TimeManager:I disagree. Even though I am not igbo I love the igbo apprenticeship scheme that is now an economic culture for them.appretincehip is someone allowing you to use his Buisness to gain experience for a couple of years and still pay you off after you get the experience and expertise. I mean that is a fair deal. Meaning all the financial mistakes, pitfalls and ignorance that you will have done and used to destroy your own Buisness, you have learnt in running another person's Buisness. I mean if u look at it objectively the oga is doing the apprentice a favour because if you go to the university for 4years to study a course, will the university give you money to start up your own Buisness abi them go help you look for job? It's because a lot of apprentice in nigeria have an exploitative mindset that's why they always want to cheat their oga at the end of the day short change themselves. Who are you doing ,your oga or yourself |

ikaboy:These are typically the words of criminals who parade themselves as bosses. You can spend that 7 years in a proper company or factory, earn your money in full, and still gain those extras (contacts, knowledge, and experience). Any Igbo apprenticeship system that comes without a contractual agreement and pay in this century is fraudulent. Such bosses should be arrested and jailed for human rights abuses and forced labour or child labour (as applicable). Many times, these nwa boys are not gaining any meaningful, transferable skills, apart from telling lies and luring people to pay for overvalued, overpriced, and sometimes fake items. That's not skill acquisition. Take that boy to a supermarket or mall where prices are clearly marked on each item, and you'll see a useless, clueless salesman. If you must work like a slave without pay, at least, learn a proper skill like tailoring, plumbering, carpentry, catering, etc. |

Some of the reasons that determines how much you are settled is how the business thrives under your stewardship. Another factor is theft or mismanagement under your stewardship. I know some owners are heartless but there are factors over the years of service that determines how much you get at the end of the day |

TimeManager:Don't rush to comment on topics you barely have knowledge of. The apprenticeship system is not about the amount they settle you. Even if his boss doesn't settle him, provided he was humble enough to learn and his boss showed him most of his secrets, he will still make it sooner or later. Many wholesalers he knew through his boss will readily give him goods on credit to sell then pay later. Some of his Oga's customers will patronise him because some people would have preferred and trusted him at his oga's shop. Some will hear about his poor settlement and also help him. There are so many things I can't type here. You cannot compare a tree that grew it's roots for seven years b4 germination to the one that grew within weeks. |

The mentality of this apprenticeship scheme that was the deal of its envy is being defeated by the dubious tactics of both parties... The apprentice wants to milk the boss dry before settlement and the boss too is waiting to shortchanged the apprentice. The modern social influences that is making the young ones believe that loyalty doesn't pay bills, shortcut to success (fraud and rituals) seems the major reasons this system is collapsing... I love the system but wish these people could take people of other tribes. |

TimeManager:Wee you keep quiet? No one is trying to convince you of anything so just wrap yourself with your cloak of ignorance and keep your vapid opinions to yourself. Can you monetise the grace and intelligence, discipline and connections that it takes to turn around 500k and make it into millions? You go into apprenticeship first and foremost, to learn business. Learn it well and even without tangible capital, you will do well. |
| Re: Man Who Served His Oga For Seven Years Settled With Only ₦500,000 by prigoz(m): 7:27am On Mar 09, 2025 |
It is not how far but how well. It is better that your oga settle you with 100k from his heart and blessed you than giving you 20m and say that it will not be well with you. |
| Re: Man Who Served His Oga For Seven Years Settled With Only ₦500,000 by BabaIbo: 7:36am On Mar 09, 2025 |
TimeManager:You are just foaming in your mouth Mr man. 500k as of 2021 is not bad. I started my business around that time with similar amount, and today I own a building, I don buy car, I am married, I have invested in people and still investing in them etc. Although, some bosses are wicked or evil, there are many things involved. Some of these apprentice are wicked or evil, some have committed many things during their stay and during their settlement is when the book or chapter will be open and many times their bosses will deduct the cost from their settlement money. Some when they are close to settlement, their oga will open another branch or send them to another branch, get an apartment for them, and when it is time, they will check and balance everything, the cost of living during that period will be on his settlement and his settlement will be based on how he handled that business. So, these things are longer and deeper than you know. |

TimeManager:You don't know the truth. It's the opposite of slavery. It's an education. The best business degree in the country. For 7 years, you learn the workings of business, you understand marketing, networking, sales, bookkeeping and at the end, you are paid to replicate what you have learnt. On the other hand, you take a business degree in the university of Ibadan, you pay a hefty fees, you have very little practical experience, zero networking experience and at the end, you keep writing application letters. Who is the slave among the 2? That is the truth you should embrace. |

Acidosis:A 15 year old boy with no experience in life and education upto jss3 will work and earn in a 'proper' company..lol. That 5 to 7 yrs he's getting grilled in the trade is the same 5 to 7 years u spend in the university before u come out and start carrying files and filed out footwears looking for a job, while the now 20 yr old former apprentice is now already a boss ,and ready to take in an apprentice of his own. Secondly do u know that ogas house is all found? Oga takes care of the boys, teach Dem other skills like driving all kinds of vehicles, obtaining licences for them, sometimes passports n visas.. oga looks after the boys family to some extent..like rendering financial help to the parents n siblings, getting involved in any ceremonies like burials, weddings etc in tge family...sending bags of rice and money during festive periods to the apprentices family.. while as a worker in this your proper factory u look after yourself completely.. one bout of malaria/ typhoid or appendicectomy can even wipe out your 6 months savings ..and ur oga go still dey wan sack u for unproductivity for that period of your debility ![]() |

TimeManager:Wrong Mentality! Apprenticeship is not slavery.... Someone need to teach younger ones the secret of a business... No shortcut to success... He is successful cos of the apprenticeship training... N500k is a seed to start something and grow from it ..... Learn from the parable of a dollar in the bible. |

TimeManager:Apprenticeship is slavery , I know someone who served his oga 9 good years he was settled with 1million naira for 9 good years, I will advice anybody going for this , rather you want to learn business, two years it's enough, work for your money and set yourself up , many that did apprenticeship were not settled at all what a waste of years, some never made it alive |

givedemwotowoto:N500k was big money then at least it fetched US$1,150. Which is equivalent to N2 million now. Apprenticeship is best form of learning skill. This was how Igbo survived post-civil war economic doom and gaining of higher number of millionaires in igboland in 1980s and 1990s |

Jamie248:I'm not Yoruba but I tell you, this is more or less a slavery. See how his dad ended up with stroke. We have heard a lot of similar cases where the boys eventually ran away or return to the village for Oga refusal to settle them after years of serving him. The Yoruba system trains the apprentice for six months to one year and then he/she becomes the Oga of him/herself. The advantage to this is the fact that the Yoruba system allows them to go to school and then resume work after close of school unlike the Igbo system that mostly deprives them of education. The Igbo system separate those kids from their parents in the village and make them servitude to their ogas who uses them as he pleases. |
