The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to intensify efforts to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, who has been held captive by Boko Haram insurgents for over seven years.

Sharibu was among the 110 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram on February 19, 2018, from Government Girls Science and Technical School in Dapchi, Yobe State. While 104 girls were later released, she was reportedly held back for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

In a statement issued by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association expressed deep concern over Leah’s prolonged captivity, describing it as a painful reminder of the nation’s security challenges and the need to uphold religious freedom.

"The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) stands in solidarity with her family and all who continue to bear the pain of her absence. Leah’s courage and steadfast faith in the face of unimaginable adversity remain a beacon of hope and inspiration to us all," the statement read.

Archbishop Okoh emphasized that "no sacrifice is too great to bring Leah home," urging the government, security agencies, and international bodies to take decisive action to secure her release. CAN also called for renewed efforts to combat insecurity and ensure the safety of all Nigerians.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns over the resurgence of insurgent activities and the need for urgent government intervention to protect vulnerable communities.

On February 19, 2018, the Islamic State - West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked the Government Girls Science and Technical School in Dapchi, Yobe State, Nigeria, and abducted 110 school girls, including Sharibu. While 104 girls were returned to their families and five were reportedly killed in the abduction, ISWAP kept Leah Sharibu reportedly because she refused to comply with their demands and convert to Islam. ISWAP threatened to kill Leah Sharibu if their demands were not met. Their most recent threat has been to keep Leah Sharibu as a “slave for life.”
