Improve security and concurrently open up estate's roads. Build walkways all over the state, and add additional lanes for Marwa in link roads. It will cost money and compensation for right of way properties though. Secondly, plan towards an inter state development with Ogun state in which the latter state provides land for estate developers so people who want privacy can move to the state and towards a joint contribution for three major inter-state roads, Sango axis, Berger axis and Agbara axis. |

1. Rehabilitate all roads needing attention and construct proper drainage and channels. 2. Ban all form of street trading/hawking and the likes 3. Hack down all illegal buildings/shops built on the right-of -way(ROW) and construct walkways on either sides of the roads 4. Reduce the number of bus stops on major roads where necessary 5. Introduce lay-byes on major bus stops 6. Strictly monitor the activities of commercial bus operators(yellow buses) 7. Launch more BRT buses - Introduce more BRT service routes - Create special BRT corridors on all routes i.e Ikorodu road - Forge out friendly commuter schemes/incentives/plans for the sole aim of making the buses preferable other than private vehicles 8. Ferry services presently requires serious attention 9. Public enlightenment. 10. In-depth training of transport/traffic personnel Front page please! 10. 7 Likes |

They should model the traffic and its management after simple computer network traffic by -Giving higher priority to road most frequented. -Employing equivalent of a system administrator(a traffic warder) to bring on-demand judgement on who goes first whenever there is traffic jam. -Be ready to sacrifice building structures for roads in high traffic areas. -Deploy smaller vehicle for route where movement pattern aren't always high. -If possible, employ remote monitoring of traffic patters (remote system administrators or traffic warders) through satellite monitoring system. -Creation of car parks for residential areas and commercial areas alike. |

Interesting solutions. First, no one knows exactly how many bodies reside in Lagos, where they are most concentrated, and the extent of resources needed to support them. Overpopulation in Lagos is a problem in itself. - without knowing the number of people to cater for, you can't provide the neccessary infrastructure. 2. There is no sense of communal transportation. It appears everyone wants to drive. In places like the U.S. the Mayor, and a significant number of the wealthy use communal transportation I.e. the trains - a huge problem is that you cannot only create transportation alternatives for the "working poor" or "low income" - what's good for the goose is also good for the gander. For a lasting solution, we must be able to implement a culture of communal transportation. |

You seems to have hit all the points, most especially the state of roads and curtailling the numbers of busstops. How about the idea of having overhead cable travel cars from places like iddo to island.Mile to festac and all the strategic short routes that are synonymous with chronic traffic build ups? |

redsun: You seems to have hit all the points, most especially the state of roads and curtailling the numbers of busstops. Could you talk more about the overhead cable? How does it work? Does it operate without electricity? |

AT LEAST 5000 BRT BUSES NOT 300. TRAINS. TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT NOT EXTORTION. 1 Like |

mikolo80: AT LEAST 5000 BRT BUSES NOT 300. TRAINS. TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT NOT EXTORTION. You are suggesting that there should be an oversupply of buses - how would distribution work as per particular geographic location? Who gets what, more condensed areas? |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by Desola(f): 1:31pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
More BRT buses More BRT routes Lagos Bikes where commuters can rent bicycles (or their own personal bikes) and ride into congestion charging zones without incurring further charges or penalties. Allow bicycle riders to use BRT lanes as well as Lagos state registered taxis. More railway lines which are effective and fit for purpose. These are initiatives that have been tried and tested in other climes and ones which have been successful. London is an ancient city with far narrower roads. They didn't have to alter the plan of the city or expand many roads and yet, they are successfully running these efficiently. 1 Like |

Desola, the reason why I think this hasn't worked in Lagos is because there is no culture of communal transportation. See my post above - |

Our roads should be widened just like it is in Abuja. |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by redsun(m): 2:03pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
obowunmi: Unfortunately there might be some point where electricity might be required to operate an engine that pulls the cable through a system of pulley along the routes. Primarily, cable cars are vehicles with no motors but to keep the cable running continiously,it could require some kind of battery, electricity or otherwise. It could cost way less than over head trains to develop, set up and manage. And most of all,it is envoronmentally very friendly |

