The Significance Of Ash Wednesday in the Christian faith by Nobody: 1:13am On Mar 04, 2019
Each year, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration. The 40-day period represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him. Lent asks believers to set aside a time each year for similar fasting, marking an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.

Who Celebrates Ash Wednesday?

Have you ever noticed how once a year, usually in February or March, there are a lot of people walking around with an ash cross on their foreheads? You probably knew it had something to do with Lent, but you weren’t sure why the ash cross was significant.
Or maybe, you grew up in a Catholic or Protestant church that held Ash Wednesday services each year, and so you’re already familiar with the service, but aren’t too sure about the history of Ash Wednesday and Lent, and what they have to do with the Christian faith. If you want to learn more about this important day in the liturgical calendar and why so many celebrate Ash Wednesday and Lent, read on!
Often called the Day of Ashes, Ash Wednesday starts Lent by focusing the Christian’s heart on repentance and prayer, usually through personal and communal confession. This happens during a special Ash Wednesday service. 2019 Ash Wednesday is on the 6th of March 2019 mostly likely this Wednesday.

What is the Meaning of Ash Wednesday and What Happens?
During Mass (for Catholics) or worship service (for Protestants), the priest or pastor will usually share a sermon that is penitential and reflective in nature. The mood is solemn - many services will have long periods of silence and worshipers will often leave the service in silence.
Usually, there is a responsive passage of Scripture, usually centered around confession, read aloud about the leader and congregation. Attendees will experience communal confession, as well as moments where they are prompted to silently confess sins and pray.
After all of this, the congregation will be invited to receive the ashes on their foreheads. Usually, as the priest or pastor will dip his finger into the ashes, spread them in a cross pattern on the forehead, and say, “From dust you came and from dust you will return.”

Where do the Ashes Come from and What do the Ashes Symbolize?
In many congregations, the ashes are prepared by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday, churches bless and hand out palm branches to attendees, a reference to the Gospels’ account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when onlookers lay palm branches on his path.
The ashes of this holiday symbolize two main things: death and repentance. “Ashes are equivalent to dust, and human flesh is composed of dust or clay (Genesis 2:7), and when a human corpse decomposes, it returns to dust or ash.”
“When we come forward to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, we are saying that we are sorry for our sins, and that we want to use the season of Lent to correct our faults, purify our hearts, control our desires and grow in holiness so we will be prepared to celebrate Easter with great joy”
Other things to look for is Psalm Sunday,Maundy Thursday( Commemorates the foot washing and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles), Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.
2019 ash Wednesday falls on the 6th of March 2019. Other activities line for the Christian calendar include
Mothering Sunday which would be celebrated on the 31st of March 2019. The fourth Sunday in Lent. This is celebrated by Anglicans, Presbyterian and Methodist. This years' celebration of triumphant entry of our Lord Jesus is April 14th 2019( Psalm Sunday). This ushers us to Maundy Thursday ( washing of feet as demonstrated by our Lord Jesus in John 13:1–17). Good Friday is April 19 2019 while Easter Sunday April 21 2019. During this period of lent which is 40 days, many Christians will reflect on the dead and resurrection of our Lord Jesus as well as his coming in glory.
Have a wonderful holy week.

The significance of the ash is to remind us from dust we came, to dust we shall return.

We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again. Indeed Christ will come again to judge the living and the death. Dear brethren as we reflect on the dead and resurrection of our Lord Jesus we should note that death can come anytime. When you die be ready to face your maker

We are reminded the stress Christ passed through to win us salvation...

We are supposed to be brought down to earth by that knowledge.

We are dust and dust we shall return.

We are nothing without Christ

There is a reason for the quote. I quoted myself not you or anyone. Yes mortal men including you and me are dust and to dust we share return. Dust to dust ashes to ashes.

Catholics,Anglicans, methodists and Presbyterian observe lent as a period of sober reflection on the love of Christ towards us and constantly reminding ourselves from DUST we came, and from DUST we will return. Hence the significance of Ash Wednesday.

During this period, we help the needy, this is just an earthly way of showing the Love of Christ, through Compassion for our fellow humans.

In confirmation we are taught if we dont love our neighbour who we see daily, how much be it God who we haven't seen? Ash Wednesday also reminds us we are dust, and dust would we return.

Finally but not the least as the list is long, to show our love for Christ, we deprive ourselves from things we love. The bible says we are slaves to that which controls us. This period helps addicts to stop habits like drinking, drugs and the likes because is a period of fasting, humility and reflection. Most importantly, reading the word of God.

I hope I was able to clarify the significance of Lent. I find it cowardice for other churches to condemn lent, but celebrate Easter. If you cant suffer with Christ, you want to enjoy with him by eating Chicken on Easter day, yet you cant go through the biblical 40days he fasted in the bible, yet you ask where LENT IS IN THE BIBLE , BUT NOT EASTER? HYPOCRITES. WE LIVE AND DIE IN CHRIST, AS THAT IS OUR GAIN.
