So I was in the market today to get some drugs. The pharmacist who was supposed to attend to me, a Christian lady, got talking to someone else and I overheard her say, "Don't worry, our own fast would start soon. On March 5th"

Those are not her words verbatim, but she said something very close.

This is certainly not the first or the second time I have heard Christians talk like this. A while ago, two or three weeks back, I got talking with a Roman Catholic commercial motorcyclist and he talked about "Lent" and how Christians are required to fast the duration, in the presence of other commercial motorcycle riders who are Muslims.

I have to say this: There is no mandatory Fast for the Christian faithful. If you have a hard time understanding English, I would say it quite plainly again: We are not required to fast as a matter of command. There is NO Compulsory Fasting in the Christian faith.

What we have is a voluntary fast. The Christian who wants to bring himself to the Lord's attention, or who wants to enjoy deeper fellowship and communion with God, or who wants the Lord to continue his great work in him, or who wants to just deny himself before his God, not for anything in particular, or for some special favours (or request) would find himself regularly drafting mental timetable, again and again, for when he would fast and when he would break his fast. It is entirely up to him. At a point in his Christian walk, he would find himself fasting quite regularly. VOLUNTARILY!


The Christian Fast is not a Fast that is necessitated by a divine command.

The Jews of old only fast once in a year on the Day of Atonement when offerings of purification were made for them. On that Day, the scapegoat (the origin of the word) takes the sins of the people into the wilderness through an elaborate ritual practice. That is the only time we would have been required to Fast as a command had Christ not come, but praise God, thanks be to God, the perfect atonement has been made and God has accepted it. We would not have to fast once a year as mandated in the law and certainly not thirty days or less in a given calendar year.

Many Christians do not know, or at least the nominal ones. We have all being there, passed through that.

While I do not agree that your label should be used of these Christians; it seems many want to put up a defense albeit ignorantly before the Muslims who ask why they are not Fasting or when they are required to Fast. .

Because the only reason why Muslims are fasting is because their prophet read about it in the Bible and he felt his religion won't meet the criteria if fasting is not inclusive but first we need to ask ourselves:

Fasting is an act of worship where the observer denies himself of needs or bodily necessities to seek communion with God, or to get his attention. Some would say that there are different kinds of fast, fasting from this-and-that, yes, while true, any fast that does not deny one's self of food and water is not properly a fast.

I do not think Muhammad is requiring his followers to Fast because he read about it in the bible. According to him, the Muslim should fast because the Quran was revealed in this month. His claims of getting divine revelation from Yahweh or one of his angels, Gabriel, though, is a well-crafted devil's lie, but it is still a claim anyway.
