDAC directives were carried to the letter, so that business in the place would run without hitches.
Bumping this post for those who keep engaging in politics and mischief. And to those who can only see things through tribe. Look at the people on this thread young people, by now, if they were 18 in 2007, they are now 36. Don't waste your life on the internet with hate. It never ends.

Sanwoolu's aide mischievously leaves out the reason Obi wanted the market open in 2007
