Nigerians matter is complicated, greed has eaten deep into the fabric of an average Nigerian. Food Prices are high, farmers smile, consumers groan. Food Prices comes down, consumers smile, farmers groan. So, all these while, farmers dey happy while people dey attack Government. But come to think of it, since Buhari closed the borders to help local farmers, it has gone from bad to worse. A lot of price manipulations have been going on, while they smile to the bank.
Tinubu will bring it down and any farmer or trader that wants to lament will lament tire.

If I'm in position to control importation of goods and services, if an imported product from far away countries become cheaper than local products, there will be no need to protect such local industries. I will completely open the borders for the benefit of the general masses.

Why the border is still totally or partially closed on certain commodities such as grains is puzzling because it makes no sense at all.

I hate hoarding in all forms for profits

I read of a farmer who bought 1000 bags of corn at N75k each for hoarding purposes. He was hoping it would go higher so he can make a killing.

Guess what? A bag of corn is now selling for N50k so he has lost N25k per bag already.

Same thing with fx speculators. Palm Oil speculators too.

Same kind of evil behaviour.

The day members of the Association of Phone Charging Businesses stormed NEPA's office to protest against the improved power supply in my town, claiming it was harming their businesses, was the day I became truly disillusioned with Nigeria's issues. We Nigerians often create our own problems and tend to exploit each other, yet we consistently shift the blame onto our leaders. This incident showcased how we sometimes choose to prioritize short-term personal gains over long-term national progress.

Na lie bro,is not possible
The situation is quite difficult to comprehend, but it is the reality. The very individuals who rely on generators to offer phone charging services and those who profit from selling these generators often actively resist improvements in our power supply. Similarly, farmers, who continue to benefit from relatively moderate production costs, still prefer to maintain high food prices to safeguard their own financial interests.
Surprisingly, both groups frequently blame the government for the high cost of essential services and goods, effectively deflecting responsibility for a situation they have helped perpetuate. These behaviors highlight the complex, interwoven challenges we face in our pursuit of progress and the importance of addressing individual 'attitudes and mindsets' as we work to create a more equitable society.

Demand has overtaken supply. They need to increase production to maximize profit. By what percentage was the price reduction that warrants this outcry? A mudu of yellow garri used to be 1200-1300 is now 1500 Naira. Government should import and subsidize farm inputs, machineries and fertilizers. So that the so called farmers will quit whining about incurring loss.

“This decline in the prices, as I understand, may not be unconnected to the fact that some farmers are gradually returning to their farms in places like Zamfara and Sokoto, where farmlands were inaccessible due to insurgency.”

market in Dukku LGA of Gombe State, attributed the fall in the price of food items to gradual return of farming activities in areas affected by insurgency, leading to increase in the food production volume in the country.

“Just three weeks ago, a 100kg bag of cowpea was sold at N100,00 – N102,000, but now it goes for N85,000 – 95,000. Maize was sold this week at between N47,000 and N48,000 as against N52,000 – N55,000 some weeks ago.

“This decline in the prices, as I understand, may not be unconnected to the fact that some farmers are gradually returning to their farms in places like Zamfara and Sokoto, where farmlands were inaccessible due to insurgency.”

‘It’s discouraging,’ farmers lament

Meanwhile, some farmers have raised concerns that this trend could lead to losses and even discourage people from farming.

Speaking to our reporter, Shittu Alhassan Shu’aibu, a farmer in Ningi LGA of Bauchi State, urged government to come to the rescue of farmers by subsidising major farm inputs such as fertilizers and chemicals, warning that farmers might be forced out of production if prices of produce continue to decline while price of farm inputs remain high.

“Honestly, the downward trend in the food prices is discouraging, particularly for farmers who had purchased farm inputs at higher costs. It is even more daunting for irrigation farmers, considering the additional cost they incur in buying fuel, pumping devices and other inputs. This, as I see it, will discourage starters, who perhaps were forced to start farming because of the harsh economic situation in the country.

“If the government wants to introduce a policy that will crash price of food items, it is better to start by subsidising farm inputs so as to at least reduce the production costs incurred by the farmers. As it is now, the price of farm inputs hasn’t reduced but that of the produce has drastically dropped. How much did farmers buy a bag of fertilizer last production season? So, I think a lot needs to be done before adopting certain policies like importation of food items. Importation can be justified when there is scarcity, but right now I think we have enough.”

But Salahuddeen Abubakar, a farmer in Jigawa, held a contrary view, insisting that it was premature to assume that prices would not shoot up again.

