IBB Solely Responsible For June 12 Annulment, Abacha’s Family Declares by Omooba77(op): 2:44pm On Mar 09, 2025
The family of late Head of State, General Sani Abacha has formally reacted to a claim by his predecessor, General Ibrahim Babangida that their late patriarch was responsible for the annulment of the June 12 Presidential Election which was won by the murdered Social Democratic Party SDP flag bearer, Chief Moshood Abiola.

Scion of the family, Mohammed Abacha in a statement on Sunday in Abuja regretted that Babangida’s memoir, “A Journey in Service” missed the opportunity and failed to make history as a truthful and objective account of past events.

“As one public commentator aptly put it, honesty, sincerity, and integrity are virtues not commonly associated with the author”, said Mohammed.

He said as a “military president”, Babangida wielded absolute control and so should be held responsible for all happened when he held sway.

The statement reads; “Our attention has been drawn to recent claims made by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, in his newly launched book, ‘A Journey in Service’, where he alleged that the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election was the responsibility of the late General Sani Abacha. These claims have sparked widespread controversy and necessitate a clear response from the immediate family of General Sani Abacha and the entire Abacha clan in the interest of historical accuracy and justice.

“It is important to state unequivocally that General Sani Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time the June 12 election was annulled. The decision to annul the election was made under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who, as the then Head of State, held absolute executive powers and was solely responsible for the actions of his government. Any attempt to shift this blame onto General Sani Abacha, who was a very senior military officer within the regime, is a deliberate distortion of historical facts.

“For years, various actors have attempted to rewrite the history of that critical period in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. However, the facts remain unchanged. We urge Nigerians to be wary of revisionist narratives that seek to manipulate public perception for personal or political reasons. The memory of our late father and leader, General Sani Abacha, must not be tarnished by baseless accusations meant to absolve those who were truly responsible.

“Furthermore, we wish to emphasize that despite this unfortunate attempt to shift blame, General Sani Abacha remained a true and loyal friend to General Ibrahim Babangida up to the time of his death. He was a man of unwavering commitment to his comrades. We also find it necessary to state that at the time General Babangida’s life was under threat, it was General Abacha who came to his rescue, ensuring his safety.

“We take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to the many Nigerians who have risen in defense of General Sani Abacha in an effort to set the record straight. Your unwavering commitment to truth and historical accuracy is deeply appreciated, and we acknowledge the outpouring of support from those who refuse to allow history to be distorted.

“As we reflect on Nigeria’s history, we acknowledge General Sani Abacha’s time in leadership and the role he played in the nation’s development. His contributions, like those of past leaders, remain part of our country’s history. We believe that history is best judged with fairness and objectivity.

“We regret that ‘A Journey in Service’ missed the opportunity and failed to make history as a truthful and objective account of past events. As one public commentator aptly put it, honesty, sincerity, and integrity are virtues not commonly associated with the author”.

Obasanjo, atiku and now ibb make abacha look like a bad man,

Abacha administration oversaw an increase in the country's foreign exchange reserves from $494 million in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997, and reduced the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion by 1997.

Abacha also constructed between 25–100 km of urban road in major cities such as Kano, Gusau, Benin ,
Funtua , Zaria , Enugu, Kaduna , Aba , Lagos , Lokoja and Port Harcourt.

Abacha brought the privatisation programs of the Ibrahim Babangida administration to a halt, reduced an inflation rate of 54% inherited from Ernest Shonekan to 8.5% between 1993 and 1998, all while the nation's primary commodity, oil was at an average of $15 per barrel.

GDP growth, despite being estimated to be higher than the 2.2% growth in 1995, was largely limited to the petroleum sector.

Projects he executed within 4 years and 7 months his administration lasted without taking any loan.

Looks like Babangida’s trying to pull a political magic trick, shift the blame, rewrite the past, and hope nobody notices, but history isn’t that easy to erase. shocked

We knew he was lying. It's easy to tell lies about the dead. He wouldn't have told such lies , had abacha been alive till today.

Obasanjo told IBB to annul June 12 election, not abacha. Obj said he'd mess with our economy due to his lavish lifestyle and sheer indiscipline with lust for women. MKO would have become president eventually. There was this news of him parading harlots in a hotel in the USA with pictures of him rattling the usa and global media. They saw it back home and that changed his journey of becoming the president. Those harlots were seen lurking around him and wrapping their hands around his necks in a sultry appearance.

IBB is a coward.

Abacha family should stfu. If IBB annulled the election, why didn't Abacha reinstate the people's mandate reposed in MKO? It was Abacha who jailed MKO after his Epetedo declaration. Many of us here knew the story clearly. Abacha and IBB were both guilty as charged.
Re: IBB Solely Responsible For June 12 Annulment, Abacha’s Family Declares by Babangidapikin: 6:13pm On Mar 09, 2025
He took full responsibility for the annulment, but he said it was done without his approval. It is like giving people responsibility under you, you might not like their decisions but you have to take responsibility and I don't remember him mentioning Gen Sani Abacha directly, I stand to be corrected.

He has never denied "responsibility".

However, it doesn't take too much sense to decode that Abacha was the hidden force behind the annulment of the election. In other words, Abacha effectively forced the annulment of the election, because he was desperate to succeed IBB. There can be no doubt about this.

Re: IBB Solely Responsible For June 12 Annulment, Abacha’s Family Declares by oluztx:
Many Nigerians didn't know Abacha was the one in charge in IBB government. Abacha is the first and only senior military officer to have received 4 star general before attaining head of state. He was the same rank as IBB, that has never happened before. Shows how powerful he was.

Senior military officers respected him more than IBB because he had control and loyalty of all major GOCs, having served as GOC of major battalions and brigades in Ibadan, Kano and Lagos. Most decisions were taken by him, not IBB. IBB was just a ceremonial head of state. The election committee that annulled the Abiola election was headed by Abacha. INEC chairman then Humphrey Nwosu in the interview made it clear Abacha was in charge and was the person he saw at the meetings, not IBB.

When Okar's coup happened, IBB already said his last prayer and knew he was a dead man because he had no powers and control. He was even scared that Abacha has finally taken over. Luckily, Abacha called him and reassured him everything is under control. After that coup, many believed IBB signed agreement with Abacha to handover to him.

Abacha was a good leader. All the money they said he stole and found in foreign accounts were actually money the Nigerian government discreetly stashed overseas used to bypass sanctions. Same thing Iran and North Korea are doing to bypass sanctions. They use these hidden foreign accounts and networks to pay for trades, which keeps good flowing into the country, otherwise Nigerians would have rioted in frustration. But Abacha managed to keep things under control despite severe sanctions intended to frustrate Nigerians to rise up and riot.
