Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Stepout23(op): 9:26am On Mar 03, 2025
Education is one of the biggest investments parents make for their children, and in Nigeria, the debate between private and public schools is always ongoing. Many parents believe that private schools offer better quality education, improved facilities, and a stronger academic foundation, but the high cost often raises the question: Is it really worth it?

Advantages of Private Schools
Smaller Class sizes: More attention for each student
Better Facilities: Access to modern classrooms, libraries, and tech tools
Quality Teachers: Some argue that private school teachers are more committed
Extracurricular Activities: Exposure to robotics, coding, arts, and sports
Parental Involvement: More structured communication with parents

Challenges of Private Schools
Expensive Tuition: Some schools charge millions per year
Not Always Better: Some private schools focus more on profit than education
Pressure on Kids: High expectations can sometimes stress students
Social Exposure: Less interaction with students from different backgrounds

The Public School Reality
Public schools, though more affordable, often face issues like overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and teacher shortages. However, some federal government colleges and top public schools still provide quality education.

What Do You Think?
Are private schools worth the cost in Nigeria?
Have you had a great experience with a public school?
Should the government do more to improve public education?
Let’s discuss! Drop your thoughts below! 👇🏽

There is the age long debate.

Who does business better

Government or Private citizens?

Private citizens right?

But when it comes to security and actual country economy they insist government must be in charge.

For 9ja NO!
I felt EMBARASSED when I came to UK, my CERTIFICATES were worthless ( only when you back it it up with a Programme or Course here) u can then break into their JOB STREAMLINE, mind you same Course can be Done without MY CERTIFICATES from Background and still give both parties same OPPORTUNITIES, the best job i got was TEACHING ASSISTANT
which landed me slap from 4 yrs old pupil jus few days i got the Job ( i just told my wife i never see job oo)
that is how bad i can say it is, don't get me Wrong, Education is not a Scam, but why pay HIGH for EDUCATION that is not WORTHY OR WORLD STANDARD across 9ja SHORES!

Now I paid thousands pounds to patch into IT.

Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Yugoslavia247(m):
Lol.

Even in US private schools are sought after.

Even my parents had the funds, i would never have smelt any govt dungeon call school.

Most government school from primary to tertiary can hardly boast of good toilets.

They prefer to setup laterine.
Same school that teach the dangers of laterine.

There is no fun in poverty.

For NYSC camp, na pit laterine.

As in why do we treat ourselves more like goats.
Does being black and African a dark cloud on our reason and empathy.

Why should Abuja camp have better toilets and northern camps more of prison yards.

If you can afford private school education for your kids, enrol them as the Nigerian public school system is a mess.

Nairaland with pointless debates even in 2025. It seems we’ll see a resurgence of topics like manual washing vs washing machine, manual transmission vs automatic and fuel generators vs solar panels. Don’t forget the old faithful; the gourd in the village vs electric fridges.

The average mongrel here is the product of government schooling. It’s easy to know which form of education is superior. Nairaland youths can’t comprehend simple write-ups and are quick to display ignorance in threads.

In Nigeria? NEVER!
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Mandesz(m):
Private schools are seriously setting the pace in the Nigeria education industry, esp., primary and the secondary schools. I went to public schools all through but I wished I've gone through private primary and secondary schools.
I was one of the best in both schools.

In secondary school, teachers came to class when they like and some came less than three times in a whole term.

I sat for geography in waec but I was only taught in ss1 by an Igbo corper(may God bless him).

I sat for biology in waec but was only taught in ss1 and ss2.

I sat for account in waec but was never taught anything throughout ss classes.

I sat for English (paper 3 oral English) but was never taught anything.

Private schools have their shortcomings but incomparable with the other.

I know guys whom we finished secondary school together but can neither read nor write. It's not common in private schools. Some can read from primary 3.

It's important to separate the rich from the poor as even God did not allow Solomon the king to live among the poor.

A rich child has no business interacting with a poor child as the poor child will negatively impact the rich child.
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Pootle:
no

private is ok for basic education especially primary education, secondary and university level should be public, why because public institution build the student to be independent, private most time get things done for the pupils to appease the parent. government school no send your mama.

primary school the brain still need careful guidance that public schools wont give, most private secondary school run special center for their ssce exams
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by jericco1(m): 12:17pm On Mar 03, 2025
All my kids will be attending private institutions from kindergarten to tertiary

Our government institutions are nothing to write home about.

