How can council do anything for you when your council tax is scanty or zero?

Do you pay 190 pounds a month to the city authority where you live?

You get what you pay for

So being self employed excludes you from paying taxes.
The emphasis isn't on the self employment but on the sector... i.e. informal sector.

How many bricklayers, painters, manual labourers would you ask to pay taxes in Nigeria when there are no regulations‽ Besides a lot of those in the informal sector still pay taxes by way of market levies and local government dues, those are also also types of taxes.

Only 10% of Nigerians are eating the national cake angry
10% justified by Pandora Bitter Obi, the communist labourer who was formerly in capitalist PDP until Wike kicked his ass out for ebilokan to get an easy path to Aso Rock.

[quote author=NLCreator post=126854133]Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has defended the purchase of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for members of the national assembly.

There have been reports that the leadership of the 10th national assembly has bought SUVs for all lawmakers.

Each SUV is said to be valued at N160 million.

The LP had asked members of the party in the national assembly to kick against “wastage”.

While responding to questions during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the former governor of Anambra said the SUVs are not personal cars of the lawmakers, noting that they are for official use.

“Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the house. I have actually discussed this issue with them,” Obi said.

“Surprisingly, I can tell you I heard that these vehicles are official cars. They have to use it. It is meant for office.

“So it is not as if it is their vehicle. They said it is official cars and you are meant to use it while you are in the senate.”

Obi also hinted at contesting for the country’s number one position in 2027, adding that Nigeria deserves dedicated and visionary leaders who will lead the country towards a brighter future.

That's how we roll in this geographical contraption. 200 million mumu of us.

chisomkachy:
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s first supplementary budget includes a fleet of SUVs for himself and his wife, a presidential yacht and the renovation of his villa amid a cost-of-living crisis for some of the poorest people in the world.

The proposal — which seeks additional funding beyond the annual budget approved by Tinubu’s predecessor — comes as the government asks Nigerians to persevere through pain caused in part by a raft of economic reforms ushered in by the new president. Africa’s most populous country faces rampant unemployment, soaring food prices and a plummeting currency.

Federal lawmakers approved the president’s request for extra spending on Thursday, but eliminated the provision of 5 billion naira ($6.01 million) to buy a presidential yacht. Instead, they doubled the allocation to a student loan fund to 10 billion naira, according Abubakar Bichi, chairman of an appropriations committee in the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers approved 1.5 billion-naira proposed to purchase SUVs for the office of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu — an amount larger than that allocated to many individual federal colleges. The supplementary budget also proposes almost 6 billion naira to purchase SUVs for the presidency — more than the amount initially allocated to fund a student loan program for poor families.

That is the main problem i have with Nigeria tax. Different entities and agents will storm your shop for tax. You don't know which of them is the real tax-men.
If you see what dis keke riders suffer in the hands of revenue collectors, you will be sad!
Baxilexi:
Nigeria has one of the highest rates of informal taxation I’ve witnessed anywhere in the world.
People with sticks and reflector vests are tax collectors and do not remit to the government.

Every Nigerian pays VAT Mr Senate president,
Every Nigerian using public transport (air, land and sea) indirectly pays tax
Every Nigerian who owns a bank account pays tax
Every employed Nigerian pays tax

Kindly educate yourself Mr Senate president.

Do you recognize that households in nigeria are very poor?
nairalanda1:
The problem is, that the income tax revenue is paid by less than 30% of the population. (PwC put it at 13% in 2016)...working population.

IMport duties are not up to 10 trillion, VAT was 7 trillion last year, and that cannot fund out budget at all.

Budgets are not supposed to be funded by majority income tax

That’s a very badly run economy that will collapse under slight recession or job cuts

Why pay tax when your government can borrow trillions in a second? The budget for the last 15 years isn't run from taxes but foreign loans.

Nigeria government already know they can't collect half of citizens salary for tax! You render the economy in fragile state and you still want to collect the citizens oxygen so as to build amenities! How is that even possible!
nairalanda1:
In the UK you pay half your earnings in income tax , then you pay things like council tax, which can be as high as 190 pounds a month.

Nigeria income tax is not up to half your salary. The equivalent of council tax in most Nigerian cities is non existent

No wonder you don't see amenites.

You get what you pay for.

People don't pay taxes willingly, it is the duty of the government to set up a system that makes it hard for citizens to evade tax.

Even here, I use all the tax loopholes to avoid paying of taxes by registering about two companies.

No one likes to pay tax but the government should set up a system that makes it very hard not to pay tax.

And in response.

USA :

In 2023, individual income taxes comprised 48 percent of all federal revenues. This is followed by payroll taxes, which provided 35 percent of all revenues

UK

39%

Nigeria

Less than 10%

Plus most of our income is from oil, whose prices we do not control. Therein lies the problem.
