It is one thing to have the infrastructure up and running and it is another thing to have the required designation for the port.

Just like Airports, categorization determines the capacity of the port.

Enugu Airport was just recently categorized as an international airport which will see that international carriers operate in and out of the port.

If the same FG refuses to categorize the sea ports in the SE coastline for importation but rather maintains them as mere oil tanker jetties and export ports then little can be achieved economically for the SE ports of Warri, Calabar, Port Harcourt and even the yet to be constructed Ibaka port.

This is where the opposition lies and there is every indication that the SW selfishly opposes this, while the north is afraid of any major developmental stride in the SS and SE without them because as things stand with the GDP from these regions a sea port is bound to further enrich these state.

There is also the conspiracy of the French concessioned owners of Tin Can Container port who currently enjoy a monopoly in the business. Opening up another port to the east will surely reduce traffic to their port.
Provide concrete proof (and not hearsay, propaganda or conjecture) to show that the South-West opposes the categorisation of ports in the South-East for importation.

Chief Kema Chikwe was Minister of Transport under OBJ, Chief Ojo Maduekwe (May 6, 1945 – June 29, 2016) was also appointed Minister of Transport in 2001, while Chief Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi is now Minister of Transport under PMB. If your allegations are true, how come your people who headed the Ministry of Transport all through the ages have failed to do something about it?? shocked

macjive01:
A high-wired plot to obstruct the actualisation of the Ibaka Deep Seaport project within the deep waters of Akwa Ibom State, by some highly placed persons working in tandem with some officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has been uncovered.

Daily Sun checks revealed that the plot is being hatched by some opposition (APC) governors and some highly placed Nigerians to obtain an ‘obnoxious letter’ from the NPA with a view to presenting the seaport project as not viable.

The plot, investigations revealed, was designed to ensure that the Ibaka Deep Seaport Initiative does not see the light of day, thereby paving way for development of new seaports in other parts of the country.

It was gathered that the conspiracy against Akwa Ibom State seeks to discredit the seaport project under a ‘non-viability cover’, despite the fact that the Federal Government had set up an implementation committee to facilitate preparatory works and captured the project in the 2014 budget, having been convinced that the port would boost the nation’s economy and that of the West African sub-region.

The Akwa Ibom State Government in collaboration with the NPA is planning to develop a Deep Sea Port within the Ibom Industrial Free Trade Zone to facilitate economic development of the South Eastern part of Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.

Checks by Daily Sun further revealed that in December 2012, the government had engaged international consultants to assist NPA in the execution of preliminary technical, bankability and feasibility studies which found the project viable and bankable with proven economic development capabilities within the region.

Sources revealed that the choice of Ibaka for the proposed seaport dated back to 1952 by the British government, and a feasibility study to that effect submitted to the British Crown even before the shallow and inland water ports at Calabar and Port Harcourt were established.

Maritime analysts posited that Ibaka is the most viable location for the seaport, going by the deep sea draught of 16m, which would need no dredging as well as the strategic proximity of the proposed port to the corridors of the main Gulf of Guinea and the commercial cities of Aba and Onitsha, noting its nearness to Exxon Mobil and other major oil concerns as well as the Sao Tome and Principe is a great advantage to the nation’s economic drive.’’

An investment expert advised those plotting the failure to look elsewhere, saying no right thinking government would allow such a huge economic opportunity to be sacrificed on the alter of blind politics against principles of justice and fairness particularly for a state that was the highest crude oil producer and biggest contributor to national wealth.

He said it would be counter-productive to the ongoing Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan and a great disservice to both the South-South and West Africa’s hope for economic renaissance.

On the commitment of Akwa Ibom State Government to ensure that the project was a reality, officials of the government said the Akpabio administration had done all necessary preparatory works and that the state had made a huge financial commitment to its realisation, which included and acquisition of 14,400 hectares of land, appointment of transaction advisors as well as the setting up of an implementation committee to help drive the initiative.

State officials said the state governor’s readiness in supporting the Federal Government and other investors to actualise the dream was unshaken.

They killed it ofcourse.
Anyone who follows the politics of attrition played under the APC as is led by the Lagos mob since 2015, should've known this. They are intentionally making the cost of doing business in the east to skyrocket. Directly making the cost of living to go higher as aresult.., and they won't stop if they are not stopped.
They will never allow the development of any serious business activities in the former Eastern Nigeria. The ports are their primary targets. That has been the plan since 1966 and they get away with it because those who think that if they call themselves "the South South", Abuja will be treat them differently from the South-east, refused to get the memo.

It is not just the port. They are the brains behind the lack of any serious rail works in the east. Even the roads. When Fashola was the labour minister for 8 solid years, all he did was to fixate on the second Niger bridge as a propaganda tool, meanwhile nothing was happening elsewhere. Infact the Senate once called him out for presenting budgetary bills with specific allocations made for specific projects, then after the budget is passed, he will appropriate funds wholesale and then chose which project he funds and not based on what was written in the budget! A former minister of works from the Southwest, Adeseye Ogunleye, once boasted that he deliberately refused to do roads in the Southeast, and nothing happened to him..

