My own problem is why did Brigadier Ogundipe japa instead of fighting for his right?

How does a senior officer take order from a junior officer? This is premium cowardice

Same reason Muritala was removed from the battle front. A senior military officer must know when to stand and fight and when to stand down and understand the terrain.

Ordinary Ndi North NCO, with access to the armoury, did not obey him and said he would only obey his fellow Northerner.

If Ogundipe had kpaid him, Ogundipe would have not lived to see the next day. Same thing that happened in the officers mess in Abeokuta to Ndigbo officers by Northern NCO's who entered the officers mess and on being ordered to pitbtheir weapons down, opened fire.

Ogundipe did the right thing and I am sure his family are grateful.

This IBB's book happened at the perfect time, it has opened a new can of worms and created a beehive of new perspectives, debates and discourse...at least it's good that one of the most prominent political actors who lived and participated in all the controversies and spotlights that defined our first and second republic has finally spoken his truth about the coups etc. Igbos have finally been vindicated, but Nigeria will never know peace for all the injustices it meted out to Ndigbo till the wounds from history are properly healed.
Re: Awolowo Coup: Nigerians Counter Reno Omokri by franchasng:
Now the truth is coming out.

Awolowo stepped down from being Western Premier to contest federal election to become President and Akintola took over as Western Premier, Awolowo lost the election to Nnamdi Azikiwe and went back to tell Akintola to vacate the Western Premier seat for him, Akintola refused and the western political war began.

Akintola was closer to Sir Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Belewa so they used federal political might to jail Awolowo and was planning an operation wetie using Nigerian army to be led by mostly Igbos and Northern soldiers who dominated the army then. Unfortunately the Igbo soldiers liked Awolowo and briefed Awolowo who then instructed them to stop the operation at all cost. To stop the operation wetie, Nzeogwu, Ifeajuna and Ademelugan decided to carry out a complete revolution to topple the whole government and return the government to a new government to be headed by Awolowo.

Awolowo instructed the military guys that carried out the coup to make sure they kill his political rivalries Akintola, Ahmadu Bello and Belewa. The picture is now getting clearer, thank you IBB.

No wonder Abacha swore that MKO Abiola will never become President because MKO Abiola also sponsored coups like Awolowo and later wanted to become civilian President and Northern Military guys who knew that Awolowo sponsored the 1966 coup swore that MKO Abiola just like Awolowo will never become President.

Now I see why Awolowo before his death advised Yorubas to work with Igbos more politically than with the North.

In case you are wondering, IBB said the Northern political elites later found out after the civil war that it was Obafemi Awolowo that sponsored the 1966 coup but they pretended but swore that Awolowo or any Yoruba person will never become President. Awolowo tried to become President and got frustrated and took his own life by rat poison, may his soul rest in peace.

Abiola thought he could achieve what Awolowo could not achieve so he befriended Northern military guys and invested his ill gotten wealth in them by sponsoring them to carry out coups, only for him to turn around to try to become President and Abacha and the North laughed at him and said over their dead bodies, that was why Abacha annulled the 1993 Presidential election.

The North wanted to do same to Tinubu and Tinubu noticed it and formed sick, and using Lagos wealth, he went behind to buy INEC Chairman after using El Rufai and Co to win the APC Primaries. Forget Tinubu is a very dogged politician, I really respect him for that.

IBB also made another vital point Igbos should learn from. IBB said that Igbos made mistake fighting for Yorubas in the 60s, that it was Igbo people's mistake of trying to stand for the Yorubas that made North to turn against Igbos.

Same way the North and Yorubas came for Igbos for standing up for Goodluck Jonathan an Ijaw man.

We Igbos of today must learn from history and from our mistakes of the past.

Ojukwu tried to fight for Ogundipe to take his rightful position as Head of State instead of his Junior Gowon.

Nzeogwu and co tried to help Awolowo fight his political battle with Akintola, Ahmadu Bello and Belewa and it bounced back against Igbos.

To all Igbos reading this, please spread this message, the best thing Igbos should do in Nigeria of today is to remain onlookers while focusing on their entrepreneurship and business growth worldwide and let Yoruba slug it out with their Hausa-Fulani masters this time.

