Nigeria To Halt Importation Of Solar Panels by occfx(op): 8:58am On Mar 26, 2025
The federal government has announced plans to stop the importation of solar panels as part of efforts to boost local production and drive Nigeria’s clean energy transition.

Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, disclosed in an interview during the unveiling of the NEV T6 electric buses in Abuja recently. He said the move aligns with Presidential Executive Order No. 5, which seeks to promote local content in science, engineering, and technology.

According to him, the country is already making significant investments in renewable energy infrastructure, adding that Nigeria has the capacity to meet its solar energy demands locally, with organisations like the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) playing a key role in solar panel production.

Nnaji also projected that, with the expansion of local solar panel manufacturing, more Nigerian homes and institutions would transition to off-grid power solutions

He said: “We have lithium in abundance here in Nigeria, so Mr. President is already taking action. We are adding value to our raw materials. The lithium we have here will be processed and used as batteries for these vehicles.”

As for me, only the importation of foodstuffs should not be banned.

Nigerian solar panels on top of your roofhuh

That's a very big risk na.
Moreover you don't need to half importation to boost local production. Make locally produced goods more preferable and people will go for it
Re: Nigeria To Halt Importation Of Solar Panels by mrvitalis(m): 9:06am On Mar 26, 2025
I am now total convinced that APC just want Nigerians to suffer intentionally

Do you have the capacity to produce solar? ... Development of such capacity would take 10 years really

Any Nigeria solar company who can't produce cheaper solar panels with cheaper labour, cheap power, and raw materials is not serious

This is same rubbish we did in poultry, Brazil produce chicken at 700 dollars per ton... We are at 3000 dollars plus per ton

Protectionist have never worked in history n its only attractive to uneducated people

Okay. Before it was 70% of Nigerians living in darkness due to PHCN and their uselessness but now even the rich are about to be plunged into darkness by force cool

God wan punish this one

We stopped importation of rice & local rice with poor quality became expensive than imported rice with high quality.

Who tells you that we can manufacture solar panels at cheaper price here in Nigeria?

Even imported petrol is cheaper thanovally refined

Government cannot provide us power supply still wanna block our access to power supply despite the fact that solar is not cheap

It seems this government is mad
Re: Nigeria To Halt Importation Of Solar Panels by onatisi(m): 9:30am On Mar 26, 2025
This is what they should have started, bringing in the Chinese, telling them to set up factories in Nigeria to manufacture these panels and other solar gadgets, give them to federal workers at subsidised rates, it will flood the market and many will have alternative power supply.
But on a second thought, they can come tomorrow and say they want to start taxing people with solar power supply oo angry

Lol una ban importation of Rice say na Local way now Local price dey compete with smuggled one...

Mak una no start jargons..

I will go for my Canadian Panel anytime any day...

Una no fit force me to buy local,..
Re: Nigeria To Halt Importation Of Solar Panels by onatisi(m): 9:34am On Mar 26, 2025
You have a point, but the quality can be upgraded, the solar street light i bought in Ghana that was manufactured there like 4 years ago is still functioning very well, although it was more expensive than the Chinese one, but the imported ones stopped working after a year. I regretted not buying more of the Ghana-made, went back to buy more after some years, I was told the company packed up because people were not patronizing them enough, and the imported was much cheaper.

If the Nigerian made solar panels are so good, let them export it and make some dollar profit instead of creating a new cabal in renewable energy. You need to see the way people are ditching useless NEPA for renewables.

Very soon Nigeria will be the most renewable energy reliant country in the globe.
Re: Nigeria To Halt Importation Of Solar Panels by bamosagie(m):
Very funny way of thinking, how many solar panel companies do we have presently..... is it not better to give grants and tax waver to companies in order to encourage production instead banning importation that will help the companies compare and improve on the quality of their product.
Please no one should say they are protecting the non-existing local market.
Up till date, Nigerian cable is preferred by builders and technicians to imported ones. Encourage quality and you don't have to worry about imported goods. Competition is needed from improvement and growth.

In other words Nigerian company are not capable of producing original Solar panel Abi

That also means construction experts from Nigeria like you are also not qualified enough to handle jobs too na
undecided

Thats my fear too. They will form cabal and start unionizing to keep poor man down. Petrol has almost gone burst and electricity isnt so easy to muscle in on.
The senaible way out is to incentivise local production intelligently.

Dont blam him. People now create panels of 350w and stamp 650W on them to reap customers. Something even China or the Chinese dont dare do. Nigerians are to be constantly suspected and regulated.

Are these people mad or insanity is beckoning?

I need to send this minister an email so he knows how daft this is.

The cost of production is high in Nigeria because the factors of production are absent.

For instance, Nigeria doesn't have stable power to drive production. While Dangote had to build a power station to power his refinery, other manufacturers are resorting to diesel generators to power their engines. In the end, the consumers bear the brunt.

Tinubu is clearly clueless about how to fix electricity issue in Nigeria because he hasn't taken convincing steps that indicate willingness to tackle the issue.

Nothing concerns stable power with cost of production

There is no business you can mention now that if ran on diesel 100% that cost of power would be more than 10% cost of production... Name one

All refinery have power plant to make use of the propane gas... It's cheaper for dangote to produce his own power than buy from national grid

It's good but trust Nigerians to inflate the price soon and probably make fake panels too
Re: Nigeria To Halt Importation Of Solar Panels by Ejebleje:
Unfortunate to even consider such move at this stage. How old ,how productive and how efficient is the production process of local solar manufacturing companies in Nigeria? In a country with energy crisis where citizens generate their own power, there should be low or no duties on importation, and government should even reward people who generate their own power as is done in some other countries. What sort of people lead us in this country?

This is the reason why they want to ban the importation.
More and more residences and business are going fully or partially solar, removing themselves from the Grid. Ordinarily this should be good news to The DISCOs as demand is low..however due to their gross inefficiency, estimated billing is their bread and butter , so with more people off the grid, lesser revenue is being made.
By the time 30% of their customers are on Solar, demand for power is low, and their revenue plummet that's why they're rushing to FG to save them from Solar
They once tried to introduce a form of informal tax on residences with Solar installation, going from house to house searching for Solar panel installation and serving them loss of revenue notice..the reaction they got from people put paid to that
So this is how they intend to keep us in darkness..
Ban the importation and stifle the market.
They know local production can never match demand in a million years..and definitely inferior products at inflated costs..another rice dilemma.

I think the ban is a wrong move but as usual, you jump the gun.
Where exactly did you pull your 10 years from?
It will take less than a year to train a complete noob with proper background.
This isn't some next generation chips manufacturing that requires PhDs to master.
Majority of those involved in manufacturing solar panels we import are Chinese high school graduates.

BTW, Nigeria already has many solar panel manufacturers.
The issue is that they may not be able to meet supply needs and will also be more expensive.

Instead of offering incentives to people interested in setting up solar farm, una wan halt importation.

I hope local production go start and meet local demand before una halt importation.