If only gov Akpabio focused on getting this project up and running while he had his PDP & SS man at the center. But alas, he was busy frolicking & dancing atilogwu with Jonathan in Aso Rock, while using his ill-gotten wealth to intimidate his people.

We southerners like to blame everyone else for our woes. Tell me: Why did Jonathan not get this Ibaka Seaport project running? Why did he not resuscitate Tinapa? Why did he not begin the environmental cleanup of the Niger Delta region as recommended by UN report? Why are all the federal roads in the SS region still in a terrible mess? Has Jonathan awarded any oil block to a SS person?

Tomorrow we will blame Buhari (Hausa) or OBJ (Yoruba) for marginalization. Same thing as we Africans blaming the West for all our problems when we Africans are more of a problem to our continent. Smhh!
The south south and the south east are the real promoters of a great Nigeria with no tribalism, the southwest and the north are here for themselves QED

This has been their game since the end of the civil war in order to maintain Lagos as the singular port.

They also directed all Oil companies to have their corporate headquarters in Lagos.
How can Yorubas direct private oil companies to have their hqs in Lagos? The way many of you reason leaves much to be desired

The south-east and the southsouth should get the memo and start doing whatever they can to save themselves. Priding ourselves as being the moat patriotic in a coubtey where the rest are proud to be the most tribal doeant make sense.

The southwest and the north are ready to drop an atomic bomb in the east if that is what it takes to take full control. Their ruthless approach to issues involving these other two regions need to be checkmated. You can not be building a country where others see governance as a "come and chop" oppurtuinity.

No nation has grown like that. And folks have to understand that as oil goes out of fashion, the south west and north are migrating towards gas. The east owns almost all the gas. They have used the oil to build up lagos and Abuja while leaving the former Eastern Nigeria fallow. They should not be allowed to do so with gas..

Yes. That is why we are wicked, discriminatory and unwelcoming to you when you flood our land in the the thousands daily. Guy, believe me when I say you guys are mentally unstable and need to seek help.

You people are suffering from PPD. You are welcomed in Yoruba land and flourish there, while the opposite is the reality in the SE, yet you lie publicly that Yoruba's hate you, are killing you, destroying your business etc. You lot are the ones with wickedness and evil, excacerbated by mental illness, in their DNA.

Leave that tribal buffoon. He is just trying to muddle the discuss.. They think they are the most clever..
Someone from Yorubaland will be advising someone from igboland or ibibioland to stop complaining about federal governments unwillingness to develop Eastern ports. He believes you are being too sectional and tribal by insisting to have the ports at Calabar, Warri, Portharcourt modernised.. Imagine such selfishness..

The same person will never travel from say ibadam to Calabar to clear his goods if he was the one at the receiving end. He can never tolerate that for a week. As at today, to move 40ft containers from Lagos to Aba, you are most probably going to add an extra 4 to 5 million naira to your overhead costs. Infact, at a point some months back, the freight charge from China for a 40ft container was almost the same with the cost of transporting the same containers from Lagos to the east! These additional costs will be passed on to the hapless consumers in the east, thereby making the products extremely costly when compared to the prices at ibadam or Lagos.

Yet the Southwest wants this status quo to continue. Lots of accidents and deaths on the way as goods are transported to the SE and the SS from Lagos, but they don't care. Their answer is to build a trillions naira highway from Tinubus Lekki port to the South South! Why not open up the South South ports, so they clear their goods at their backyard? On a good day, it will take less than an hour from Aba to Portharcourt. But most of the containers opened at Aba are cleared from Lagos.

Some of you are too ridiculous for words. Onnè port is there in the South -south. You can import anything through there.

If all your importers from the Southeast and South-south were routing all imports through there, wouldn't you have far better turn around times for delivery, and far lower transportation charges?

I hope you know you are talking to an importer with over 20 years experience..? Not a newbie on this one.
We know the game your uncles play to keep eastern port dormant, using the tentacles at the federal level. All the beurucratic bottlenecks and added charges that make the shippers do all they can to offload at Lagos, thereby making the landing cost at any eastern port higher... Don't get me started..
Keep you gaslighting for the uninitiated..

In any event, where is the ibaka port?
Have you guys not turned the project into a "stillborn" as you were accused here...?

Which uncles? The ones you kept in your backyard?

You claim to be an importer with over 20 years experience and yet you do not know that goods of all kinds can be imported through Onnè port and that the same Onnè is the 2nd highest revenue generating port in the federation?

Your Ibaka port is something that the state government needs to work hand-in-hand with the authorities to make a reality.

Lagos State Government worked assiduously to create Lekki Free Trade Zone and the new port, and even brought in foreign companies like Tolaram to partner with them, to develop the port.

What did the governors in your region do, to ensure that Ibaka port becomes a reality?

You just keep lamenting online and wailing, without offering concrete solutions.

When will you start giving examples with Ogun and Ondo states? They are all South West littoral states too. Everyday Lagos this, Lagos that, na only Lagos waka come? Which part of Lagos development is not attached to all she has gained as a former capital of Nigeria? Give me examples with Ondo! Tinubu is now using federal funds to build up Lagos rails. Tomorrow, you will appear here with your gigantic skull to claim that all those were built by Awolowo and Tilimgbu..
Spare me ahbegi..
Don't let me start with you this morning..
