An 18-Year-Old Boy, Identified As Chinedu Abimbor, has reportedly been shot dead by Police in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the State.

DAILY POST reports that the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, 12 March 2025, at a police checkpoint in the town.

The deceased’s younger brother was, however, said to have been arrested by the police.

The incident sparked protests by youths and the deceased’s family, who demanded justice for the slain teenager and called for the culprit to be brought to book.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victim, who was driving a Mercedes-Benz, refused to stop at a police checkpoint when flagged down by operatives.

He said the young man’s refusal to stop angered one of the operatives, who immediately fired at the vehicle, killing the victim in the process.

He also added that the victim’s brother, who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident, was immediately arrested by the police and taken into custody.

“This development prompted angry youths to take to the streets of Ekpoma on Thursday to demand justice for the slain 18-Year-Old,” he said.

The protesters, who also stopped at the palace of the traditional ruler of Ekpoma, HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, demanded the immediate release of the victim’s brother from custody.

A spokesman for the protesters, who identified himself as Lucky Adaba, said, “We went to the police station to inquire about what could have led to the killing, but the police tear-gassed us and started shooting.

The police have formed the habit of harassing young men driving cars in Ekpoma.”

Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident to ascertain what actually happened.

A statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said the incident involved a joint operation team of security forces and the occupants of an unregistered Mercedes-Benz, resulting in the death of Chinedu Abimbor.

Yamu, who issued the statement to journalists on Friday, explained that the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Command, Betty Otimenyin, had directed the immediate withdrawal of the three patrol teams implicated in the incident from operations.

He said the Commissioner commiserated with the family and friends of the deceased and “called for calm from the general public, with the assurance that justice will be served in the end.”

Two wrongs can never make a right, even if the guy is a criminal or a yahoo boy he doesn't deserve death.

But on the other hand, all these yahoo boys dey show all these police officers shege ooo

I once witnessed a scenario where police stopped a yahoo boy car n he was using the car to push the police. It was highly annoying, the moment they stopped him one officer gave him a thunderous slap

Even observers were happy cos the boy just purposely did a stupid thing

You must stop for the police, especially in cult hotbed like Ekpoma.

Hopefully others learn from him and can all tribalists try to sheath their sword on this thread please?

The worst performing government institution right now that is anti-Nigeria is the Nigeria Police Security Agency

NB: They are not a "Force" but an agency. They don't deserve to be describe as a force.
Re: Police Shoot 18-Year-Old Boy To Death In Edo by Dogalmighty17: 9:36am On Mar 15, 2025
Do you hear of police killings like this in the north? Police know they can't try it. I have watched where a trailer boy came down and exchanged blows with an armed policeman. The policeman's colleagues came to help him and they were equally armed. One trailer boy against 6 police men. The boy gave as good as he got. But not one police man reached for his gun.

Borno state that is the heart of terrorism in Nigeria, has fewer check points than Enugu. All over the south east and south south checkpoints choke but that's not the case in the north. Why is this?

We all know the answer. Until communities begin to demand accountability from law enforcement agents, things like this will keep happening.

Police stop you and you refuse to stop. Why na?

Even at that the idiotic Policeman should chase, not shoot.

While I condemn the shooting of the lad, there is no excuse whatsoever for failing to stop when the police stops you at a checkpoint. No matter your perception of the Nigerian Police Force, they are still on the roads to protect us.

Let's try to equip our cars with cameras to record shady biz. When a police officer stops you, you stop. It is not out of the ordinary for the police to just stop you, it is called random stop and search. It happens even in 'saner climes'. Not to talk of a country riddled with insecurity. Kidnappers use exotic cars to transport their victims these days.

RIP

I've been a prophet for over 20 years loosing my voice everyday because I have to prophesy, yet I don't have benz. Yet one 18 year old buy drives it and refuses to stop at police checkpoint. Crime has become legal in Nigeria.

This I have seen.

When you dress like a yahoo person, drive big unregistered vehicle, the police may want to take advantage.
It's a great lost of life at a very young age. Very sad occurrence.

Jealousy, what has age got to do with the car you drive, and everyone doing well for himself is automatically a yahoo boy, we have a long way to go, can't drive my own car out of fear of being victimized, I'd stop sha, as long as I'm sure it's the police I'd stop, no one deserves to die like that, if he had stopped highest they extort him and he'd still be alive, no amount of money you loose can equal your life, small sense they no get.
Re: Police Shoot 18-Year-Old Boy To Death In Edo by Nobody: 9:50am On Mar 15, 2025
Well deserved!

With the state on insecurity in the country, how can you be flagged by a policeman and ignore. The police did what he had to do.

Only a criminal will not want to stop! Yes! The police are bad and corrupt, everyone knows that, but still not a reason for you to ignore them when flagged.

RIP to that kid but hate the police or not we can’t normalize people fleeing from police at checkpoints for any reason , the insecurity in the country is already too much . We’ve seen so many videos of ignorant people speeding off at police checkpoints especially in EDO state , the other day it was sowore who refused to stop at the command of police traffic officers and you all were praising him , you don’t build a civilized society this way . A simple stop could have prevented all this .
