Blazetrailer:
Wrong. Former NNPC was owned 100% by Nigerians via the Federal government. NNPC in turn held a majority stake in all oil JVs on behalf of Nigerians

Current NNPCL is still a government linked company(google GLC) established via an act of parliament. In a way it is still owned by the Nigerian public represented by the FG as a majority shareholder, much like Crown Corporations in UK/Canada and Government partnership enterprises in the US.

Just a a point of correction. I agree with you though,on the less than transparent approach of the PIB and the obvious shenanigans surrounding it.

The only way I see transport fares actually coming down is when the petrol starts selling for #500 per liter.
Otherwise this reduction thing we are getting is more or less not an economic time but a market strategy during this religious period of Ramadan.

We will soon know how how long it will last ...

I am not into transport business and I do make use of commercial transits,
But to be sincere the price is still insignificant to enable transport owner cut down price now.
Moreover this is Nigeria, price can still shoot up any time.

Nah bro...don't act like this. You are denigrating yourself.

Your response is devoid of any intellectual connections. Besides, you dont need to study economics to know what is correct and in public space. Simply doing a basic research before coming to spout incorrectness online is a common virtue.....it could make a primary school drop out correct a college professor online.

FYI, i did not only study Economics, I taught developmetal economics/geopolitics as a graduate assistant in diaspora in my early days. I never thought it was necessary to state that until you brought that angle in.

Road transport operators in Nigeria have ruled out the possibility of reducing transport fares as a result of the further cut in the prices of petrol by Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Some of the transporters and leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) told LEADERSHIP Weekend that they would not reduce the fares because of the high cost of vehicle maintenance and other related expenses.

In their competition for a fair share of the market, Dangote Refinery and NNPCL recently reduced the pump price of a litre of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to N825 and N860 respectively.

When LEADERSHIP Weekend asked some transporters in Kano whether they would reduce fares because of the lower fuel prices, the organising secretary of NURTW, Yushu’a Haruna, said the union had no plans to reduce transport fares because of the reduction of PMS pump price at some filling stations.

He said the reduction in fuel price was very insignificant to push for a cut in transport fares as they still battle to replace or buy spare parts at exorbitant rates.

His National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) counterpart, Ado Inuwa Yakasai, admitted that both Dangote and NNPCL have reduced the prices of fuel per litre but the prices of a new car and spare parts were still on the high side.

He said some years ago, spare parts such as a new tyre cost between N15,000 and N20,000 but sells for N68,000 or more while an engine of a Sharon car is about N1.5 million, which is very expensive for individuals who acquired vehicles on hire purchase basis to cope with.

They both lamented the long queues at the fuel stations where the prices are reduced which most times they are not ready to join in order to meet up with their schedule of trips.

Yakasai said under such conditions, they have no option than buying from fuel stations with higher pump prices. According to them, the only way to reduce fares is when there is a significant reduction in fuel price and the cost of spare parts.

A passenger at the Kano Line bus stop, Dr Aminu Galandanchi, lamented that despite the reduction of fuel price, it had not been reflected on fares which is the natural thing to do.

In Lagos State, the reduction in the price of PMS has not translated to a reduction in transport fares.

Does these idiots know what price slash means?
Re: Fuel Price Slash: We Won’t Reduce Fares – Transporters by hotseat: 9:59pm On Mar 08, 2025
To say that some unpatriotic Nigerians would want the current hyperinflation to continue without abatement would be an understatement.

The transporter companies in the SE have commendably held the light for others to follow by demonstrating love for country and compatriots.

The argument about cost of spart parts, tyres, vehicle servicing, etc remaining high is a lame excuse with the intent to continue profiteering while Nigerians suffer.

If transporters in the SE could review prices downward, it's expected that others would follow suit.

Greed so deep that they forgot that their number 1 excuse for over 2years is fuel don cost

Now it is going down and they're so loud and chest beating that as that fuel don dey go down, they're uninterested in slashing prices. They're so so heartless that the drop from 1190 to between 830 and 900(almost 300 drop) is what they're calling "too insignificant"
But if it went from 250 to 570, all their so called spare part prices also increase with the same sorry tale of fuel don cost

Isokay. Makes one wonder what exactly is all these political positions for if they can't help the masses, but suddenly feel too equipped if the masses wants to protest.