Honestly, IBB is opening a whole lot of truths, the coming months and years ahead of 2027 will be interesting shocked shocked

Ojukwu was pretty much the only Southern officer who single-handedly stood up and called out the hierarchical imbalance of command that the Northern officers created by skipping Ogundipe and other senior Southern military officers that were senior in rank to Gowon in Ironsi's vacancy, Ogundipe ran after a Northern NCO several ranks below him blatantly refused to take orders from him...the North bullied their way into forcing Gowon as the next supreme military head of state, while the South as usual chickened out and buckled.

It was mostly Igbo officers( Ojukwu, Madiebo, Patrick Anwunah etc) who refused and never cowered before the North led by hot-heads like Muritala Muhammed.

Same thing we talked about concerning Yorubas...very fearful people.

When 1993 election was annulled,Abiola ran away to London...u can go read it yourself.

Same way Brigadier Ogundipe ran away.

Same way they have been running away from Fulani till date.

You are right that Ikemba called out the hierarchical imbalance but guess what, he was in Enugu surrounded by trusted Eastern soldiers (Northern soldiers in the east had no access to weapons before the eventual exchange happened) so he could afford to be blowing grammar.

Ogundipe was surrounded by Northern NCO with weapons, sometimes it is best to use sense for the sake of your family. That they didn't kpai Ogundipe was a surprise as Northern NCO's had by that time tasted blood (Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi) and realised they could get away with anything.

You are here calling him a coward for being realistic about his own perilous situation.

I’m enjoying this drama.

Ronus are running helter skelter trying to repaint narratives.

If you think you’re the only one good at making up stories, just know there’ll be a time someone better at that will spring up.

This era of social media where anyone can just cook up conspiracy theories and it may sell has changed legacy media of this years where a few that control the media just give the people narratives they want.

Northern soldiers in the east were disarmed because Ojukwu and the eastern government establishment took control and ordered them to quickly disarm..., and they did. Easterners became proactive in terms of taming their excesses. If that was not done, they most probably would have escalated their killings in the east.

What were your garrulous uncles doing in the west to allow some ragtag Northern army boys to quickly dominate them and take control of the whole western Nigeria? They even killed your brother Fajuyi the Premier of western Nigeria, and none of your uncles asked any questions.. They were gearing up to go and kill the igbos..

It is a pity that until the Hausa coup took out the Igbos after the Igbo coup, Aguiysi didn't release Awolowo and didn't try his brother coupists.

You ovbiously know little about history or your need to paint Ndi Yoruba cowards has made you lose your mind. I will try my best to educate you on the off chance that your problem is the first.

As soon as Northern NCO's grabbed hold of the keys to the armoury at Abeokuta, it was over.

They got in touch with their fellow conspirators all over the county who did the same and sadly Ndigbo soldiers of any rank became an endangered species.

I believe they couldn't get to the one in Enugu because the news had filtered through of the madness, they weren't many over there (wetie had caused a lot of them to be moved to Yorubaland) and the GOC managed to get hold of the keys first.

Nothing to do with Ndigbo bravery or Ndi Yoruba cowardice, it was a stroke of luck as they would have done the same they did up north or out west were they lined every Ndigbo soldier up and shot them in cold blood.

You are saying none of your brothers asked questions about Fajuyi, it was and still is foolhardy to challenge people with more firepower than you, ragtag or not, I am sure you don't need to be told that.

Ikemba started a war against an army with more superior firepower, where is the bravery in that? The same Gowon he refused to accept orders from, ruled the country while he had to run away into exile.

What colour is your own foolishness in thinking you can take on a soldier, seething from the January coup?
Re: Awolowo Coup: Nigerians Counter Reno Omokri by JAMO84: 10:30pm On Feb 23, 2025
Awolowo planned the coup from prison, according to coward ibos. But when hausa wanted to revenge, they didn't touch Awolowo, they went for all the ibos in the military and wiped them off. So the likes of TY Danjuma and Murtala Mohammed didn't know the tribe that planned and execute the coup before they took out their revenge on ibos?

At least if you want to be cowards as usual, come up with a logical argument to hide your cowardice.

Many commenters are too young to know what happened. They would rather go with false stories and theories they learnt over the years to brew more hatred. Maradona aka Evil genius has provided an opportunity for them to justify long term held ridiculous beliefs. No surprises about the lies for anyone who lived through those dark years.