“I think it is too early to conclude that the prices will not surge again. It is not yet June, July or August, which is the peak period when prices of food items typically skyrocket due to limited supply.

“Even farmers who sold their produce immediately after harvest when the price was lower than it is now could have made some profits. Those who will be negatively affected, I think, are hoarders and people who want to make excessive profits.

“The major concern is that the price of farm inputs is decreasing but only slightly, and this may discourage farmers if the trend persists.” he added.

Importation of grains ill-timed –AFAN

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has said the recent importation of grains into the country is ill-timed, noting that it will negatively impact local farmers who have already produced grains.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa service, the National Publicity Secretary of AFAN, Mohammed Magaji, said the ideal time to import grains into the country should be when farmers had exhausted their supplies.

“The ideal time to import grains should be when farmers have sold out their stock and the price is high, especially around July, August and September, during which even the farmer himself is looking for grains to buy at cheaper prices,” he said.

Mohammed also lamented that despite significant drop in food prices, the cost of essential farm inputs like fertilizers, seeds and chemicals continues to rise, warning that this will discourage farmers.

Imagine the degree of WICKEDNESS that'd drive a person to COMPLAIN about reduction in the price of something as ESSENTIAL as food.

Farmers who were previously CHASED out of their farmlands and DEPRIVED of their livelihoods are tentatively returning to their farms and Shittu Alhassan Shu’aibu is WAILING about his bottom line.

EVIL people like him will collaborate with terrorists and bandits to create HELL for other farmers because of GREED.

Shittu Alhassan Shu’aibu is happy to STARVE the population as long as he makes MONEY.

WICKEDNESS!
You can't blame these farmers. The blame still goes to the governments. These farmers do not have any support from the governments. In developed countries, the governments subsidize farming implements. The governments of developed countries also buy these farm products from farmers at exorbitant prices and sell to the public at subsidize prices thereby bringing enough money to farmers. In this Nigeria, no support from the governments. Farmers pay for these implements. They hire land for cultivation. They pay bandits before planting season. Bandits are also being paid before harvest. Why would they not complain? Do you know how much waiters govt gives to Dangote when his importing in name of concession? Dangote can't be where he is now without support from the government.

Okay. If important goods are cheaper than our own locally produced goods, no need for government to help nigeria farmers to stabilize or giving them incentives. Am i right?

What are you saying?
In today's Nigeria, every Tom, Dick and Harry wants to do tech because they hear that there's money in it. Why is it that a quarter of those people are not looking towards farming since you all think farmers are making huge money from it? The Alhasan guy you quoted said government should subsidize the cost of farm inputs like fertilisers and chemical so that more production can happen.

How can somebody spend hundreds of thousands on fertiliser, chemical, fuel, labour, transportation and logistics and then government will just drop a policy that makes such person sale at a lost?

Why not initiate that policy at the start of each farming season?

Nigerians hate it whenever government says they should consider farming. Instead, they go online to wail about rising cost of food in the country. Instead of the government to sit with the farmers to come up with a better policy, next thing is to open border for importation, forgetting that some of those countries they are importing from are into mechanized farming, whereas our farmers are into manual labour due to lack of government funding.

Indeed, the problem of Nigeria is Nigerians

ThierryJay:
I've always known that this food price hyper-inflation was very artificial which explains these farmers current lamentations.

Why should raw food prices with little or no imported inputs have the same inflation rate as other products that are the true big victims of exchange rate decline? This is an indicator of pricing manipulations which is why farmers have been making supernormal profits in the past one year and half.

The impact of insecurity and transport costs are there but overestimated as excuses. Insecurity has been around for a while even when a bag of rice was 30k.

Logistics is high but the average impact is reduced when the cost is spread over several units of farm products being transported. But farmers will still sell a unit at 4 or 5 times the previous price as if the entire 400% petrol increase was used to move a single unit.

They've had their time. May the majority be better off for it.
Yet, millions of Nigerians don't want to make such superficial profits by not considering farming as a career. Same people that will want a recruiter to pay them N500k for knowing how to display "hello world" on the browser in the name of tech bro.

Take up this challenge; cultivate 1 hectare of land and plant maize. God help you Fulani did not temper with it and you are able to harvest it. Sell it at the price you think is fair, let's see if you will want to go back again next farming season. Make sure you write down every thing you spent on a book.

Social media has given everyone a platform to say things he or she doesn't have a single knowledge of
