BafanaBafana:
Well, the coup was planned by Igbo politicians and soldiers, carried out by them (even though few mumu soldiers from other tribes were recruited into it thinking it was a revolution), the victims targeted were soldiers and politicians from other tribes. The people who took power after the coup were Igbo.

Even Nzeogwu, one of those who thought it was a revolution mentioned that the coup was tribalistic.

And in their usual fashion, Igbos gloated, celebrated and made fun of northerners after the coup.

Those are the facts. If you like you can give it any name you like.
Oga you are not being sensible. You are only showing desperation and clutching at straws now that a northerner has clarified that it was never an Igbo coup.
The faftbis this Nzeogwu knew that it was never an Igbo coup he was angry that it was bungled in Lagos. Mind you in the same.Lagos an Igbo senior officer was killed by a fellow Igbo officer. This statement has also been confirmed by IBB in his book.

Nothing but truth ojukwu wasn't even aware of the coup he was forced to declare biafra to defend and preserve the lives of igbos when gowon couldn't protect igbos that were been massacred all over nigeria. The narrative of an Igbo coup has been spread and propagated by bigots and empty headed, weak and unpopular politicians who use it to win every presidential election in nigeria they have interests in these empty politicians like buhari and tinibu sponsor these narrative during election seasons because they have absolutely nothing else to use against the igbos.

Before i could beleive this narrative, can we have the name of victim of that coup and also the beneficiary of the coup. Let compare and contrast. Then we can draw our conclusion.
By mere just putting out statement without presenting fact and fugure would not go well with me.
go and read the books recommended, if you are still not satisfied with an eye witness account like IBB ,then you have your own agenda

Random tribal bigot on nairaland vs IBB who was in the army when the coup happened, wrote a book about it and received over 10 billion naira support from political leaders across the country, an event attended by the current President himself. Who will Nigerians believe?

Lies have expiry dates, this one has expired! Now people wonder how Agbadorians will survive if nobody is buying the lies they peddle
IBB also said he didn't annulle the 1993 election. You can believe whatever makes you happy.
Azikwe was the number 2 man in Nigeria, but he miraculously escaped being killed while every other high ranking officers from other ethnic groups were killed. Do you need to be reminded that igbos all over the country celebrated the coup, just like Palestinians celebrated October 7 massacre in Israel?
When you're done deceiving yourself, you'll rest. IBB can say whatever he likes. He was not called Maradona for nothing.

IBB trying to please his wife tribe by telling a different story. grin

We will only believe books written by Gowon, ejoor or danjuma.

This is ejoor book a south south man who witness what Igbo did to his people.
Ejoor has always been a bigot, that was why he was so pained when IBB announced Asaba as the Delta state capital, he made a famous quote that so rebel are now rewarded.
The same Ejoor who in his command of the 3rd battalion was responsible for the coup failing in the east. This was the testimony from Col Sani Bello Rtd who was Ironsi's ADC as a first lieutenant. His first deployment was in Enugu three days before the coup started and he was in the thick of things taking order from his commander Lt Col David Ejoor who had escaped Ifeajuna in Lagos and returned to Enugu as ordered by the army GOC Ironsi.

Re: There Was No Igbo Coup - Rufai Oseni by Believeintruth: 10:44am On Feb 22, 2025
Eleph:
Purely an Igbo coup.
As usual, The manipulative IBB knows where to get his gullible support from.
Name the number of notable high profile Igbo leaders killed in comparison to those of other regions. Who eventually benefited from it, Aguyi Ironsi of course.

'Many people think that Nzeogwu was a tribalistic Igbo. The truth is that he was not. Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, who tricked him into taking part in the coup (it was not Nzeogwu who planned the coup), was a stark, raving Igbo irredentist. But Nzeogwu was not.

Nzeogwu was a friend of Major Adewale Ademoyega, the only non-Igbo plotter among the putschists, although Ademoyega did not kill anyone during the coup.

