When it comes to migration, there are always trade-offs that aren’t immediately visible but over time they become clear. I am doing well in Chile. I have my car, a great job, and a comfortable life. I can go anywhere I want and wear designer clothes. This country has given me the kind of life I could only dream of when I was in Nigeria. But I miss my family. Back home I lived with my parents and saw them every day, sharing conversations and laughter. Here I only get to talk to my mom in the mornings and that is it. I know I am more useful to my family here than I would be in Nigeria but sometimes I wish I could have it both ways.

I was a mechanic for a while in Nigeria and even took some driving lessons, but I never took it seriously because I never expected to own a car in my life. Back then, I could have bought a car with my tech job, but I didn’t want to. All I could think about was how to escape Nigeria.

Life is funny. I remember going to the gym in Nigeria where the guys with 2009 Lexus and co. were the ones women flocked around. Meanwhile, those of us without a car? Nobody even looked our way.
