FG’s agricultural imports policy ‘suicidal’ — Group

The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has criticized the Federal Government’s continued importation of subsidized foreign agricultural commodities, warning that the policy is crippling Nigeria’s agro-industry, discouraging investment, and pushing the country toward food insecurity.

In a statement by the executive director of the group, Mallam Abdulrazaq Hamzat, he condemned the government’s approach, describing it as suicidal.

While the government celebrates the decline in food prices, the group argued that the trend is artificial and dangerous, driven by cheap foreign imports subsidized by other nations, a move it said undermined Nigerian farmers and threatens national economic stability.

“It is shocking that while other nations subsidize their agricultural industries to create jobs and sustain food production, Nigeria is doing the opposite, importing cheap food to destroy its own agriculture. This is a suicidal economic policy that must stop immediately”, he said

“The real victory is achieving food sufficiency through strong local production, not artificially low prices from foreign imports. If this policy continues, Nigerian agriculture will be permanently crippled, and the country will become entirely dependent on foreign nations for survival”.

We are too wicked in this country, a pal in taraba told me how farmers were balling. I know middle men(worse) who have made fortunes on sales of rice, beans and corn. Our beef and chicken is too expensive.

We need the imports oOoOO, see as Dangote refinery is giving importers hot hot 🥵🔥💥💣💯. That's the only way to get true value for goods and services. It's only in Nigeria that economic principles are defied 😕

You guys are mad, Nigerian farmers are some of the most useless and heartless humans on earth. With all the both financial and other wise supports Buhari gave to Nigerian farmers, including the popular anchor borrowers scheme, instead of prices of locally produced foods to be going down, Nigerian farmers increases their prices.
Even here in Benin city, cassava is grown in large quantities in Ehor and from there it's turned to garri, a line of garri is sold for 8k... Something that shouldn't be more than 3k.
Infact, the FG should open the borders to the importation of all Agri products so that Nigerian farmers will have sense.
Imagine the FG had listened to Dangote and ban the importation of petroleum products, do you guys think Dangote would be bringing down his prices? Dangote brings his prices down because the landing cost for imported petroleum products became cheaper that his own.
Let the FG also allows the importation of cement and let's see if cement won't crash to like 5-7k

Hmmmm useless ppl,by god grace poor men will buy food stuff at affordable prices
Re: Nigeria’s Agricultural Imports Policy Is Suicidal by EponObi(f):
That organization dey craze. What useless subsidy are they talking about?

The one wey Buhari gave massively for the local rice policy, what was the outcome? Didn't our local rice farmers export the output to neighboring countries while low supply continued inflating price of rice here. Imagine that nonsense. The Nigeria state rolled out N300 billions, eventually to over 4 millions farmers. Nigeria didn't reap any benefit. N300b down the drain, but outsiders enjoyed our rice at very good price.

F*uck dem local farmers. Greedy mofos. No be dem also hoarded local produce the last two years to artificially drive up price at the detriments of the citizens, because *Tinubu removed fuel subsidy* grin Everyone was greedily inflating price left and right to form street smart not knowing it will boomerang and everyone of us go collect. Now we don collect, eyes don open.

Sometimes when we criticize the government, we should look into the mirror too.

The people can't and won't continue to battle hunger because the country wants to develop the local agriculture industry. What the f are we developing when N300b + 4 millions farmers couldn't solve anything as simple as making their outputs available in the market?

The importation will continue until everyone of us is ready to be serious. Tinubu got this right. Abeg treat them mofo like Dnagote: Bring in imported food items at cheaper cost, let the local producers compete. Their fada! Days of overpampering is over.

Re: Nigeria’s Agricultural Imports Policy Is Suicidal by epainos:
The challenge here is that Nigerians are greedy. Government does not want to get involved in the Agric business, but empowers farmers. But you see those middle men, traders, and retailers are too greedy. They will keep moving prices up to make more money. The only way government can check them is to import food and other things to crash prices. It did not start today. General Muritala and General Segun Obasanjo did the same when they ruled. That was when area boys aren't around. Those retailers and middlemen kept moving prices of fish up. Those guys went to Norway and imported massive fish. Within a week, the price went down. And they asked traders....did they lose when selling at the new crashed price? Of course not. Farmers, middle men, and even retailers always get incentives from government, but they will never allow those bonuses reflex in their prices. Rather, they will keep moving prices up to make more money. That's why they have associations. Those association leaders will not want to do anything but always finding ways to make traders, retailers pay fees, and they encourage them to move prices up. Those retailers too saw the opportunity, and they over do it. When traders started making more, the association demands more too.

