It was fun filled galore and pomp as graduating students of set 2024 Bamidele Olumilua university of Education, science and technology had their convocation ceremony for the first time after the institution was upgraded by the NUC and FG into tertiary status! However, one thing that marred this occasion was the lack of quick punctuality of dignitaries and disorganized attitude of the institution as a whole regarding the calibre of such an event. It is to note that promptness is one thing that Nigerian institutions always lack in response to situations on ground all the time. Secondly, parents and some guardians had no sitting space as the canopies provided wasn't enough to cater for the population of graduate friends, well wishers and families who came to share in such a precious moment. It will be foolish to give this occasion a grade A + score for hosting such an event. Sometimes one always wonders if students of institutions are always at the receiving end or if the relevant authorities of the schools are at the giving end or vice versa when it comes to organizing any event be it academic, religious or any other event. Orderliness and prompt process has always been the bane of Nigerian institutions to write about. The media will not go straight to the issue because of what they will gain or because of the direction of news these days. One wonders if the money that was collected from the graduating students was little or too much or mismanaged in organizing an event of such magnitude. It's what makes one question authority all the time! Thirdly, the high level of political involvement has always either made or marred performances of institutions. The usual parley and loyalism of the school management with politicians is not helping matters at all. One wonder if the interest of any school management or staff lies towards the school and students or in their own selfish greed for top positions. Politics has truly ruined school reputation and credibility these days. The school had to waste time and wait for politicians to arrive before starting the event proper. Such things are very bad most especially for an event of such status holding for the first time. I dislike political involvement and ideology in any institution because it will breed characters of the coming generation of graduates in the near future. If the mind of a typical school staff is to continue to lobby incumbent politicians for positions in an institution then the interest will not be geared towards the development and progress of such institutions. Away with titles and reputations, loyalism has been the gear of corruption in institutions and it has also extended its arm towards new and old students also in the school. The school has become a political play ground for loyalists and betrayist and conspiracies all the time. One particular staff is loyal to a political party or person above another and this erodes professionalism and accountability of school staff and performance of school management. Another discovery in the institution is the dearth of functional or comatose situation of school machineries and infrastructure. An institution suppose to have functional libraries or places of work or internships on campus that will create job opportunities for students and also help in accessibility of services that will help the academic environment but one wonders if all of such things are functional or have stopped working. A notable observation is that not all students graduated today because of issues between them and the school authorities. It is clear that both parties are always wrong one time or the other . One thing is for sure, politics and money have replaced character and efficiency in many institutions. The other thing noticed was the wastage of school land not utilized or laying unused. Accomodation has always been the problem of major institutions in Nigeria. BOEUSTI is not left out of this deficiency. The current set of students are not supposed to be living off campus as this results in a lot of antisocial vices, crime and all sort of bad influences from the surrounding off campus. Why can't an institution have accomodation halls for male and female students on campus and why can't they train students to also maintain those places? Today, lack of accomodation has birthed high rate of crime, cultism, fraud and evil vices among students. There is also an abuse of student rights and human rights by various landlords accommodating students off campus. It will be good if the state government can build accommodation halls near every faculty so as to sustain students and make them easily accessible to their centers of learning and lecture halls. Furthermore,Monecracy is now the order of the day in most schools.it has bred corruption as a new foundation on which current academic work is laid on! What are we teaching the new generation of tomorrow when everything to be done is about money money and money! The things that are lawfully established as the school rules and regulations are not upheld unless money is involved in the process. Life is not about money and money doesn't shape character nor build people, instead it is a tool of corruption and destruction of federal character when misued! The normal process of things have been marred and substituted with bribery and corruption. Nothing will work or works in some institutions unless money is involved. We have a new system that has bedeviled hardwork, transparency and true merit because of monecracy at work. If all that is been taught is about making money then we have a long way to go. Future generations cannot be sustained and built or grow in character based on money! Money is just a tool and the love of it is the root of all evil. Money should not be the language that substituted discipline, hardwork, etiquette and resilience among students. Unfortunately, this is the new corrupt system that is displacing true character in a typical graduate today. The normal grab and grab or give and grab in exchange for academic excellence is the cesspit of corruption today. Money for almost every process that is normally a normal duty