Oyo Govt Withdraws Criminal Charges Against Ooni’s Ex-Wife Naomi, Oriyomi Hamzat, School Principal Over Ibadan Stampede

The government of Oyo State has dropped the charges filed against the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Queen Naomi Silekunola, the owner of Agidigbo FM, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Abdullahi Fasasi.

The charges were initially slammed on the trio following the tragic stampede in December 2024 that resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children during a children’s festive party.

The defendants were visibly relieved, smiling and exchanging pleasantries after the trial on Thursday, signalling their release from the charges.

Oyo State’s Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, confirmed the decision after the court session, speaking to the media.

During a live broadcast on Facebook by SaharaReporters, Aikomo stated: “It was an unfortunate incident that led to the death of many. And you see, in law, whenever death occurs and the circumstances are not natural, the law will take its course. So the state responded by filing charges against the persons implicated in the investigation.

“In the course of doing that, we actually wanted to prosecute but the affected persons showed empathy. They showed compassion. And as far as human beings can do, they try to persuade the feelings of the affected parties. And the circumstance, we felt, the essence of prosecution is not to kill people or persecute them. It is in the interest of justice to discontinue these charges, and that is what happened today.”

This decision follows a lengthy legal process. Prior to this, the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan had granted bail to Naomi, Hamzat, and Fasasi. Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin delivered the ruling after the defendants had presented their bail applications.

Naomi was granted bail of N10 million with two sureties, while Hamzat and Fasasi were also granted bail on similar terms. The court also ordered that the suspects deposit their passports with the court and restricted them from giving interviews, limiting their public engagements.

The case began after the devastating stampede during a children’s event at Islamic High School, Bashorun, in December 2024, where dozens of young children lost their lives in a chaotic rush. The public and the victims’ families were left heartbroken by the tragic event, one of the most harrowing incidents in recent memory in Oyo State.

The prosecution team, led by the Attorney General of Oyo State, had initially opposed granting bail to the defendants, highlighting the seriousness of the charges and the need for justice for the victims. However, the defense team argued that the accused had cooperated with the investigation and did not pose a flight risk.

Governor Makinde had previously insisted that those responsible for the stampede must face trial but also expressed openness to granting bail during the proceedings.

that he made a U-turn.

Makinde goofed by turning the issue to a personal vendetta
rather than let it be between the police, prosecutors and the suspects.

He even went ahead to charge them with murder even though no competent prosecutor
would level such charge given the circumstance unless forced by political power.

In any case, the spurious charge of murder would have been thrown out by the court at the end of the day.

I guess Makinde want to avoid embarrassment by withdrawing the case earlier or
it is starting to affect his political future.

Some even went as far as saying because she left ooni she went there to do pepper them to show the king and people that she has money and she's doing well financially even after leaving the Palace.those are the kinds of evil people she was trying to help their kids

I want to believe there are people who need money for school fees,money to start a skill etc among your family members.if you Like no help your family members that you know,it is those ones that will abuse you tomorrow who no know you na him make una dey help you hear.

Even if your hands are scratching you and you have too much money in your hands but don't know what to do with it, spend it on your extended fami6 members or evangelism.enough of doing things for the poor who are largel6 ungrateful and entitled and will curse you the moment you stop giving without even caring what's going on in your own life

There's no way they way want to make it look, whether they got permit or not, whether there was stampede or not, whether there was security report or not, whether there was emergency response or not, whether there was investigation or not, whether there was justice or not, the government had a role to play in the event.

Humor me, Nigerian police will know about a protest without anyone informing them, they will even tell you they got intelligence report and arrive the route before organizers but when it comes to poor people's hangout, they can go and die.

Our president can anticipate violence in Rivers State but in the North, he reacts to terror. "I commiserate with the families" , "we sympathize with the people" and various condolence messages de their folder but if they want to grab power, they don't waste time, it's 110% security.
