Truth is they're few tech jobs out there, but the hype was much and alot of people like you blindly learnt tech skills, now applicants are more than the actual available tech jobs, goto remote work websites and see the thousands of people applying to one tech job, all over the world, it's crazy, now most tech jobs also exclude Africa, they reserve it for Europe and north America, the few available worldwide are crowded by hungry people especially Indians, they're practically everywhere like a pandemic, forget the dreams abeg, na only crypto and surveys be the sure thing now, atleast nobody go control wether I earn or not, it's all up to me, and before you rant, I was like you, I learnt UI and UX design, web design, and graphics design yet here I am, if no be survey and crypto my own for don finish.
Surveys?

Do surveys make you real money?

I have only seen them pay pennies.

You lied.

Tech job is almost entirely on merit

You want to recruit a mediocre who will expose your entire data via incompetence ?

If you are worth your salt, there are plenty jobs out there. I laugh when people talk about AI when they do not even understand how it works . AI is a platform that could be leveraged on.
Honestly, a lot of people still don't understand the concept of AI, they believe AI will just viam replace everyone that has been working on a project for a company, grin grin , what if there's no proper documentation of code, where AI wan start to dissect the project from? or it will just pick the code base and start spinning nonsense grin grin, will it be intelligent enough to know when to merge codes to push for deployment, when an issue occurs after deployment how does it roll back, then make changes before pushing again, so many questions are hanging around AI that people don't know,

The noise about tech got into my head and I quit my 8-5 job. Though the 8-5 job was becoming stressful and toxic, I couldn't cope and had to leave.

I had saved some funds and learned data analytics. Now here is where the issue lies.

I've applied to more than a thousand jobs and I keep getting rejections.

My hope was to get a remote job but I'm not seeing it coming.

Is tech all about noise or it's just saturated?

While learning , we were told a data analyst earns 30k USD annually. I'm just getting tired and frustrated
Na wa o. Please don't give up.

Baba leave cappings and packaging. Humble yourself learn MS- word like pro. Mount campus gate with your Lapi and small gen. You go cash out. In essence what I'm saying is, the tech jobs we see advertised online don't match the needs of a common Nigerian. Of what use is getting good at something with no local demand?

Any profession that's advertised as lucrative will attract many people. The competition gets hot. The primary beneficiaries are the certificate mills that suck more students in for the programmes.

Obviously you do not understand tech.

You have not worked with tech at an enterprise level.

You are still thinking of using code to develop a calculator solution. It is more and deep than that. So you expect a company like first bank to subject their code to chat gpt. Chat gpt simply make life a bit easier but most codes being churned out require refactoring and understanding of design principles and patterns.

The first step to failing in tech is to go into it for the financials alone. It’s a sure way to failure.

Companies in the US and Europe still recruit the best hands . There’s something lacking in your skill set if you are not getting interviewed.

Tech is an art and you need to learn the fundamentals. I get enough invites all over the world with relocation package that I even choose to ignore
chatgpt.com now could do a lot than you imagine. You have to subscribe to get the best of it.

I was surprised to develope a plugin that could do a task efficiently. Previously i used to hire developers to help me on that.now this Ai doed better and even check for vulnerability. Although u need to know the basics for you to structure things around

Number one mistake you made is resigning. The best time to look for a job is when you are employed. The chances of getting a new one are higher as an employed person than unemployed.

- The tech industry has witnessed massive layoffs within the last two years and still witnesses retrenchment upon sackings. So, you are competing for limited positions with much more experienced folks who companies are willing to pay less for their wealth of experience than a tyro they have to train.

- As a newbie who wants to change industries and career paths, you don't start with remote roles. Rather, you begin with on-site roles which offer you access to seniors who will guide you through the journey. Also, nothing beats face-to-face interactions, especially during your nascent years.

- Thousands of job applications? How is your CV like? Are they specific to the position advertised abi na anywhere belly face? Which platforms do you utilise the most?

Lastly, data science abi data analyst roles are so cheap and the actual data science jobs require a PhD or MSc with intersnhips. So, it is funny people enrol in three month courses and expect to land plum data science or AI roles. Whereas these fields require folks with advanced degrees in quant heavy fields such as mathematics and physics. Are you sure entry level data analyst remote workers in Nigeria earn $30K per annum? shocked grin

if those wicked tech educators dont tell them they will make $30k entry level salary in Nigeria, how will they sell courses to them.
Someone needs to start telling people the truth, tech is not a shortcut to success, it takes dedication, hardwork, serious work, frustrations, grit, perseverance and consistency over a long period of time.

I think if anyone should be going into tech from now don't do it to get or hoping to get a job. Instead use it to become an entrepreneur, there have been layoffs in this field, sometimes this year Meta layed off people as well. Guess the more technology or AI advances the less humans will be needed and these companies are all moving jobs they can move abroad to India.

Maybe with data analysis skill one can build data website or platform that shows consumer behavior in young adults or Sports Statistics like those shown in matches.

We should also learn not to fall for hype, there will always be need for Electricians, Doctors, Lawyers, Cooks, Security, Pilots, Tailor etc

Some things hyped as excellent opportunities in the media today are just ways to take money off you.

Great piece, Mr. MT.

I think finance is the main motivation behind most people presently venturing, or wanting to venture into tech. Reason why we keep hearing about the desire of most, to "make it big" in the tech industry.

