In a bid to alleviate overcrowding in Nigeria’s correctional facilities, four state governors have granted pardons to over 120 inmates across various custodial centres in their states in the last three months.

The pardon is part of ongoing efforts to reduce congestion in the nation’s correctional system.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, on January 1 released seven inmates, and pardoned one on parole.

Similarly, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State and his Plateau State counterpart, Caleb Mutfwang, extended mercy to 56 inmates on January 1.

Also, Governor Lucy Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State on January 12 and February 25 pardoned 83 inmates.

Recent data from the Nigerian Correctional Service indicates that inmate population has reached 79,669, far surpassing the system’s capacity of just over 50,000.

Of this number, 52,771 are awaiting trial on serious charges such as armed robbery, murder, and culpable homicide, which require extensive investigations and lengthy court proceedings.

The NCoS Comptroller-General, Sylvester Nwakuche, recently stated that the number of death row inmates had increased from 3,590 in September 2024 to 3,688 in March 2025, highlighting the persistent challenges of congestion within Nigeria’s prison system.

Nwakuche also pointed out that state governors’ reluctance to either carry out executions or commute death sentences to life imprisonment is a significant factor contributing to the overcrowding.

“State governors are part of our challenges. They refuse to execute inmates on the death row; neither do they commute their death sentence to life imprisonment,” he said.

You don't know how the pardon works.

First degree murder convicts hardly get pardon just like that. The highest they usually get is the commuting the death sentence to life imprisonment.

You can be sure that many of the prisoners who get state pardons are those who committed non-violent crimes or whose violent crimes were not premeditated, even if they were intentional, like voluntary manslaughter.

No state governor will pardon a murder convict without discretion or without having received a clemency plea from the convict.

Only?
Your cousins up North are using their State FAAC allocations to rehabilitate and insert repentant BH terrorists into the society and all 4 Southern States could do is 120?
No encouragement for you, shame on you.
On the other hand, don't you think if you Governors really wanted to reduce crowding in prisons, it would be wiser and cheaper to sign those execution warrants for those on deathrow?
They've been waiting for death for 26 years now and feeding fat off the FAAC allocations.
None of you Governors apart from Edo state in the South has signed any execution order, which is a dereliction of your duty and you can/should be impeached for it.
We are campaigning for a case at the Supreme court whereby FAAC allocations will be blocked like Rivers State until you perform the duty you have been elected for by signing those warrants of execution.
Shame!!!!
This 120 will fully return back to the system by 30th March 2026.
Starting next week, the 1st ten will be back in police cell.

Northern governor's rehabilitate and free large number of hardcore terrorist. While all the southern governors can free is 120,that's wickedness.

Southern governors should key in on the parole thing, they shld rehabilitate and free repentant inmates instead of this there weak amnesty program,or they can run both.
As for high number of awaiting trial govt should offer dem plea bargain deal so as to bring and end to cases and reduce there numbers
