Left to me, just visit a couple of schools, get their scheme of work and syllabus, then employ services of 2 or 3 teachers to home school them.
No one would insist you repeat buying same textBooks, and other unnecessary expenses.

Nairaland with pointless debates even in 2025. It seems we’ll see a resurgence of topics like manual washing vs washing machine, manual transmission vs automatic and fuel generators vs solar panels. Don’t forget the old faithful; the gourd in the village vs electric fridges.

The average mongrel here is the product of government schooling. It’s easy to know which form of education is superior. Nairaland youths can’t comprehend simple write-ups and are quick to display ignorance in threads.
I know 2 people that finished from community secondary school & graduated from university with first class.

I went to a government school, and the standard was top notch, so I don't know what you're on about.

There are whack private schools, and there good government schools, and vice versa.
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Originalsly:
It depends on the educators...the teachers. A public school usually has qualified trained teachers who know how to impart knowledge. Private schools usually employ anyone ... more like child care institutions. If we bear in mind Private School is a business and a business is about profit then we should know a child's education is not the priority. They both have their setbacks ...but as it is today ... in this country ... with the unregulated Private schools popping up everywhere .... in most cases I'll say it's not worth the expense. Pump half the money into your child's Public school classroom and I'm sure there will be a remarkable improvement in his work ... not Grades ...work. (Which Private school teacher would dare give a dunce Grade F? ...unless he wants to be fired.) If we should look at the brilliant minds we have produced over the yearsss ...about what percentage came out if private schools? ... that's something to chew on.

private is ok for basic education especially primary education, secondary and university level should be public, why because public institution build the student to be independent, private most time get things done for the pupils to appease the parent. government school no send your mama.

primary school the brain still need careful guidance that public schools wont give, most private secondary school run special center for their ssce exams
You are correct but they will not believe you.
Do you know most of them forced their teachers to write notes for the students and to ensure everyone pass for my customers

When it comes to post primary school in my state Anambra, just go for mission/government, and if you can't afford it then go for government, I don't see anything private schools offer that are not in government owned schools.

Is this OP about universities where students are expected to do four years before graduation? Or it is about primary and secondary schools?

It’s ironical that today’s middle class people who made it from free schools, are too dumb to understand how they are shortchanging themselves by paying the most taxes as a percentage of their income, while still paying for private schools. How can we overcome this suffering mindset of double jeopardy Stockholm syndrome huh

I think "Private" should be well defined.
I guess you mean Privately owned schools which are not government schools.
I have seen several privately owned schools that are worse off government schools especially Primary and Secondary schools...
Most teachers are not qualified.
A teacher who teaches in nursery class is also asked to teach secondary school pupils and a whole lots of mess.

Prolly you should call it "Classic Private schools" compared to Government schools 😂
And there are also "classic government schools". I attended one.
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by henrycloud: 12:54pm On Mar 03, 2025
The great ones, yes. The cheap ones, NO.

If you can afford the great ones, go on. If not, a sound public school will be better.

Infact, public school plus sound home lesson tutor, supported by strong discipline and nurturing at home will make kids do really well. Teach them to manage time. Teach to wake early, study even when their favourite show is on, to always speak well and never lie etc.

Then you as a parent go on to be the perfect example.
Re: Is Private School Worth The Cost? Let’s Discuss! by Nobody: 12:55pm On Mar 03, 2025
this doesn't even pass for any debate, people that sent their kids to public schools, if they can afford private school fees, do you think they will opt for public school...

any government owned institution/organization in Nigeria has no quality, and people are only going for it cox they can't afford private owned organization/institution...

Education is one of the biggest investments parents make for their children, and in Nigeria, the debate between private and public schools is always ongoing. Many parents believe that private schools offer better quality education, improved facilities, and a stronger academic foundation, but the high cost often raises the question: Is it really worth it?

Advantages of Private Schools
Smaller Class sizes: More attention for each student
Better Facilities: Access to modern classrooms, libraries, and tech tools
Quality Teachers: Some argue that private school teachers are more committed
Extracurricular Activities: Exposure to robotics, coding, arts, and sports
Parental Involvement: More structured communication with parents

Challenges of Private Schools
Expensive Tuition: Some schools charge millions per year
Not Always Better: Some private schools focus more on profit than education
Pressure on Kids: High expectations can sometimes stress students
Social Exposure: Less interaction with students from different backgrounds

The Public School Reality
Public schools, though more affordable, often face issues like overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and teacher shortages. However, some federal government colleges and top public schools still provide quality education.

