ProverbBaelish:
Only 4 films deserved best picture nominations there compared to the movies that came out this year
Dune Part Two
I'm still here
The Substance
The Brutalist

The movies that were totally snubbed
Nosferatu
A Different Man
Ghostlight
All we imagine as light
Flow
Furiosa
Where did you see All We Imagine As Light and I'm Still Here to watch??

I've been looking for those movies to watch and The Secret of A Sacred Fig.

For me I don't buy the FLOW hype. THE WILD ROBOT is a decidedly better movie for me— in many aspects. I just feel this is the Academy trying to look original especially with it being from an Indie studio. Especially judging from their very shitty nominations and wins this year. It's a win that win probably placate millions and draw peeps to their side.... claiming cinema WON.

From telegram bro - the guy who owns the channel has an apple tv subscription - that's really the only way you can watch it without the cinema!
I enjoyed flow more because of how original it is especially in the animation industry 🤷🏾‍♂️ movies are not chosen just because of how entertaining it's if it was just that, Deadpool will win the best picture. Just my opinion tho

As soon as I saw one article whether it's from THR or Variety I can't remember tipping him to win the Best Director award even ahead of Edward Berger and stating their reasons I knew it was over and this year's Oscars would probably go on as one of the most hated.

Apparently, Sean Baker has many Hollywood friends and true to form, Hollywood voters mostly vote who they like FIRST.

Despite really enjoying the film, I no see wetin the guy do to warrant a Best Picture nod or even director at that. 🤷🏽‍♂️
We were too focused on EMILIA PEREZ we didn't know ANORA took momentum.

Well, just like I predicted, I already said it that Demi Moore was NOT winning any award for The Substance work. I don first tell Una say Academy no send horror. Due to the universal acclaim, just like I predicted it got nominations but no MAJOR awards.

CBM was a brutal fight for concessions and the massive fandom with the genre to even win any major awards from that group, but you see this horror genre— na here dem go die put.
Sean Baker na industry plant o. Emilia Pèrez was truly set for a clean sweep bro before Karla Sofía Gascón hit self destruct, Anora was the next obvious choice and NEON went on an insane campaign for it!, and those decisions were last minute, and the wins doesn't look organic, absolutely no way Mikey Madison performance was better than Demi Moore's, it doesn't even make sense but it is what it is.

We have established here, that certain genre will never be considered for Oscars on a serious level, except the movie was overwhelmingly good. Heath Ledger winning as "The Joker" was even surprising tbf, and i can't shake this uncanny feeling that they awarded him cuz emotional guilt with him passing away.

Bro, actually happy NEON are getting this win tho, i like what the studio are doing lately with Indie and arthouse flicks, it's like what A24 was doing when they first started out, and what made us love them, their distribution is top notch, unlike A24 lately.

Nickel Boys......7/10

Being one of the few watches I quickly snagged before the Academy Award proper.... I'd say this is not as earlier hyped by award season as one of the Best Films of the year.

It's a good movie but its incredibly niche and I somewhat feel a major reason this was included as Best Picture and in awards chat is mainly because of the racism topic and the political undertones.

It's a brutal tale into the systemic racism happening in an American reformatory school in Southern USA Jim Crow era.
I didn't really like it's excessive use of POV cinematography. Sure, it's a narrative choice prolly to drive the suspense but it's overuse left a sour taste in my mouth.

It's what I'd say the perfect awards bait.

Was it good? Yes. Is it Best Picture quality? I'd say no. Would easily have replaced it with NOSFERATU.
Omooo i heard people complaining about the POV style cinematography and I just refused to take the bait....was it that distracting?

I wasn't even aware of the complaints sef, but bruh that POV Cinematography was excessive and beginning to become an annoyance at some point.
Most of the shots were shaky like it was shot on hand-held and after a long while it becomes stressful to the eyes.

Darn too distracting you always felt it was there. The film made me dose off in the first 30mins sef, darn too slow. And the storytelling style was too niche, like they were going for auteuristic shit.

Yeah, it's so obvious. Karla Sofia Gascon destroyed the initial plans.

A24 almost got fvvked as a studio after many risky projects that didn't make bank in 2023 especially that Joaquin Phoenix movie — Beau is Afraid. The studio spent their record budget on it at the time and incurred massive losses. And now they're gearing towards making more crowd pleasers.

On NEON, they're in imperious form and now have two Best Picture winners in the last 5 years. I always forget they're the one who distributed Parasite. The studio is hard to bet against this past few years, although many of their movies were acquired during film festivals; their distribution and Awards campaign is unparalleled presently. They have an uncanny eye for picking out these films.

I also like how they're making their presence felt recently, many people don't know NEON have been the Cannes Palme d'Or winner for the last 5 years back to back.

Yeah well it ain't looking rosy at WB and anyone would definitely be alarmed by what Pam and Mike have commissioned for upcoming films this year.

