What most people, don't understand about this Igbo apprenticeship system, is that it is not about the money you are settled. But the knowledge acquired and the connections you make. It's just like attending school, you leave school with the knowledge you acquired. After all school doesn't settle you with money when you graduate. I once used to patronize a big dealer in electricals and cables. His most senior apprentice then knew all his oga clients and customers. When he eventually got free it wasn't difficult for him to successfully set his own business because he had made all the right connections during the course of his apprenticeship. That is the main essence of the apprenticeship system. Knowledge and connections. Not how much you were settled with. |

Igbo apprenticeship is what made igbos recover quickly after the Civil War. Apart from the small money given to the apprentice, he has been trained in business trading, network connections will guarantee him getting goods on credit. He already had customers on ground. In some cases, he gets linked up with the supplier of goods. No waste no loss |

MrBadNews:What did you learn the whole time with your oga ? If you still need your oga to sit you down and hint you on how to be successful then it means you just wasted your time with your oga as the whole aim of the apprenticeship is for you to lead how to successfully run a business. |

TimeManager:So you can see what following APC blindly has turned a young man like you into. Following APC blindly does not enable one to reason appropriately anymore. Let’s put it this way: Buhari became the President of Nigeria in 2015. You were his ardent follower, yet struggling to make ends meet. That’s ten years ago. In 2022, while Buhari was in his seventh year, the young man who was passing through the apprenticeship system had completed his learning and was settled with 500k. You were warming up to support a certain Asiwaju Tinubu, a very wealthy politician. While you did not have shishi in your pocket and no access to get money from BAT, the young man started his business with the 500k. While you were trekking up and down with nothing to show for it, the young man was working hard to grow his business. He applied the business skills learnt from his master, selling the same products that made his master wealthy. With the 500k, he has started off a new branch. While you are there waiting for crumbs and grants from your APC government, the young man who did not attend any private, state or federal university, has become very financially stable, with his 500k. Rather than ask how the young man and others who passed through this world acclaimed apprenticeship system to take you in and teach you, you allowed tribal and racial sentiments to blind your reasoning. While you are still parading the streets of your community in search of your way out of the wilderness, the young man has made it. The FG is open to discuss with him. The banks are waiting to assist with finance if he wants. Society recognizes him. BAT will easily listen to him and even ask you to learn from him. If he had done “corner-corner doings” and the authorities have not arrested him so far, do you not see that jealousy has gotten the better part of you? Is it not better to do the same “corner-corner things” than to be a slave to politicians, begging for crumbs daily? Between you and him who will politicians speedily allow to enter their offices and homes? Bros, poverty no dey let person get sense. Leave poverty make poverty leave you. With your education, how far between you and him? Who is a slave now? Leave jealousy make e no kill you. |

Business sometimes is trickery. The Oga might not even have a savings or profit of N500k in 7 years. It's better to place the guy on monthly salary and let him save himself. |

TimeManager:Apprenticeship isn't all about the money they settle u at the end but also the knowledge of the business imparted into u and and connection given to u which can be more valuable than money. |

The most important thing is the acquired skills and not the money given. Even with 100k settlement, one with the required skills and discipline will still prosper. With 10 million settlement without the required skills one will go broke. |

TimeManager:It is never slavery You learn valuable business skills and get connected to honest suppliers and excellent lines of credit...this is the only advantage that Ibos have over you Yorubas that gives them the audacity to claim they're more hardworking and that y'all are lazy It's all in the igba-boi programme, if not that y'all are too mentally lazy to figure it out |

TimeManager:The experience he gathered in trading in those 7 years is worth millions of naira. An inexperienced trader will lose millions in an unknown business. Also he earned that 500k for 7 years labour, his head must certainly be correct in using it judiciously. He could never have squandered it. Look at him now Coscharis boss in his time settled him with #200!. His brother said he should accept it, but he took it because that's the reward for his many years labour, he's a billionaire today. Sometimes in business, experience/ business skill is more important than the amount of money |

TimeManager:Hmmm deep... 500k cannot even rent a shop, talk less of starting a business, so it's not even a feasible amount to start a small business. The guy might have his side hustle, be it legit or illegit, but I don't think it's from that 500k. |
| Re: Man Who Served His Oga For Seven Years Settled With Only ₦500,000 by doyinbaby(f): 4:26am On Mar 09, 2025 |
There should be an agreement/contract before apprenticeship which the amount for settlement and duration of settlement is agreed before commencement of apprenticeship so no one is disappointed or unhappy. |
