Illegal Dissolution Of LG Council A Treasonable Offence – AGF by Maxymilliano(op): 1:39pm On Feb 19, 2025

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has described the illegal dissolution and taking over of local government administration by state governors as a treasonable offence.

Fagbemi stated this on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of an event organised by the Nigeria Bar Association in Abuja.

Represented by the Director of Civil Appeals in the ministry, Tijani Gazali, the AGF noted that despite the judgment of the Supreme Court and the provision of the constitution guarding against the interference of state governors in the running of local government councils, some governors and their state assemblies continue dissolving elected local government council without following the provisions of the constitution.

He also accused the Attorney General and Commissioners for Justice at the state level for not giving legal advice to their governors and called for a stiff penalty against any governor who continues in such an illegal act.

I like this. The LG administration must work. There should be a mechanism for tracking what LG chairpersons are doing with their allocations and they must live within their domains.

You cannot be an LGA chairman and live in state capital. If you don't like the law, don't contest for the position.

LGA chairman living outside his LGA is like Hope Uzodinma governing Imo State from Abuja.

The elephants in the room are the governors who want to chop the LG funds. Most people call on the Presidents but let's face it, governance starts at your local area and that is your LGA. Why are you more interested in who's president than who's your councilor huh

Deterrent to bad behavior is a must. It seems people who dislike him stating this fact have never enforced rules. Laws are just opions with a gun behind them. If you're not willing to shoot you're rules can't be disregarded. What do you regard overthrowing a duly elected government?

Simply punish the policemen and anybody working under the governor. This sort of case is conspiracy. Once you have a few guys at the bottom jammed up they will happily sell out the governor know state pardons won't help them with federal charges.

True.

However, the immunity clause in the Constitution needs to be amended so that Governors can at least be prosecuted for treasonable felony while they are in office.

Without such amendment, Governors will continue to ignore or scheme around Supreme Court judgements.

If Governors or any President can ignore Supreme Court rulings and we accept and normalise it, then we have walked ourselves into a lawless, ungovernable situation.

We hear this over and over again and its seems there is no way to stop it.

Until the courts commit these criminal governors to jails we will keep going round in circles over this issue.

Only the judiciary can help us of this madness. Its not enough to declear the dissolution of Local government council illegal but to commit to jail
