Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the payment of gratuities owed to pensioners since 2012, a move many say will address the long-standing plight of retired civil servants in the state.

In a statement on Monday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the state government has commenced the disbursement of N1 billion as the first batch of payments, fulfilling a commitment to clear the backlog inherited from previous administrations.

Okpebholo emphasised his administration’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of retired civil servants who have dedicated their years of service to the state.

The statement added, “For over a decade, many of our retirees have suffered due to the non-payment of their gratuities. This administration is putting an end to that hardship.

“I have approved the release of N1 billion for the first phase of payments, and we will not rest until all outstanding entitlements are cleared.”

The governor reiterated that his administration is committed to restoring the dignity of pensioners by ensuring that they receive their due benefits without further delay.

“We recognise the sacrifices made by our retirees, and it is unacceptable that they have had to wait this long for what is rightfully theirs.

“Our administration will not only clear these arrears but will also put measures in place to ensure such delays do not happen in the future,” Okpebholo stated.

He reaffirmed that his administration’s goal is to clear all outstanding gratuities in phases, ensuring that retirees enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The governor further assured that the disbursement process would be transparent and fair, with pensioners receiving payments in batches based on a structured verification process.

“This is just the beginning. We will not abandon our pensioners. We are determined to ensure that those who served Edo State diligently are treated with the respect and care they deserve,” the governor said.

I will never understand why state governors are always so reluctant to pay pensions and gratuity.

Some will even owe for years, and won't even bother settling the accumulated arrears.

Most Nigerian governors are the biggest clogs in the wheel of this nation's progress.

It is a good move, even though it is to calm down the political tension in the state.12 years when most of the beneficiaries are dead, while politicians are earning theirs before the time

APC propaganda.

Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, has indeed approved the payment of gratuities to pensioners in the state. Here are some key developments ¹ ² ³:
- *Payment of 29 years gratuity backlog*: In October 2023, Obaseki approved the payment of a 29-year backlog of gratuity for pensioners in the Edo State Local Government Staff Pension Board. A screening exercise was conducted for pensioners who retired between 1979 and 2008.
- *Gratuity payment for over 400 ex-staff*: In December 2023, Obaseki approved gratuity payment for almost 400 former government workers in the state. This move was part of his administration's efforts to prioritize the welfare of retirees and clear the backlog of gratuity payments.
- *13th-month salary for pensioners*: Obaseki also approved the payment of a 13th-month salary to pensioners in the state, which was set to be paid on December 27, 2023.
- *Free health insurance for pensioners*: The governor has also initiated a free health insurance scheme for pensioners in the state, with the enrollment process starting in December 2023.
- *Ongoing efforts to clear gratuity backlog*: As recently as October 2024, the Edo State Government was still working to clear the backlog of gratuity payments, with a screening exercise scheduled for pensioners who retired in 2011.

Not all of them ooo, but many of them have stolen their gratuity while in service.

Reason why corruption will never end. When you know that after retirement, no gratuity, won't you steal while in service
