Basically, Babangida was trying to get rid of Abacha, but he knew that it would be difficult. A series of events (including the Orkar Coup) made it impossible to remove Abacha.

However, Babangida knew that Abacha was loyal.

In the run up to the June 12 election, Abacha kept telling Babangida that "the boys" would not accept an Abiola presidency and that everybody could die if that was to happen.

Abacha said, "the boys", but everybody knew that it was Abacha and his boys. It was basically an indirect threat.

Babangida was a very skilled politician and he negotiated a safe exit for himself.

He still tried to play a few tricks, but Abacha neutralised all of them. He tried one last time to retire Abacha, but Abacha neutralised it, he then tried to position certain officers as obstacles on Abacha's path, but Abacha retired them immediately.

There was still another problem for Abacha and that was Aliyu Mohammed Gusau.

Abacha knew that Aliyu Mohammed Gusau felt that they had an agreement and that power was supposed to flow from Babangida to Abacha and to Gusau, so he tried to keep Gusau out of his coup plot. Gusau suspected and wanted to go along and Abacha agreed, but he retired Gusau as soon as he became head of state.

People underrate Abacha because of his looks! Whatever he lacks in intelligence relative to IBB and others, he makes it up with hard work! Imagine Abacha outsmarting IBB! The acclaimed Maradona!
