Thinking of getting a PS5. Any suggestions for which might be better? I know there is a version that one needs to download the games online (no discs) and another version that uses discs... Which one would seem better in the long run when checked between how much it costs to buy a physical disc and download a game online

I'd recommend the pro if you have the extra funds. It'll last longer into the next gen era and plays better versions of newer games. There's no difference in performance between the ps5 slim and the standard ps5, just a size difference.
As for disc or no disc versions, depends on you really. Prices are not that different but you might be able to get used discs for cheaper after awhile and if you happen to get a rare disc, it can be sold for higher price in the future. If you're the type to get games as soon are they come out then it doesn't really matter anyway.