and responsibility of the school has replaced true professionalism and efficiency of academic excellence. It's saddening to note that results are brought and sold today. The brilliant and intelligent students are not given their dues unless they bribe their way through at certain point in their academic terms. Those who have money are now the qualified ones. We have a system where by if you can spendoney you can buy the way of your wards into academic excellence. No wonder, hardwork and meritious labour is no longer seen as worth while and sacrificing or rewarding by a typical student today. It's all about money! ,money ! Money!!!! The seventh thing noticed was peanuts being given to students who were overall best in their various faculty or departments! It was so deafening to many there and it looked somehow that a student who spent four or five years in a school and graduated will be rewarded with peanuts at the end of the academic journey of excellence! This shows you how our current set of leaders value hardwork and meritious study to future plans. Education is no longer the best legacy and it is seen from what students were rewarded today! It's a shame that in the 70s and 80s when students were graduating, companies and employers of labour will already be at the Convocation ceremony with letters of employment and job offers without connections or favouritism but it is not in today's academic world. Education is seen like a struggle than like a path to greatness. The value we place on education is not reflected in the life of some graduates who remain jobless after graduating. This is not to wish them bad ,but one wonders how painful it is to see these graduates either remain at home or jobless after their graduation! It is the society we are now in and it's a pity that I weep sadly for the generation of students we have now. I really wish this painful trend will come to an end. This country has really dealt with students, destiny has been destroyed and time entirely wasted. During academic years ,strikes and crisis may either elongate a school term, but after every student is now at the mercy of the labour market no matter how they graduate. If you don't have a masters or PHD or doctorate ,you cannot be employable. This is saddening to me. Academic environments in Nigeria are like the valley of the shadow of death, but the labour market is like hell fire itself. One wonders of it was better not to attend school than to attend and remain jobless thinking the village people have cursed them. Is it that the set of graduates are not marketable or skillfully or was it the academic environment responsible for the type of graduates brought out in today's institution for the labour market? Lack of maintenance culture: this is the worst malady that plagued every organization and institution in Nigeria. No maintenance culture because those who are in charge feed and destroy a system instead of supporting and building it up. The mindset of a vc or provost is to make millions for example than to better the school! There is no other school of thought that doesn't support this thesis. Why is everything about success tied to money,it really doesn't make sense! Why does everything allocated for maintenance end up in the wrong hands or is diverted towards another purpose? Why do we have all these things all the time? I tell you it's because of the character of people in charge at any given time If the mind is to amass wealth than to do public service, then maintenance will be packed aside. It's just a fact and it requires no law court for such answer. Look around you and see some school infrastructure and you will be amazed at how rickety and old some have remained . You will also be amazed at how abused, abandoned and neglected existing structures have remained! What really happened and who is to blame? Is it the current school management or the previous corrupt ones? Truth is those currently in charge are to blame because of the diversion of allocated maintenance funds for infrastructure or services! Students who vandalize school property also share in this blame. I believe the solution is to orientate the minds of student and teach them a maintenance culture about infrastructure and services. Lastly, welfare is something no one cares about unless money is involved! This ought not to be so,if the only way students can care for their lecturers or other school staff is by bribery and corruption then we have a serious problem foundationally in all institutions! Why does a school takes time to clear a student transcript, sir down and discover that if money is not involved, things will not work. This is a bad precedent and must stop. Money should not be involved in all processes educationally and for administrative duties. Let every one keep to his or her side of responsibility and see how things will work out efficiently. If not, things will continue to get worse and worse. Let the current school authorities have a serious thought about these things and correct all these anomalies that have been created by wrong interests and liabilities from situations. It's now or never Once gain happy graduation to all and may God provide a good job for you all. |

Tobi2025:Oga, that thing is too long. Is that your project? I am sure your entire project didn't contain this number of words. What do you take us for here? You wrote this for a convocation that has maximum of 3 hours duration. What a shame! |

It's always surprising to me when people don't have time to know truth because it's too long, but when they have time for a short lie that will change their lives forever it's there they would pay attention kabillion: |

Tobi2025:I'm not trying to diss you, but if you're constructive enough, you should have realized that the attention span of people keep reducing from time to time. Nobody has the luxury of time to read all those things you typed up there as it has no value to them. For me as a person, I've never heard of BOUESTI until I saw your write up. Now give me a reason to spend 45 minutes of my life reading an epistle about a BOUESTI that is not profitable to me... |
