That is what should be happening all across Africa. In many prisons across the world, prisoners are mined for free labor in exchange for a reduction in sentence, and this is something that ought to be happening the most in Africa. But unfortunately, Africans aren't ready to lift themselves and their nation out of poverty. undecided
I disagree. The problem with Africa is not that we don't have enough farmers. We have more farmers than the entire Americas, Europe, Australia and China put together.

I have written this down as some form of strategy I
will implement or suggest to Nigeria government many years ago, I didn't know someone in Burkina faso is thinking the same. I have a much more robust approach though

NOETHNICITY:
Ohhh my God!!

We are in the 21st century, for God’s sake! Relying on manual labor to produce food will not solve our problems. What we need is advanced mechanized farming technology.

Many of you who criticize the government would struggle just as much if given power because you lack the knowledge and skills needed to solve real problems.
Even in the advance world, where they have access to modern agricultural equipments and merchineries, they still engaged prisoners in farm labour.
Re: Burkina Faso Turns Prisoners To Farmers by kingthreat(m): 11:44am On Feb 21, 2025
Good idea. Give prisoners an option to work. Create sewing factories and others in prisons. For those that work, let them earn 20% of the regular income and give it to them when they get released. At least prisoners will be of use to existence rather than wasting away.
This still happens in countries like China and prisons don't just take, they make income.

say what you know.
The prisoners that are used for such are those who are not deemed dangerous, close to parole or about to end there sentence etc. Nigeria and most African States do not have those large secured farms like it used to be in the olden days. Forcing a prisoner to labour is called slavery, then when I was at Madonna University Elele 2007 I did see prisoners wearing blue uniforms working at Elele Prison Farm while transiting from Portharcourt to Elele for academic and I'm sure they still have practice.

I love this!

This is commendable. Thousands of Prisoners scattered all over Nigerian prisons should be able to work and contribute back to the society and not just sit and do nothing.

Re: Burkina Faso Turns Prisoners To Farmers by justmondris: 1:54pm On Feb 21, 2025
There is nothing new about this. In Nigeria, you can also hire prisoners to do farm work. They are cheaper, and it provides them with an opportunity to earn extra cash. However, prison officials only allow prisoners who are almost done with their jail term, so they are less likely to attempt running away. There is always an officer on the farm to supervise and coordinate them. In my town, as far back as 15 years ago, people regularly hired them.
Re: Burkina Faso Turns Prisoners To Farmers by Franking: 2:37pm On Feb 21, 2025
Right way to go. Make them productive and when they leave prison they are already skilled. It won't happen in Nigeria. Bunch of clueless and arrogant beings.

Everyone lives and grew up in a society where the value system is 'winner takes it all ' where mediocrity is adorable than hardwork.

This has snowball into leadership and management of national resources.

Hence, the system is in a rotten state.

With all that is going on in that country, 10 to 20 years from now Nigerians will queue for visa to Burkinafaso.

Laudable initiative. We have been advocating for the replication of similar initiative in Nigeria Prisons as a way of combating food crisis and malnutrition in Nigeria Prisons. The prisoners should grow their vegetables, cultivate other crops and rear animals for their consumption in the prison.
