Pfizer Shuts Down Commercial Operations In Nigeria, Lays Off Employees by ogododo(op): 9:46pm On Mar 15, 2025
Global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has shut down its commercial operations in Nigeria, rendering its commercial employees redundant, according to internal company correspondence obtained by West Africa Weekly.

Documents obtained indicate that affected employees received formal redundancy notifications, signalling a major restructuring of Pfizer’s business model in the country. The documents suggest that the company is moving forward with layoffs but has yet to finalise employee severance packages.

An email dated January 13, signed by Olubukola Oparinde, Manager People Experience, SSA Biopharma, acknowledged employee concerns during discussions about the shutdown and stated that further feedback from leadership would be provided. Employees were issued redundancy notification letters, which they were required to acknowledge, confirming that they had been informed of their job losses.

Further correspondence on January 15 instructed affected staff to sign off on the notifications, emphasising that these were not final redundancy agreements. The company also indicated that severance details were subject to additional approvals.

A follow-up email on February 12 addressed to an employee included severance computation details, suggesting that discussions around employee compensation were ongoing.

Following the shutdown, affected employees are entitled to severance packages, including redundancy benefits, final salary payments, and other entitlements based on their contracts and Nigerian labour laws. However, concerns have been raised over whether Pfizer will fulfil these obligations in full.

This development comes amid ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, with several multinational companies either downsizing or exiting the market entirely and many losing their jobs.

We need to properly document how desperate power seekers destroyed a once floristic economy and till date have no honour to leave the stage because they have captured the redundant citizens of that country

The industrial sector has been neglected for far too long.. I expected PBAT and his cabinent to deploy resources to protect our industries but seems it's still business as usual.
I've said it and will keep saying it that this pattern of focusing only on TRADE, neglecting manufacturing and Made-in-Nigeria products will cost us so much on the long run.. look at how US is shifting her priorities from 'business as usual' while Nigeria keeps getting it wrong.

These companies leaving have seen the lack of seriousness and lack of commitment to industrial sector growth in Nigeria.. Indigenous companies are closing down, foreign companies are shutting down, yet some individuals think it's ok to sit at WTO and be discussing Trade.. please what exactly are you trading? A nation trading only raw materials with zero products and services is on its way to poverty.
Like Fela said.. I sorry sorry o, I sorry for Nigeria.

These are the consequences of getting the wrong leadership to steer the affairs of a nation. No sane person or country will commit itself to investment its business in a country with well known criminals at the helm of affairs. The ease of doing business is still being strangulated by the constricting govt taxations, tariffs, and unfriendly policies.

Meanwhile, the useless government and its zombies are busy chasing investors and getting useless commitments while macro-economies are folding up and leaving Nigeria in droves.

Why now??

The job market is already Saturated...

This is bad... Although Tinibunomics is a killer, but these companies should reduce their staff or increase cost of products, instead of outrightly shutting down

Bola Tinubu is a certified failure.

His emergence have done more harm to the Yorubas than good.

After all the desperateness to become President, all he could do was appoint incompetent Yorubas into all critical positions to help him capture Nigerian state like Lagos and to collect more tax, now look at the end result angry

The corruption in Nigeria that people shy away from discussing is part of the problem... cost of power alone can run most industries down.
We predicted this long ago that Discos placing industries under band A just to milk them will affect our economy on the long run and it's already happening.

It's these big companies with names that we hear about, many have closed down.. instead of allowing technocrats to handle economy, politicians have hijacked everything. Put this one there, na my person...now look at the result.

"Meanwhile, challenges faced by local and multinational manufacturers in Nigeria have been power crisis, constant devaluation of naira, forex availability and stringent government policies.

-1). Unilever announced the exit of its home care and skin cleansing from Nigeria; in July 2023.
-2). Nigeria’s second-biggest drug producer and British pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria Plc, announced an end to manufacturing operations in Nigeria;
-3). French pharmaceutical multinational, Sanofi, announced its decision to quit Nigeria; in November,

-4). Equinor Nigeria Energy Company (ENEC), a Norwegian energy corporation announced the sale of its Nigerian operations, and

Which labour pains. There is a company around Freedom way, Ikate. Like 6-7 years ago, the company used to be full of activities. Then, they had at least 4 big coastal buses as staff bùs, many cars used to park inside and outside. They don't have signpost, so I wouldn't know what they do, but have different colours, like MTN building at Falomo, so I guess, they may be service providers. I have been passing that street recently and don't see much activities. May be they have shut down. Imagine how many families depend on those companies. Drive round, count how many To Let in various buildings around you. People like you may be collecting transport fares and you are here abusing. I weep for you. grin grin grin grin