Major Nzeogwu was fluent in English, Igbo, Hausa and Gwari. He was that intelligent. Nevertheless, he was a homicidal fellow who locked empathy. Today, we now know that such individuals are psychopaths.'

"From that moment, the "putsch" was infiltrated by outsiders to its supposed original intention, and it took on an unmistakably ethnic colouration." IBB

The January 15, 1966, coup began as a nationalistic coup and ended as a purely tribalistic coup.

The following persons planned the January 15, 1966 coup:

Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna-Igbo from Eastern Region.
Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu-Igbo from the Midwest Region.
Major Chris Anuforo-Igbo from Eastern Region.
Major Don Okafor-Igbo from Eastern Region.
Major Adewale Ademoyega-Yoruba from Western Region.

Of these people, only Major Adewale Ademoyega did not take part in the killings. Please find below the names and regions of the people they killed, and you decide whether or not the coup was one-sided.

1. Sir Ahmadu Bello-Fulani from Northern Region.
2. Sir Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa-Gere from Northern Region.
3. Samuel Ladokr Akintola-Yoruba from Western Region.
4. Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh-Itsekiri from the Midwest Region.
5. Hafsatu Bello (wife of Sir Ahmadu Bello)-Fulani from Northern Region.
6. Mrs Latifat Ademulegun (Brigadier Ademulegun's wife, who was eight months pregnant)-Yoruba from Western Region.
7. Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun-Yoruba from Western Region.
8. Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari-Kanuri from Northern Region.
9. Colonel Kur Mohammed-Kanuri from Northern Region.
10. Colonel Ralph Shodeinde-Yoruba from Western Region.
11. Lt. Colonel Abogo Lagerma-Marghi from Northern Region.
12. Lt. Colonel James Pam-Jos native from Northern Region.
13. Lt. Colonel Arthur Unegbe-Igbo from Eastern Region.
14. Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke-Yoruba from Western Region.
15. Police Constable Philip Lewande-Minority from Northern Region.
16. Police Corporal Akpan Anduka-Efik from Eastern Region.
17. Police Corporal Hagai Lai-Minority from Northern Region.
18. Police Corporal Yohana Garkawa-Minority from Northern Region.
19. Lance Corporal Musa Nimzo-Minirity from Northern Region.
20. Ahmed Pategi-Minority from Northern Region.
21. Zarumi Sardauna-Minority from Northern Region.

Captain Ganiyu Adeleke, Lieutenant Olafimihan and Oyewole, did not take part in the planning of the coup. They were simply officers under the command of some of the coupists who obeyed the orders given to them by their superiors. Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke refused such orders and was instantly shot and killed.
Why are you desperately trying to absolve Ademoyega? Stop these lies and misinformation. Ademoyega was with them when the killings happened. If I follow your logic then Capt Nwobosi yoo should be absolved because he didn't shoot Akintola, he arrested him.

How any sane person will see the list of the coupists, the victims, and the beneficiaries and say it wasn't ethnically motivated is what I don't understand.

What I have come to understand is that they know the truth but are too prideful/shameful to admit it, reason they come up with ridiculous narratives like doing it to free Awolowo, a man the coupists or Aronsi neither deemed fit to immediately release or even release several months after.

If the argument is that IBB should be believed because he was part of the military, then maybe we should also believe the likes of Muritala and TY Danjuma who were also part of the military setup at the time, who deemed the coup as an ethnic coup and hence staged a counter coup.

The thing is, when a group of people crave for truth, fairness, and justice only when they're at the receiving end but turnaround to lie, twist facts and outright block every attempt at fairness and justice when they are the offender, then I'm not surprised about their karma as they'recurrently experiencing it in the Nigeria of today. It is one thing to think yourself as smart, but another thing to think everyone else is foolish.

If that's how you reason, abeg you no reach to follow me argue.

IBB was a small boy in the army at that time. We have heard accounts from several key players, some of our elders were also eye witnesses.

If you are in doubt who to believe, don't believe the evil genius IBB. He is only trying to redeem his tarnished image.
