My late mother including relatives that worked with him said Nigeria dodged a great calamity by Murtala's death. She was in the Army signal corps. First 6 months of IBB he was celebrated too

The interesting thing about OBJ was he was a child of circumstances, he never asked for anything and he never begged for any position. They all fell at his feet. Obj never plotted any coup. The army urged him to pick up the mantle after Murtala was killed in a coup he OBJ didn't lead. He was initially reluctant but they persisted he led the army.

Likewise in 1999, he never declared interest to contest, the Americans arranged for only him to be brought out from prison, given party ticket and allowed to rule.

OBJ is not power monger.
