INEC Clarifies Why Sam Olumekun Is Acting National Chairman by Thescrutinyng(op): 6:49pm On Apr 09, 2025
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified why it designated one of its National Commisssioners, Sam Olumekun as the Acting Chairman of the electoral commission.

Rumours were rife on Tuesday that the Commission’s national chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has been sacked by President Bola Tinubu, a claim that has been debunked by the presidency.

In a statement on its social media handles on Wednesday, INEC had posted that Olumekun, the acting chairman received a high-level delegation of Labour party, led by Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

“A high-level delegation of the Labour Party (LP), led by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, today Wednesday visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to discuss key developments within the party.

During the visit, Governor Otti formally presented a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court judgment concerning the party’s leadership. He noted that the meeting was aimed at fostering clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.

The delegation was received by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, and other National Commissioners. Both parties engaged in discussions centered on enhancing collaboration and reinforcing democratic values.

Mr. Olumekun reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the rule of law in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities”.

The statement led to further confusion as many Nigerians were asking when Mahmood was replaced with Olumekun, the acting chairman.

But in message to journalists, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman said Olumekun only stood in for Prof. Yakubu who is currently in Gambia to attend the meeting of ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC).

“Kindly note, dear Colleagues, that National Commissioner Sam Olumekun mni is the Acting Chairman of INEC at the moment. The Hon Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has travelled to the Gambia to attend the ECONEC (ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions) meeting”.

Yoruba people must be mindful of the precedence Tinubu is setting. They need to start speaking up. This is not how to run a multicultural society like Nigeria.

You cannot have your people in all the key positions in the country. If they say they are educated, education should mean something. Appointments should be spread across the diverse country.

Even the western world is promoting inclusivity, that's why a black man could be the President of America! Every tribe in Nigeria has qualified and honest people. Leadership is transient.

Why acting chairman when Mahmud is away for a conference? The same way the insanely lying government lied shamelessly about the Tarooed Lagbaja demise until the current COAS came on board. Same way the INEC impasse is unfolding.

Toh
When people complain they tag you IPOB.

Judges are Yoruba, Electoral umpire is Yoruba.

How can there be fairness and justice?

But the yorubas are gleefully applauding it.

You are not smart to know that the president coming from yoruba is the reason that hasn't been possible, how many president has appointed an INEC chairman from his geopolitical region? Just answer the question

Tinubu exposed who Yorubas truly are.

They should enjoy it while it last.

But I don't want to hear or see any protest in Lagos or any Yoruba state to complain anything about government in Nigeria after Tinubu leaves office.

Yorubas will think Tinubu loves them, but Tinubu is doing more harm to Yorubas than good and by the time they will realize it, it maybe too late.

Best bet, Tinubu should make sure he restructures Nigeria fully or divide it before he leaves office if not lipsrsealed

Why not Nigerians tell themselves the truth and allow politicians decide among themselves who’s fit to loot the nation instead of deceiving themselves with elections and casting votes.

No body wins any election in Nigeria with votes… except in Abia State.

Why not we stop having elections because it’s a useless exercise.

Let the politician with the highest purchasing power enter the looting office and continue where the last person stopped.

Until Nigerians decide to wake up and chase these people out of the country.
