When the agitation for the creation of Rivers state was being championed, it was done by the ijaws and ogonis.

In Short Dappa Biriye was in the forefront for the creation of Rivers state. When the state was eventually created, the ijaws were the ones calling the shot. First civilian governor Melford Okoli -Ijaw, Second civilian Governor- Chief Rufus Ada George-ijaw

After, Bayelsa ceded from Rivers state and in 1998, it was the ijaws that were calling the shot in the two dominant political parties. Marshal Harry, A. k Dikibo and Alabo Graham Douglas were the founders of PDP in Rivers state. They singlehandedly made Odili the governor. The ijaw had the opportunity of producing the governor of Rivers state in 1999. But the trio that I mentioned, felt that justice should prevail. That was how Odili, from the minority of minority ethnic group was dispatched and made a governor. Meanwhile, Odili was the deputy governor under Chief Rufus Ada George

And Odili having completing his tenure reneged on the upland-Riverine power dichotomy of sharing power, by bringing his political son, Amaechi to be governor. Wike, you are all aware that it was Jonathan and his wife that were instrumental to his emergence as governor.

And it might interest you to know that the ijaws are the only ethnic group in Rivers state that have presence in the three senatorial district in Rivers state.

The reason your people hate Ken Saro Wiwa was his support for Nigeria during the war. The people I mentioned were amongst those that sold the idea of State creation to Gowon as a way of winning the war. Have you forgotten that Ken Saro Wiwa was the administrator of Bonny during the war.

I am not an Ijaw person, neither am I from Rivers state. My interest in this issue arose from Wike’s statement on the Ijaws being the minority tribe in Rivers state.

Aside from history, you gave the political dimension from the days of Medford Okilo.

Every state, just like the country itself, has this political arrangement where political leaders are chosen from different zones, to foster growth and unity. That’s why today BAT is the President, when power was ceded to the south.

I see it that Odili distorted the political arrangement in Rivers state, as it was no longer the turn of the Ikwerres after his tenure. The Ikwerres took 16 years, affecting the balance of power. Magnus Abe had been trying his best for the governorship to be rotated to the Ogoni people, who by the way also have four local governments like the Ikwerres.

Wike made a wise decision by slowing power to get to the Ijaws. The issue became his disagreement with Fubara. Making such inflammatory statement against the Ijaws was very unnecessary and absolutely uncalled for. If he did not hand over to an Ijaw person, someday it would get to the Ijaws and the Ogonis.

Even though I am Ijaw but I represent the diversity of Rivers state. My great grand mum is Ikwerre. My grand mother is Ogba. And my circle of friends are mostly Ikwerres. The truth is, whenever you label them igbo they flare up. They have refused to accept the identity. 70% of Ikwerre people always deny their ancestry to Igbo. This is a fact. Same thing with Etche people. Same thing with Ogba People. This is the reality in Rivers State.