The teachers do not even care since na government there is zero accountability
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Meti99(m):
I think "Private" should be well defined.
I guess you mean Privately owned schools which are not government schools.
I have seen several privately owned schools that are worse off government schools especially Primary and Secondary schools...
Most teachers are not qualified.
When a teacher who teaches in nursery class is also asked to teach secondary school pupils and a whole lots of mess.

Prolly you should call it "Classic Private schools" compared to Government schools 😂
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Ahmback(m): 12:18pm On Mar 03, 2025
Depends on the instances.
I am a product of both privates (Primary to JSS3) and Public (Senior Science) schools and I can tell you, private schools laid a very good foundation and that one government school gave me a very good finishing-touches. I had hands-on experience with practicals in areas like Chemistry, Physics and Biology, coupled with a functional library and computer lab.
Only downside was, as a public school, too much farm work and poor feeding conditions. It was a boarding school by the way

Education is scam in Nigeria of Today... Either public school or private... The PTF and EduTrust Funding and PTA funding.. or as been embezzled by the school administration..

They no longer care about your Wards ..they are only after the profits...

Reason why this genz lacks morals there parents failed them and government too failed them.... There grandparents too no longer preach morals to them...

It's a shameful world right now...

Everything is now messed up

Depends
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Gerrard59(m): 12:20pm On Mar 03, 2025
Yes, but it depends on what you want to get out of private schools. Also, private schools na according to your pocket. Personally, with my knowledge and thoughts about pre-higher education, I'm a strong advocate of math based education. For that reason, I align more or prefer schools owned or managed by the Catholic Church. A good alternative will be Ambassadors College owned by Seun Osewa's family. The school is built on a strong math pedagogy. Basically any school that wholeheartedly promotes strong math education.

Not so much of schools that promote their British curriculum or UK pedagogy educational offerings. The Brits aren't so good at math, even within Europe. That goes to the Swiss, Germans and French.

Depends
Some (actually a lot) private schools are owned by people who couldn't get a better paid job hence started school business
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by papyjaypaul:
Let me share with you something about education.

The best education a child can get is from the parents. I know it's difficult for parents, they are busy, this and that but no matter the school you go to, if you are not grounded from home, you will waste the education.

Parents are lazy today and they want the school to do their parenting work for them, that's why they don't mind paying millions to help them raise their child but you see what happens in these schools is the product of bad parents who will then contaminate your child who has good parents but they have not taught how to wash your body from diseases.

No one can care about your child as you the parent so decide what you want in this life with your child and make the foundation the best. Parents are now understanding homeschooling has advantages.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_myfqQ29Y0?feature=shared

I know of parents who send their children to private schools so that the children can have future networking with the creme de la creme. Money is what rich people are paying other people to teach what they fail to teach their own kids because they don't have time. What are you teaching your child? Children learn by seeing, not what you tell them. Education is not only within the four walls of schools. What we are breeding are prisons of the mind. They start to socialize your child to think in one direction, you can't teach that child to think critically anymore. He is lost to the system. Start the education at home, expose your child to real life experience. Let them follow you to work where it is possible, let their mom stop working where it is possible and give them the best education you can give them from father to mother. How many years does it take to raise a child? You can survive as an adult but once their foundation is broken, they are lost. They will never leave you if you bring them up well because the memories you create for them at a young age is what they will remember in life. Students don't forget good teachers. Raise your child to be able to survive the real world ANYWHERE. Don't let them brainwash the child. Lastly, we are not living this world alive, don't put your child in senseless competitions that are there to massage the ego of their parents.

Paying above 500k for primary school children is pure waste of money
Paying above 600k for Secondary students is waste of money.

Then again, a lot of those super expensive private schools are nothing but packaging
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by bassdow:
Left to me, just visit a couple of schools, get their scheme of work and syllabus, then employ services of 2 or 3 teachers to home school them.

And subjects should only include quality ones. Things such as IRK, CRK, etc; should be excluded make pikin brain focus