What Do You Think?
Are private schools worth the cost in Nigeria?
Have you had a great experience with a public school?
Should the government do more to improve public education?
Let’s discuss! Drop your thoughts below! 👇🏽
in Nigeria yes private is d best. But outside d shores of Africa looking at Nigeria schools both are still graduate half bake Students. The private graduate educated illetrate that only know to speak good English only. No intellectual skills ND hand work skill

The solution is for govt to put a policy to force Nd transition all these public ND private school to adopt technical school curriculum

Then adopt vocational school as our third tertiary institution to meet university ND poly sit up.

Yes, but it depends on what you want to get out of private schools. Also, private schools na according to your pocket. Personally, with my knowledge and thoughts about pre-higher education, I'm a strong advocate of math based education. For that reason, I align more or prefer schools owned or managed by the Catholic Church. A good alternative will be Ambassadors College owned by Seun Osewa's family. The school is built on a strong math pedagogy. Basically any school that wholehea rtedly promotes strong math education.

Not so much of schools that promote their British curriculum or UK pedagogy educational offerings. The Brits aren't so good at math, even within Europe. That goes to the Swiss, Germans and French.
maths is not the problem. The issue is witchcraft mindset. A minset of shortcut. What is the point being excellent in maths and ending counting what you account for in a bank. Solving third and nth order polynomials but can't translate the skill into other fields?

Even in US private schools are sought after.

Even my parents had the funds, i would never have smelt any govt dungeon call school.

Most government school from primary to tertiary can hardly boast of good toilets.

They prefer to setup laterine.
Same school that teach the dangers of laterine.

There is no fun in poverty.

I know a man that the son and daughter finished at the Jesuit owned school in Lagos. The schools fees per session is close to N3.5m and he had two kids there then.

Those his two kids are very smart. I interacted with them whenever they were on vacation. Their forward thinking, attitude and characters are top notch. Both are first year University students in the US now.

I usually use them as role model for my kids.

Remember the network of friends your kids got to build when they attend top notch schools.

You didn't do enough research on this topic and like some of you always garrulous, just to get attention!
- Do you know what it takes to run a Business Organisation or an Enterprise,in Nigeria - where there is no single Financial Support from Govt- State or Federal Govt?
In most of the Private Schools, they provide everything - with them Money, Capital, Labour - some from their Savings, they used to Save the Schools.
- what about Un-trained Workers and when they finished the Training, they easily- Migrated to another Schools!
- Some of you complained that the Salaries in Private is Poor, but you easily forget that they don't have Govt Support or Subventions( Money) and that is why they are Private!
They have come to stay as they do well in most Exams than most Public Schools.
Same with Private Universities.

It's important to separate the rich from the poor as even God did not allow Solomon the king to live among the poor.

A rich child has no business interacting with a poor child as the poor child will negatively impact the rich child.

The government is the cause for not funding the public education. In comparison just ask yourself in recent years what is your opinion about academic performance and good moral uprightness of students from public institutions to those of public? Am sure you know those of the private are far better. So what are we trying to say? Until the government starts giving adequate attention to education the private sector will still hold sware. No two ways about it.

Forget that.
We met such people(whose parents wasted so much money training in expensive secondary schools) at the university and still beat them academically
Some of them even relied on those of us who attended public secondary schools for their survival.
It's all about personal motivation ànd determination.
Only kids who are not naturally bright should be sent to such expensive schools to help bring them up to an average level.

Reading through this entire thread, I can see we're all concerned about giving our children the BEST education possible. But what both private and public schools often miss is teaching the MOST VALUABLE SKILL for the future - CODING!
While schools debate outdated curricula, the global economy is RAPIDLY changing. The highest-paying jobs today require tech skills that most Nigerian schools (even some expensive private ones) simply don't teach effectively.

I run specialized CODING CLASSES FOR KIDS (ages 8-12) that will give your child what regular schools can't:
STRUCTURED CURRICULUM: Carefully designed lessons that build real skills step-by-step
HANDS-ON PROJECTS: Children create their own games and animations (not just theory!)
FUTURE PROOF SKILLS: Programming knowledge that opens doors to global opportunities
A FREE DEMO CLASS: See the difference before committing

The child who can code will have opportunities your generation never imagined. Don't let your child be left behind while others move forward.

Limited spots available for our upcoming session. WhatsApp ONLY: 08178443675

Give your child a future you never had – start their tech journey today!

Was watching a school competition on tv yesterday u need to see how unilag was dusting bells and futa. Unilag score was at 42 while bells was 14 followed but futa at -4 i think. Is unilag not supposed to be government owned? The girl from futa couldn’t ans one question but the unilag guy answered most technically mathematical questions that i was really impressed. Imagine bells that is one of the most expensive universities after igbenedion university. Smh
