I feel on the mortality rate of Agric chickens. You go to sleep one night, the next morning, you will wake up to a dead chicken laying sideways, flat in the cage. It can be very depressing sometimes. But local chickens rarely die once they reach maturity and if there is no serious prey around.
I've come to realise that stress is a major factor in this mortality rate... Especially stress from heat and sometimes, over crowding.

With the right balance, the agric birds are still kind of... Manageable

I prefer Noilers to Broilers by far. I don't think I can raise Broilers again.

How many months to raise noiler and they don't have meat like broiler especially the female one.

Pls how do you that without hen rejecting them
Ensure the hen haven't come out with the chicks, if she has, she will reject the eggs. Monitor the hatching, once she finish hatching, just introduce fresh eggs and take the children to another hen that hatched the same day.

It takes 4 months of intense feeding for them to be as big as Broilers. The male are usually bigger. The female are big too, but not as big as Broiler.

Are noilers the same as local chickens?

You're doing well by updating the thread, and keeping it going.

No. Noilers are not local chickens. But they're the closest to local chickens in my opinion.. Noilera are agric chickens that were introduced into the Nigerian market in 2014. I first got them in Oyo town (from.Amo Hatchery) back in 2016, and no one in my neighbourhood knew what they were back then.

They are Agric chickens that are stronger than Broilers, come in all the variety of colors that local chickens come in, and get almost as big as broilers (the male get as big as Broilers.)

This is how Noilers look. As I said, they come in various colors...just like local chickens, but they are bigger than local chickens.

Lool... This reminds me of when we were kids. We were told to put a knife beside the eggs of a brooding fowl as it will make it hatch all the eggs.Don't know if this is true
Lol

So many myths growing up. I don't think it works. An egg will only become a chic if it is fertilized and has proper heat distribution during brooding. If anyone likes, let them put Voltron's Sword besides the hen! It is Obu eyin they will get after 21 Days!

Lol

Okay. Nice.

Can they also free range like local chickens?

Yeah...better than Broilers, but definitely not as self reliant as local chickens.

Can you believe that they're 12 chicks under this hen. She's keeping them warm as the weather gets colder in the evening. It's almost bedtime for them.

Some of the local chickens doing last minute grubbing before going to bed.

I let the 2 male Noilers out this evening.

They started chasing the local hens around, and the local Rooster had to show them who the boss is. Eventhough they're bigger than him, he chased both of them off like they were kids cheesy

They eventually went to visit their female Noilers cheesy

Omo, where did you get this Noilers? What do you feed them?

They are neat and beautiful. They will be ready for consumption in some months.

I appreciate your consistency in updating the thread. You are making it rich and beautiful. Thanks for the effort.

Thank you too.

I feed the Noilers quality feed...I fed them with Breedwell for the first 3 months. It's like 3-4k more expensive than regular feed brands, but you see good results. I just switched to top feed a couple of weeks ago.

New mother out with her 5 chicks today. She still has 8 unhatched eggs. I'm hoping at least half of them will hatch tomorrow.

You shouldn't have allowed her out yet. She might not hatch the remaining ones again.

True. The door to the shop is always open because there is another hen laying eggs in there right now. When I got back this afternoon, I saw it out already. There was very little I could do.

But you're right. It might not hatch the remaining. It's a lesson learnt sha.

It's always a fascinating sight when a hawk appears and the Rooster makes the warning sound, and all the chickens run for cover.

It happened just now and I have a little more respect for that Rooster. He is doing a great job, cos I didn't see the hawk at first. The Rooster is always alert like a soldier on the battle field.

Hahahahahahahahaha

I bet the local rooster was jealous because the aje butters (male noilers) were more handsome.
They're not called local chicken for nothing. grin

Your birds are so beautiful and healthy.

Do that Flashlight thing I mentioned on the remaining eggs.

Translucent eggs means blanks while blackened ones has a chic withing.

Throw it away the translucent ones then get a basin like container put the remainder and also put the hen to continue to sit on them alongside her hatched chicks.

I carried it back to the eggs, and it sat on them overnight yesterday. 2 more eggs hatched. They're now 7. I carried it to the eggs today too, let's see what happens tomorrow.

Another hen has started the 21 day process, sitting on 9 eggs. The hen hatched 3 eggs end of December... just a little over 2 months ago.

I never knew chickens reproduce this fast. I guess cos rats and birds of prey usually eat half their chicks, so they're made to reproduce fast to keep the food chain going.

I think the rate at which they reproduce and the number of eggs in a clutch is Nature way of compensating for the loses expected in every circle of reproduction.

Animals at the lowest/lower rung of the Food chain produce more than those higher.

Keep up the good work.

Exactly. I had huge losses last night.
Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op):
The Massacre.

We lost 6 chicks and 2 two months old chickens from our local chickens flock last night. The cats are back.

Last night, around midnight, we started hearing the loud noise of one of the hens. When I went outside, I saw it on the cactus-like tree we have in our garden. Her 9 chicks were nowhere in sight. It usually sleeps in a hidden spot in the garden with its chicks. It's the only hen that refuse to sleep in the shop. After getting it off the three, it went to sleep in the shop, while we started the search for the chicks. We found 3 alive, and 4 dead. The cats probably had taken the dead bodies of the remaining 2 away.

This morning, like 6 am, I started hearing the sound of the hen again. I came out and saw it on the tallest tree in our garden. When I looked around, I saw the 2 dead two month old chickens. Looking around, I saw all the dead bodies of the chicks I saw last night were gone. What I guessed was, the cats first kill as many as they can kill, and then come back for their dead bodies. The two months old chickens they killed were on the trail to the spot they sleep, over the fence in my next door neighbor's house. I guess they were dragging the chickens along and abandoned them when they heard me coming.

I usually watch YouTube videos of American poultry farmers complaining about coyotes and foxes killing their chickens. I even remember reading a thread here on Nairaland of a guy raising local chickens a few years ago, and having to abandon the project after preys ate up most of his flock. I never knew I would experience such a loss in just one night.

Life goes on. Lesson learned.