Spending $90mn on Ryan Coogler's SINNERS

A massive $130mn on a Paul Thomas Anderson film

Over $80mn for Maggie Gyllynhaal THE BRIDE

ALSO $80mn for Bong Jo Ho's MICKEY17

These are all truly risky pics especially PTA's film. It's wait and see how these films pan out.

The Brutalist.......9/10

This is what we call artistry.
For all the talk and brouhaha few weeks ago about the movie's use of AI to fine-tune the accent of
Adrien Brody's Hungarian, he did mighty well and doesn't subtract from the beauty of his performance — especially for just AI edited work of less than 5 mins out of a 3hr30mins plus movie.

For all the talk about its humongous runtime I hardly felt it once I fully tuned in to the story around the 20th minute.

Like the movie title suggests, it's a Brutal take on the life of a struggling Jewish immigrant after surviving the horrors of the Holocaust. László Tóth is a disturbed man with the Nazi prosecution still haunting him, trying to make do with the hand life dealt him. Talented architect, good at what he does, life still finds a way to mess him up just while it seems like there's light at the end of the tunnel and glimmer of hope. It's a deep depressing tale, honestly. Seeing one rise and fall constantly and with each fall harder than the last.....it's heart wrenching.
It's a well grounded story about human complexity and relationships.

Guy Pearce did a fine job portraying hawkish, self absorbed millionaire Van Buren. Really played the narcissism to a tee.

Felicity Jones was hard done by the Academy and various award bodies for not getting a win at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress. Top tier acting, which makes it all the more infuriating for a weak performance from Zoe Saldana to win. She was the lifeblood of hope in the second half of the movie while Brody's character was spiralling into depression and our of control.

I loved the cinematography, the visuals, the look and feel, the acting was top tier and the director Brady Corbet just got himself on my radar. Top tier writing and storytelling. A slowburn which is best consumed if you got a whole lot of time and you're a fan of story building and rich dialogue.

Truly, one of the Best Films of 2024 and deserved the nomination no doubt....if this had won over ANORA asides from the obvious Best Picture in DUNE PART TWO or CONCLAVE, it would have been better. Or even THE SUBSTANCE.
Alas, the second weakest movie in the lineup won.

I'm hoping and praying Brody gets more bigger movies and roles outside this just to see the negative people who are unnecessarily triggered by him CRY. People are just painfully emotional for no reason. And this same people with faux rage are the ones who's going to line up tickets in hand for unoriginal spiritless Disney movies in troops.

Re-adapting one of the Greatest movies of all time and one of the key films to make me fall in love with 50's, 60's and earlier 20th Century movies; it's really a tall order.

But the man has a great track record....so fingers crossed.

Lust, Caution (2007)

The erôtic scenes in this movie were very explicit...

Synopsis:
Lust, Caution is set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when the city was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and ruled by the puppet government led by Wang Jingwei. The film depicts a group of Chinese university students from the University of Hong Kong who plot to eliminate a high-ranking special agent and recruiter working for the puppet government by luring him into a honey trap. The film is generally accepted to be based on the historical event of Chinese spy Zheng Pingru

It seems the sèx scenes were real. But not confirmed yet

The actress was banned in the Chinese movie industry after the movie...

The scene was captured in a room with only the two actors and a single member of the crew... (Suspicious)

Blu-rays showed condoms and "the credits of the NC-17 version of the film, released in the USA, include an 18 USA § 2257 notice. This is normally only used for pornography or other films including actual intercourse."

James Watkins, Mike Flanagan and now Marino?
The way James Gunn has attracted top talent into DC projects needs to be talked about. A darn good job he's doing so far.

The incredible toxicity on Twitter these days is just WILD. Some people just make it their personality.

Very ironic judging from the fact many actors would kill to have the career of Zoe Saldana right now. Like she's a star in like 4 out of the 5 highest grossing movies of all time. And an Oscar to boot.😤
So what pipe are these grifters smoking online? 🙄

Man, I just need Adrien Brody in Chris Nolan or Denis Villeneuve, or a Robert Eggers movie real bad.

Kieran Culkin doesn't even seem like the one to make big inroads in Hollywood. Dude just loves Kieran Culkin roles. And I feel he doesn't really care enough for the blockbusters.

Mikey Madison will be rushed for now, but let's wait and see....... we've had Alicia Vikander. 👀

The substance.

Not a fan of any sort of horror but I watched this in morbid fascination and disgust.

Still I couldn't stop watching. Like seeing a snake swallow live prey it's horrifying yet you can't but look.

Abdul would have got some eye candy on this one .

All in all I see why the movie made raves it's very good.

9/10 still disgusted

The Substance :8/10

Oddly scary, These two words aptly describes this movie. The Substance is one of those films that sticks with you long after the credits roll. It’s not just scary in the usual way—it’s oddly unsettling and disturbing, you know, the kind of horror that creeps up on you. The mix of brutal body horror and deep social commentary makes it feel disturbingly real. It’s gory, yes, but what really gets under your skin is the way it plays with identity, control, and society’s obsession with youth.
