What happens to the eggs that don't hatch?
Them fit fry am chop?😩
Those are eggs that were not fertilised by the cock, they don't hatch. Throw them far away, it's rotten already

Selling them. Although they're not as expensive as broilers, they still are good business, cos the feeding is very very minimal. An adult local hen goes for about 6k.

Right now, i'm focusing on getting their population up to like 70, then I can sell off like 50 at once. Their population is currently at 6 adults, and 7 chicks. That's 13. By the end of the month, i'm expecting at least 17 chicks from the 22 eggs on ground. That would bring their total population to 30 by month end. They increase in sort of like a geometric progression. It's really incredible to watch.
Oga some would still die

Local chickens are terrible as meat, you cant even enjoy the bone as with broilers. For most people, it's not worth keeping them, better noilers and broilers

make your environment clean cos of snakes n also when they are brooding u can put knife behind them

It's a psychological message that once they don't hatch all u will kill them

I teared all these with goats n cattles when I was young n It was fr young age that I learnt how to inject goats n cattles.

If u can create a little space u can add goats to it, they kid twice a year n u will make money
cheesy cheesy

Knife ke grin

Keep it up. My Noiler hatched her eggs after laying more than 80 eggs. I have been packing her eggs and eating them until recently when she showed sign of incubation, I left 6 eggs for her. Found only 4 don't know what happened to the other two she hatched 2 and left 2.only 1 chick survived and with her now. Am happy though. She will improve over time
Yeah. Cool.

No hawks in the area, I believe?
They are hawks, but they prefer open fields...my garden has trees and shrubs the chickens can quickly hide under when the hawks come swooping down.

Very interesting.
After buying chicken for outrageous prices last Christmas, I decided it was best to rear local ones even it it's for consumption. Your story is really inspiring.
Cool

DIVINEEVIDENCE:
Please how can one identify noilers?
The easiest way I can explain...if you see chickens that resemble local chickens, but appear to be bigger than an average local chicken, it's probably Noiler. They usually come all the colors of local chickens, and.get very big.

I have a problem however with folks who raise chickens in shared living spaces, like those in flats within a common estate.

These local birds make a hell of a noise, waking kids up and not allowing visitors to even hear their hosts.

How did you deal with this, and do you think it is justified for people to rear several animals in common living quarters?
That's why i don't like keeping too many male chickens. I have only two male.local chickens, and it's only one that crows...and it's not so loud. Besides, the compound is big, and we're the only one that live in the compound.

That's what happens when from birth everything was done for you.
Drink water from the fridge, wash hands from the closet, bath by nanny, clothed and carried to school in a bus or okada with snacks or even food for midday. Just no opportunity to taste the other side of life.

Now to even eat local chicken is a problem. You or some people prefer the chemical called broilers to naturally bred ones because of the "hard bones"?

We're in trouble.

Local chickens are more delicious than the broilers.
debatable....broiler is softer and absorb ingredients better..local tough to tear with slimmer meat

I'm telling you. That person doesnt know what he is missing. I personally prefer local chicken to broilers, but quite unfortunately, I've noticed they have been scarce lately. Local chickens are likened to bush meat. Just tasty as bush meat.

Not true. Even with just salt, local chicken have great taste but you see broiler breast, it tastes like yam. Even old layers or cockerels taste better than broiler.
Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by ochiosa(m):
Kudos, you are trying is not easy. I have something like that but a bit integrated because I have goat turkey and local chickens. I sold over 200 local chickens last year just that they were every cheap because of their size.
Somebody adviced that I should look for Fulani chicken to improve their size so am looking for where to get it, am in Delta. You can check my system up on Facebook. Imobifarms on Facebook

This is lovely, thanks for posting. I would have loved to have these in my compound, but them go chop and scatter the crops I planted.

I don't want to deal with chicken ravaging my tomatoes, peppers, maize, groundnut and vegetables I plant this year

I'll sell mainly too market women in the various markets around my area. I'll also advertise in my area, like how the person we bought from advertised.
You reminded me of when I was rearing local birds. Get them a good cage and also secure against snakes. One night there was a commotion in my cage. Came out and saw a big black cobra leaving. It came for the eggs and ended up striking the mother hen who put up some resistance.
There is actually a marker for local hen.

I got some OPC men in my area to give me the trap they use in catching bush meat, and then set in the path the cat passes. Around 11pm I heard the thing snap, and there was a little struggle. When I got out, I saw a few strands of cat hair from the cat's body around the cage. It had escaped cos it wasn't fully in when the trap snapped, and it was able to escape. But after that day, we never saw it again, and it never came close to the trap again.
Next time if you want to kill a cat that preys on your chicken, fried fish (eja dindin) that smells very well, is their favorite food, just put enough rat poison in it, it will kill it.

Okay.
My last question. Who buys local/native fowls? I only know that nigerians mainly buy agric fowls to be slaughtered in easter/Christmas!
There is a market for it. It will suprise you. Sometimes it is used for the preparation of medicine by native medicine men. Some other person buy it for consumption because it is more tastier albeit, very bony

For native medicine by native medicine men

Nice trend. I have four native fowls, dog has eaten two remaining two.
Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by obamat: 10:36pm On Feb 23, 2025
The fastest way to multiply your chicken is by withdrawing the chicks immediately after hatching and allow the mother hen continue her life. She will start to lay in another 3weeks.
You breed the chicks for like 2 months and throw them into the garden.
You can also get a noiler roaster to increase the sizes of your chicken.
