Sometime in 2004, my Uncle bought a two plots of land somewhere in Ojo, Lagos, Nigeria.

But what happened to him after 6 months of purchasing the land was a shocker! Something he never lived to tell the story (God rest his soul).
This is a true life story, and if you are looking to buy land in Lagos, then you need to pay attention so you don't fall victim of this same scheme.


Someone had told him there were plots of lands around the area, so he went there and got introduced to the "omonile guy" who claimed to be in charge of the lands.

After showing him around, they negotiated, he paid for the land and was issued a receipt. Deals closed and everyone went their separate ways. My Uncle went home, happy that he just added two plots of lands to his name.


But...

He never knew that the same land that was sold to him was sold to someone else.
A couple of months later, he told my dad about the land, and my dad advised him to put a fence around the land and a gate so he could completely secure the land.


He didn't take action immediately. It was a month after the discussion that he called my dad to accompany him to the location so he could start fencing the land.


On getting there, they met a shocker!
Someone was already building on the land.


What are you guys doing here, my uncle snapped at them! This is my property; how dare you build on my land? One of the laborers responded, Oga na work wey dem send us work na him we dey work for here, oh! I no sabi who you be?


My Uncle kept on yelling and trying to halt their work. A few minutes later, some weird-looking guys showed up. Obviously angry and ready for a fight, they said to my uncle. Who you be?


Obviously scared, he muttered... Na me get this land, Afolabi sold it to me and this is my receipt.
They all looked at him and laughed. Then the leader of the gang said, you better call Afolabi for phone. Na Army Man get this land!


Afolabi no even dey this area again, so make you comot for here.
My Uncle, mustered courage and yelled at him; I own this land, I paid for it. You all have to leave this place now.


The leader of the gang looked at him sternly and said... Oga, e be like say you no want respect yourself abi? Before I close my eyes and open am, make una comot for here now before we disfigure una face.


It was at this point he knew things had gone south. An army Man was building on the land he paid for, and the so-called Afolabi he bought the land from was nowhere to be found!


Oga oya make una comot for here they all yelled, we go change am for una oh. E be like say una no like as una skin fresh abi? My Uncle and Dad obviously could not challenge them, so they left!


They reported the issue to the police station in control of that region, but obviously the police know about the racket happening in that area. They did nothing, claiming that since my uncle cannot get Afolabi, there's nothing they could do about it.


Feeling downcast, my uncle had no choice but to accept his fate. Maybe if he had fenced the land initially, it wouldn't have happened. Or just maybe he didn't ask the right questions before purchasing the land.


I am very sure there are several other people that have had this kind of ugly experience, buying from omonile and then losing the land because the same land was sold to other people. Sad indeed.


But the truth be told, before you buy any land, you have to do your due diligence and ask questions to ascertain the origin of the land before purchasing it.

You can actually save yourself the stress by buying from a reputable company. By doing that, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. All you have to do is pay for the land, get your allocation, and start building.


Most of these companies have a well-structured layout of what they want available in the estate. It's to your own advantage! Zero worries, no omonile wahala, verifiable documents. Your land can never be allocated to someone else.
