Journalism — Spell A Person’s Name How He/she Wants To Be Called. by meobizy(op): 1:14am On Mar 01, 2025
I’ve noticed the different spellings of Ukrainian President’s Zelenskyy’s name on Nairaland. I did a Google search and found out different international media outlets spell his name however they feel.

In journalism classes, I was told to refer to people how they prefer their names called (and spelled). As such, president Zelenskyy’s name should always be reported with a double y at the end.

See his X — formerly Twitter — account for example; @ZelenskyyUa.

Nairaland, follow suit.

Funny how the word censor can’t be programmed to correct this. Lack of innovation and creative thinking are the death of Nairaland.

Is it Kyiv or Kiev?

Turkey or Turkiye?

When they put this much effort in spelling African names, I will welcome this picture.

NL can catch the extra y but it's not significant to us, for now.

This is the problem with a vast number of folks NOT paying attention to little details.

Indeed, your observation is spot on and it's brilliant that you pointed that out for other folks to see. I've always used the correct Ukrainian spelling "Zelenskyy" in all my posts, knowing full well that a lot of people are reading and learning.

A lot of the major international media consisting of the major U.S. news outlets and others actually got his name spelling right. The same CANNOT be said of the smaller news outlets, insidious bloggers, and hungry YouTubers with very bad diction.

It’s intellectually LAZY for anyone to mangle other people's names deliberately or not in terms of spelling and/or in terms of pronunciation.
