Private Schools Contributing To The Declining Standard Of Education In Nigeria. by NairalandVDM(op): 12:05pm On Feb 24, 2025
This topic may appear controversial to the readers, but I feel it is a known fact.
I have been a Private sch teacher for about 7years and have taught in three private schools in three different States of the federation within this period. And they all seem to have same negative factors binding them together. This topic is not in any way meant to denigrate, belittle or disparage private schools because I know many of us here are private sch owners. Of course, you sch owners(a few though) are doing a great job. However, majority of you are not in alignment with the core mandate of the establishment of private schools.
Private schools are meant to complement the efforts of the public schools owned by our governments. This is the core mandate. But private schools have deviated from this. Private individuals establish schools for the purpose of "Business". It's strictly business and not borne out of the desire to groom the younger generation. This is why they charge exorbitant and outrageous fees and extort money from their clients. Do you know that no matter how Rich & wealthy you may be, if you decide to venture into Establishment of a sch without having a passion for education, you're likely to fail in managing the school upon it's establishment?
Private schools hire "Quacks" as teachers and administrators then pay them peanuts. Teachers in private schools are sufficiently equipped to teach. They are not professionals. You can be teaching well and still be a quack because you weren't trained.
Indiscipline on part of the learners. Many sch owners do not discipline their learners because they fear parents may withdraw their wards if they are being disciplined. Consequently, these learners become spoilt brats. I witnessed situations where learners insulted my colleagues, called them derogatory names, disobeyed & even fought their teachers, yet the school owners never took any action against the learners. Education is in character and learning, but private schools are not bothered about the character of Their learners.
Parents would come to seek admission for their wards, and after taking a placement test, you discover they won't be able to cope in the class they want to be admitted into. And instead of the school owners to be frank and succinct with these parents, they will not. They will target accept the money and take the child to the class the parents want & not where the child should be.
There are Schools nicknamed "Miracle centres" where people go to pay and cheat in their exams to have good grades. I know of someone who had 8A's and can't communicate in pidgin language. The system is really bad. Even when supervisors from the Ministry of Education come to inspect these private schools, they do nothing really meaningful. They only come to get bribed by the school owners and then take positive reports back to their office.
There are several other factors that I can't include here, if you have been there, you would perfectly understand what I am saying.

Mr intellect, who makes a statement from his finding without a precise fact figure,. I see you.
Next time as stated in your first paragraph
The right statement should be"majority or 80% of Private schools hire "Quacks" as teachers and administrators. You can't completely discard the effort off minority doing the right thing, just because you want to pass a message or express you view. It simple show how bitter you are and lack emotional management and show no difference from the quaks as started that why you couldn't make the minority.
