‘Buy land again,’ AY questions Nigerians’ cycle of selling lands to relocate, then repurchasing

Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has shared his perspective on the trend of Nigerians relocating abroad in pursuit of better opportunities.

AY pointed out that many Nigerians sell their properties at home to move overseas, hoping for a more stable and prosperous life.

However, upon arrival, he noted, they often find themselves juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet while adjusting to the challenges of a new environment.

He then highlighted that many of these individuals eventually send money back to Nigeria to buy land—essentially repeating the same cycle.

Reflecting on this pattern, AY posed a question to his followers, seeking insight into what he described as a recurring experience for many Nigerians.

He wrote: “Nigerians abroad are working so hard doing multiple jobs to buy land back home, while Nigerians back home are selling their lands to relocate abroad so they can do 3 jobs to buy land again in Nigeria. Please explain to me what type of cycle is this?”

Many people are working a$$ out and killing their health to make money to buy properties in Nigeria, where u spend jus 1 month or max 2 all year round and u stressing ursef here rest of MONTH to make money and Send to where you don't LEAVE, a QUICK QUESTION; are your Children u raising here interested in going back to 9ja to inherit when you are GONE?

One can INVEST here, yes you can't pass to your wards to inherit tho (Direct inheritance is not automatic unlike Nigeria, becos they have to pay Inheritance Tax like £50k - £100k) but there are better ways to leave PROPERTIES to your wards, which is "TRUST" ( it's a wisdom profitable way, by opening a company and purchase properties , it saves u from partner who also want to part away with your properties and any of your lineage will be in charge of these properties with out the pay of INHERITANCETAX ).

Stupid question. Just like asking someone why they sold their land to start up a business. How long do we have to pretend that traveling abroad is not a vacation or tourism for an average Nigerian, but business ? I sold Lexus Rx350 and muscle Camry to complete my family japa to UK, not even US or Canada, but car is no longer my problem today… I look forward to something bigger.

I have better work life balance here in England than I had in Nigeria, better than my peers in Nigeria and I earn way better.

Land in Nigeria has no little or no value. Still looking to sell the ones I left behind before they steal them.