Nigeria should simply be handed over to China, the UK or US for recolonization because it's very shameful that after over 60 years of independence from the UK,we are still struggling with proper self governance, sense of patriotism and empathy towards one another.
Instead of seeking ways cooperatively to grow the country,we rather try to make life difficult economically and otherwise for one another.
Everyone tries to thrive at the detriment of the other person.

I believe when the fuel is reduced, transporters will also do same. What stop them from reducing the fuel to #500?

untill fuel hits N300 per litre I don't think any significant impact will be felt in the economy at large.
I know Tinubu met fuel at ₦200 and shot it to over 1k.

However, do you also realise that 1k to 860 is almost a 15 (FIFTEEN) percent drop?

And you're saying there is/should be no significant impact on producers?!!

Using GiG as example, if their fuel bill was ₦100million/month, it should be down to about ₦86million/month.

Cost reductions of ₦14million/month or ₦168million annually, for one company on a single line item. Yet "no savings to pass to consumers"!

₦50million of the above annual figure applied to price reductions to be more customer friendly go kee dem?!!

Truly, Nigeria and Nigerians have a numbers problem if it's not clear that we profiteer ourselves to death!!

Govt zombies and shit eaters claim Dollar is 1430. So why is customs not reducing its rate to 1430. But you expect drivers to reduce price
Even if customs reduce their exchange rate benchmark, what the other levies they introduced since this regime came on board? Remember that they recently increased their tariffs by 15%.

Some people erroneously think that it is about only the fuel. They do not know that there have been more duties and 15% Increase in customs' tariffs.

Nigerians, continue to dey do una self and then be shouting Tinubu. Same with food retailers, they don't want to bring down prices despite prices coming down. This country enh. And they will not hesitate to immediately increase their price if there's a little increase but to bring it down, na wahala.
Greed runs in our vein, they won't like to reduce their prices but they will like others to reduce their prices. Greedy generation

This is where the government comes in,in socialist countries and economies like China, the transport union will not dare utter this nonsense that he said,it is the same thing goods sellers are also saying, the government just allows this greedy unions to do whatever they want and like without any repercussions at all.
Re: Fuel Price Slash: We Won’t Reduce Fares – Transporters by chatinent: 8:57am On Mar 09, 2025
Instead of people to attack the govt hiking prices, they are attacking the transporters because a little difference of ₦25 was made. Fuel was ₦185/litre when you used to pay the old fare! It's almost ₦900/litre now and you want them to charge you the old fare? Even he corrupt police men on the road don't take less than ₦200 per checkpoints from the transporters! So how much did you pay again?

Blame the govt!

So I imagine I am a commercial driver. The engine oil I used for my car used to be about ₦12k before, now it's ₦23k. Fuel was increased from ₦185/litre to ₦400/litre, then to ₦900/litre. I can't call my mechanic and talk for long because my airtime finishes faster these days...not to talk of the indirect taxes of fast meals and mamaput delicacies the govt have put on those raw materials used in cooking!

Then you say I should keep charging you ₦50.. because it's the old fee? When I am paying new taxes?

Y'all talk about fuel alone! Do you know how much of taxes (both direct and indirect) was out into minor things like Maggie, Indomie, Oil, Bulb, Cement, clothes, shoes etc.?

If you know, you'll know you have a wicked govt! But you only concentrate on fuel! Because that's the only one you know!

Frankly,I won't blame the transporters, there are lots of abnormalities in this country, dangote refinery has the capacity to meet Nigeria's domestic fuel needs n much more, ordinarily the federal government should have been in a hurry to help dangote refinery to be operating at full capacity n completely flush out fuel imports n also help the naira to appreciate strongly against international currencies so as help drive down the prices of imports but what have we seen, all sort of hurdles were place in the path of dangote refinery, dangote had to fight a bitter battle to succeed,up till now importation of inferior quality fuel is still on going! n the government is celebrating that the naira is stabilizing at #1500/$!,what a shameful irony, selling of crude oil to dangote in naira has no tangible value in real practical terms, the federal government should make an arrangement of selling certain amount of crude oil to dangote at a reduced rate so that dangote too will sell the refined fuels to Nigerians at reduced prices for the country to see real benefits, the naira should ordinarily be amongst the strongest currencies in Africa n not the dismal rate we are been decieved to accept n celebrate now.