Now, if govt decides to ban the associations, they will start rioting. If they don't riot, area boys will disturb markets. If they don't disturb them, traders will start stealing from each other, and they will disorganise everywhere. Nigerians behave like animals generally.

Look at the cement price of today. Govt has assisted cement producers and with the CBN interventions, they are relieved. Yet, those guys including dangote has refused to moved down the price. Work and house minister had to call them out last week to move the price of cement from over N9k to N7k. So, you can see the real Nigerian producers, distributors, marketers, and retailers. They are all greedy.

So, the Nigerian problem is too complex. It can be solved when we are truly ready to sort out everything. Like I always say, the military guys destroyed Nigeria finally. IBB and Abacha did the greatest damages to Nigeria.

Wicked people.

Fg should import food since some farmers have decided to remain greedy.

The agricultural sector needs a total overhaul from unguarded subsidies to roundtripping of fertilisers, to market-determined inputs, book haram killing farmers and illegal exports to other African countries. The sector needs thorough dissecting. BAT should look again.

Re: Nigeria’s Agricultural Imports Policy Is Suicidal by donself9:
Since Nigeria has refuse to be compatable with standard economy policies then we might as well adjust to remodelling base on local pecularity

Buhari gave the head away for agricultural development, almost 10yrs downline no significant growth no gain, same stories and excuses from farmers while people are suffering, local rice is more expensive than quality foreign rice undecided whats the point

insecurity might be a challenge, but our farmers and middlemen are not sincere, what we see is conniving and exploiting poor Nigerians

If our farmers and local traders can cite the dollar as an excuse to hike prices, then we might as well move to importation,
Re: Nigeria’s Agricultural Imports Policy Is Suicidal by Love800(m): 7:35am On Mar 04, 2025
But the local ones are not cheap na. So we need the import.

And who told them that other countries don't import too!

Normally, nigeria leaders are all useless. We suppose to be exporting raw and process goods since the birth of nigeria. So what are the leaders doing since 1960!

It's sad how people analyse situations and policies from just a point of view. For years now, our farmers have been finding it difficult to meet the population demand of agricultural produce reason not far from; insecurity, herder's invasion of farmlands, climate change etc.
Our farmers are faced with the challenge of insecurity whereby the agendist Fulani tribes/machineries have been kidnapping them, collecting ransom, rapping their wives and female children, killing unfortunate ones.
They also usually experience invasion of their farmlands by these herders with their livestock to graze on crops planted to be harvested. All these challenges has caused scarcity and hike in price of the little food available. The government decides to throw the borders open for importation of food to help cushion the effect and you are here condemning it instead of gratitude to the government.
Please let's be reasonable.

When we talk, they say farmers are greedy.

They claim farmers are cashing out big, but they themselves don't want to go into the farming

It's a very bad policy and farmers are already counting out their loses

We supported the Government and agree that they should stop importing Rice and support local production but alas Local Rice is already 80k/50kg.

Well, if Demand will cost our local producers to increase Price anyhow, then let the FG allow importation.

Dangote is trying to frustrate Petrol import but Cement he has never reduce the Price.
Re: Nigeria’s Agricultural Imports Policy Is Suicidal by ribbit: 7:45am On Mar 04, 2025
Another northern group is crying about the import policy.

Buhari blocked all food importation at the borders for 8 years (8 good years, o).
He invested heavily in agriculture.

But what did we get in return? Food inflation at an unprecedented level because the greedy farmers and middle men would rather sell at the same price as smuggled food.

Local rice and beans is almost the same price as the ones smuggled through benin Republic.

They would rather export their farm produce to gain illicit dollars than sell food cheaper to Nigerians.

So what do they want the president to do? He should continue to allow Nigerians to suffer food inflation because they want to make more money?

Fvck you,
fvck this group saying nonsense,
And Bleep every individual that would watch Nigerians suffer just so they can make illicit profits.

These goats, under Buhari, after using over a trillion bucks to support farming, kidnapped the produce and called it blockafe because hausas were disciplined in Lagos.
Under Tinubu, Yorubas have been attacked in Karuna yet no southerner dare block a truck or tannker taking goods to northern Nigeria. Animals.
