Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida’s attempt to rewrite history regarding the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election has sparked widespread reactions, with Dr. Joe Odumakin, President of the Centre for Change, strongly condemning the move.

Speaking in response to Babangida’s remarks at the launch of his autobiography, Odumakin accused the former leader of engaging in

“Maradona-style double-speak” by admitting responsibility for annulling the election while simultaneously blaming the late General Sani Abacha, his then Chief of Army Staff, for the decision.

“It is ridiculous that Babangida, as Commander-in-Chief, would accuse a deceased man of such a grave offence, knowing fully well that Abacha can no longer defend himself,” Odumakin said.

She questioned Babangida’s claims, pointing out that he had the authority to remove Abacha if the latter had indeed acted against the people’s mandate given to Chief Moshood Abiola.

Odumakin also recalled the repeated delays in Babangida’s transition to civilian rule, noting that he postponed the handover to a democratically elected government in 1990 and 1992 before finally annulling the 1993 election.

“Will he also blame Abacha for those postponements? What about the banning, unbanning, and re-banning of political associations and individuals? Was Abacha responsible for that too?” she asked.

She called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps to correct the historical injustice.

“For now, President Tinubu should posthumously recognize Abiola as a past President of Nigeria and grant his family all the rights and entitlements due to deceased presidents.

“Furthermore, those responsible for the annulment of the 1993 election must be held accountable for the chaos and unrest it unleashed on the nation,” she stated.

The Issele-Ukwu, Delta State-born Joe Okei-Odumakin's historical assertions here are very accurate. I can confirm everything she said I'm the article as someone who was alive during that period.

From reading this thread, I can CLEARLY see that the greatest challenge to the sustainability of truth in any society is coming from a section of the younger generation (who are ALSO CLEARLY online trolls and ethnic bigots) who were NOT alive at the time these geopolitical events took place during the deadly pro-democracy struggles
that all sections of Nigeria (with the full support of foreign governments such as the USA, UK, Canada, etc) fought for back in the early 1990s, OR these younger ones were still SUCKING their mothers' breast milks so they absolutely have NO knowledge of the deadly events, murders, maimings, etc, that Nigerians went through for the restoration of full democracy in 1999 which Ibrahim Babangida had CRIMINALLY denied them on 2 different occasions before the June 12,1993 elections annulment making it the THIRD (3rd) time and some highly irresponsible young trolls and posters here are defending this man!

I recall watching the founder of a multimillion USD top Lagos real estate developer called Veritasi by the name 'Nola who is in his early 30s and a brilliant indigene of Epe in Lagos State. 'Nola bluntly and succinctly told the YouTuber 'Tayo Aina in that 2023 video interview that the younger generation of Nigerians are clearly the most dangerous to the Nigerian society based on some bad character traits he had observed in a lot of youths. He said that comment based off of his observations of the youths as a streetwise young serial entrepreneur himself before giving that damning evidence.

I'm sure most sane Nigerians are against the attempt by IBB to rewrite history.. the only truth in his book is the part he admitted M.K.O Abiola, GCFR of blessed memory won the 1993 presidential election, others are just manipulations.
yea, as you have chosen your own version of truth from the book, others have chosen their own version of truth from same book.

anything you don't like, deny it and repeat to yourself that its a lie....you will be fine.

I don't really understand all these arguments about this IBB book......

Facts are facts....

*The 1966 coup was lead by Nzeogwu in the company of about 5 others with only one (Yoruba) from a different region other than the eastern region

*The casualties of the coup were "majorly" senior military officers from other regions even though the "senior" military officers then were majorly Igbos..

* The leaders of the western and northern regions were executed while the president (though ceremonial) and the eastern leader were not.

*After ironsi took power, it took him months and excessive pressure to hold the coup plotters accountable for their crimes.

They claimed they wanted to install Awolowo...?

Was Awolowo informed in calabar prison that he would be installed?....

How were they sure that Awolowo would entirely accept to be PM after the killings?

Will Awolowo be democratically elected the PM by the house under gun point by the coup plotters or appointmented the PM by the coup plotters?...

Pls events during and after the coup indicates that a group of ppl from a certain region perfectly planned to destabilise the government (either with good or bad intentions) but failed.....and there are consequences particularly when the stakes are high
you said it all without bias. there is no pointing of fingers what happened was what happened.

So an Igbo woman is saying IBB is trying to rewrite history after gloriously debunking the long time lies against the Igbos—that the first coup was an Igbo coup?

shut up.

Abacha was always the power behind the throne. He did the coups that brought Bubu and IBB to power, tossed aside the Yoruba upstart forming interim president and installed himself. Would have even transmuted to a civilian president if not for that CIA apple.
Illiterate, your subordinate can only be as powerful as you allow him.. If he was thrown into jail, heaven would not fall but he was allowed because he was working for the northern interests, just as Aguiyi ironsi refused to punish the igbo coup plotters because they were serving Igbo interests.

Yinka is dead and secondly PMB only posthumously awarded MKO GCFR. He did not recognize him as a former president which is what the writer is asking (and I support).
Sorry i mixed up the name. GCFR stands for "Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic," which is the highest national honorary award in Nigeria, exclusively conferred on presidents. The certificate in the below link clearly shows that he enjoys all the privileges of a GCFR.

I believe now that Abacha was either fully or partly behind the annulment of June 12. Fir various reasons I will list now.

1, When IBB handed over power to an interim government. Abiola was still fighting for his mandate, He never accepted the annulment.. Ibb did nothing to abiola cos they were actually friends.

2. It was Abacha who after forcing Sonekan who was interim president to step aside in a peaceful coup that now ordered arrest of Abiola, IBB was no longer in power nor interested in power. Abacha could have fixed the problem since he was in power since he knew everything about it but choose to show he was either the mastermind or partly involved and went further to finish the job cos he was power hungry.

3. Abacha wanted power and would definitely not let abiola have it. IBB was indifferent but went along with the strongest influence j(ust like buhari did in 2023 elections) and let Abacha have his way or go with his idea.

4. IBB despite being president at the time cannot act alone on a decision of such magnitude. He consulted with people. Who were they? Abacha was one of them surely.

5. If IBB was evil, Abacha was evil pro max.
Correct! He didn't act alone, powers that be had vested interest.