Lagos' immediate transport problem is roads, there simply needs to be more roads for the ever increasing number of vehicles. All ideas for solutions are just impractical if we don't get more/expanded trunk routes between major city areas. |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by yuzedo: 2:06pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
Make peepo begin ride horse go work... No more car! On a serious note: 1. Create a tram-like service or mono-rail to run from Mainland to Island 2. Introduce a strategy to limit the number of cars plying the road on certain days or at certain times i.e. Odd/Even number cars for different days of the week 3. Get rid of those damn yellow buses! Replace them with coaster buses or something. 4. Improve the gaddem road network and fix the bad roads for alternate navigation (Essential) 5. Make overhead roads especially for the BRTs.. Any vehicle that isn't a BRT should be pushed down immediately it climbs the overhead road. |

Carpooling. . .that's what cities like LA and Houston with their crazy traffic do . . . On second thoughts, maybe this is not the solution for Nigerians. The Average Naija man is untrusting and superstitious with a strong ability to read meaning into anything. If he isn't thinking Papa Boniface might use him for ritual if he enters his car, he is thinking Baba Boniface just wants to show off, rub it in his face that he has the better car. Guess being stuck in 4hrs traffic it is then. |

1) More segregated BRT Lanes (Lekki Expressway, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, etc). 2) Completion of the 7 rail lines that Lamata has proposed (see map and details below). 3) Standard ferry ports @ Langbasa, Badore, Ikorodu, Lekki, Maroko, Queensdrive, Bonny Camp, Mile 2, Isolo, Oworonshoki, Ebutte-Metta, Iddo, etc and ferry services to these ports. 4) Completion of the 4th Mainland Bridge (which should also include a rail line). 5) Cycle lanes 6) A means of compelling people to leave their cars at home and use public transport (this would probably cause another uproar, but it's definitely needed). 7) Improve the NRC: 1987-1989 Babangida launched the Federal Urban Mass Transit Programme. One of the goals was to make it possible for Nigerians to live in Ibadan and commute to Lagos by train within one hour (the president even took a train ride to Ibadan while launching the programme). 2 Likes |

Boat transportation enlightenment Build more bridges rather than roundabouts. Ajah roundabout to Ado road needs a bridge instead instead. Create industrial zones in every local government through entrepreneurial incentives like tax breaks Maintain adequate records of population in fact effective statistics and maximum capacity for cities. Each estate needs a maximum number of occupants and based on that access/exits would be developed. Design better bus stops Design better bus parks Ban seriously, very seriously sirens and escort idiots Build heliports Car pool discounts at the toll gate |

The trafic arising from cms to costain is always a hectic one when workers are coming back from work due to the X junction that exist between the road and that of oyingbo heading to orile, in order for this trafic mess to stop i think the link leading to orile should be blocked so that everybody coming from either cms or oyingbo will have to follow that straight road going to stadium, the vehicles from oyingbo can then take a U-turn at ikponri and head there way back to orile, i believe if this is done good result can be very much archieved. |

The more solutions people come up with, the more cars people will buy. It's the nigerian mentality- everyone wants to own and drive a car even if they have to sleep and wake up in it before they get where they are going |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by Kx: 2:27pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
Enact govt policies that will encourage private ownerships of buses. Those busess could be registered with the state -cheaply- for ease of identity, security and reference. That way majority of the peeps that drives to and fro work daily, thereby over crowding the roads, could join the buses while leaving their cars at home. |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by jaybee3(m): 2:31pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
Lagos state government probably need to start providing incentives to companies that move their main offices out of the districts with the most congestion. Doing these will not only help redistribute the flow of traffic, it will also help regenerate some of the less developed locations in the state. Nigerians don't embrace change so any serious Government will look beyond the norm |

less cars more commercial vehicles, im not saying commercial vehicles will bring a permanent solution to it but it will help and cabs in residential areas and more footpaths but there will never be a permanent solution im not being negative but real because without people no congestion and the population is growing everyday. fashola knows the solution to the congestion and the new traffic law is part of it. nigerians should walk more why drive if you are only going 2 miles away its not like its cold. waterways and ferry, i remember i everytime i need to go to apapa from cms i always use the ferry and its so quick and economical and obey traffic laws |