Not necessarily because they have the innate desire, requisite skills & relevant experience to solve problems & create value in the field, but because they are looking for a big break financially. Given the current state of things, I can't really blame them much.

I've got some questions I'd like to ask you, regarding tech within our current clime. Is there a way I can reach out to you privately, please? Perhaps on WhatsApp?

Same shits happens to Laptops in the wrong so called computer repairers.. all they can think off . .. is format... Format and re formating a device...
very true. The fact generally is that there lot's of pirated softwares in the open market where computer village guys bypass original softwares or download fake softwares and their crackers or activation keys.Because of fraudulent act top computer giants like HP,Dell,Acer,Lenovo even microsoft no longer package oem OS and apps CD Plates with their brands rather they have them pre-installed in the systems before shipping.
But overseas the original OS, apps, drivers for hardwares are readily available for downloads from their respective sites.People over there know what piracy laws are so they are very careful not to breach them

In most cases they don't even think of backing up personal files and likes.they rush to format the hdd or sdd.they may not be able to find all the complete drivers the system came with even if they search online.

sure because the way that field is revolutionizing is unprecedented.

To stay abrace with evolving state of the art technologies is big case.Every day new features keep popping up.

In tech field one is learning about the part you feel is trending another one or more are already out.e.g unman drones, robotics and AI in virtually all field of human
endeavor.
Research is on going about more sophisticated technology.
pretty soon they will be unveil

Again, obviously you are not an enterprise developer.

I laugh at most of the comments on this thread.

Even in many Nigeria banks, there are roles for tech guys, especially developers, with monthly net salary of 1.5 million and above as a senior dev. Banks are struggling to fill these roles.

Most people here don’t know the processes and stages of software from architecture to deployment and continuous improvement,

I see a lot of people focusing on the mastery of a particular programming language instead of focusing on how to deliver highly performant, highly scalable , highly available software.

Then most people here do not understand how to leverage on ML to deliver solution. ML is just a subset of AI. AI comprises of so many things and you only need to focus on an aspect which will help you.

There lies the difference between a rookie and an expert.

Not all tech jobs in Nigeria is based on recommendation,

All jucy jobs are on recommendation
In short any employment opportunity in Nigeria is based on recommendation.

Even teaching , security nannyjob

Nigeria is not a country to seek employment without proper networking.

But the truth is,

Almost all tech jobs can be automated now with AI,
The speed with which it's application is increasing begs the question will there be jobs in the nearest future?

I WAS emphasis on was a graphic designer and web developer looking for paid gigs online,
Until I downloaded ChatGPT then realized my skill will become obsolete soon from what chat got could do as at the time,

Today AI is making videos, paintings, websites even cloning and maintenance,

Now who will pay for something that can be done almost free with AI
AI is not replacing anyone (at least for now). It's only making work better. I am an AI Engineer.

This is the Koko of the matter.

You need connection and recommendations to get a good tech job.

Does Nigeria really have a viable tech sector, or is it just people in tech-inscribed T-shirts with laptops hopping from one remote work hub to the next? I mean, our tech industry is basically a glorified game of "brilliant minds" with Wi-Fi.

When we're actually ready for a real tech industry, we'll be calling on the government to build a proper industrialised environment for real tech companies - think mobile phone manufacturers, satellite companies, robot factories - basically, places with actual addresses, not just free Wi-Fi and coffee.

How can we talk about a tech industry when we still import ordinary POS machines? What is you people's idea of tech? Free WiFi, website design, coding, and crypto? Walai, we are not ready.

As always, we always want to jump the process. How can we talk about modern day tech without proper industrialisation? After learning to code, what next? Look around you, apart from banks, who your coding help? Schools still struggling to pay minimum wage or market women??

I absolutely agree with you. Nigerians glorify nonsense. A country that produce nothing is hyping herself in tech.

You can't create TV, smartphone, solar accessories, machinery, security devices, household electronics etc, just only code, code, code and you think you are into tech.
Let's continue to mumu ourselves

I intend to do software engineering program. Basically I just want to have a good skill. I dropped from school few years ago, I was studying mechanical engineering at Uniuyo, but things became tougher after I lost my dad so I dropped. I just want to be skilled in something. Also, I just love problem solving and logic

See save yourself the cost invest that money in something else. You can learn these skills on your own without paying anyone a dime. I learnt everything I know on my own without paying a single kobo. All you need is discipline to go at it every single day. No matter the set back you keep plugging away at it every day. If you pay these people sure they will give you some sort of structure and knowledge but in the end you will still need to go back and actually learn and understand these things yourself.

Software engineering is not for the week its better you get into it on your own without paying anyone should in case you later realise its not for you. And yeah jobs are not at a premium currently, so I won't advise you spend that amount of money on learning something that you will struggle to get job from after. Instead have a plan A and plan B don't put all your eggs in one basket. Invest that money in a plan B while you sit your ass down and grind out this path as a plan A.

Apply for remote intern data analyst roles with reputable international companies first. Companies like Cisco, PWC, IBM, Google. When you have one or two international firms in your CV even as an intern, it will help you land international jobs. It's only those big names companies in most cases that really go extra mile to recruit internationally. Every other thing said about getting IT jobs from Nigeria easily is a lie. Even the govt agencies in Nigeria that employ most of us computer science graduates - don't know what to do with us because they are stuck In the 1970 ideology of civil service. Our ideas are often not accepted. So until we are able to travel out, we remain underpaid and our ideas of futuristic advancements and contributions are not welcome
