Green Light for Green Line

The Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) took a significant leap forward today with the public unveiling of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green Line alignment at a scoping workshop.

The 68-kilometer rail line will feature 17 stations and is strategically designed to connect with the existing Blue Line at Marina, creating a vital interchange for commuters.

The revealing of the alignment marks a key stage in the development of the Green Line, as it allows for the commencement of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies. Attendees at the scoping workshop were provided with a detailed overview of the project and its alignment.

Lagos Gears Up for Green Line Rail: Alignment Revealed at Scoping Workshop

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) today conducted a crucial scoping workshop for the state-backed Green Line rail project and unveiled the 68-kilometer rail route alignment to the public.

This event marks a significant step in the preparation for the project's implementation, as it initiates the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Resettlement Policy Framework processes.

The workshop witnessed the attendance of key stakeholders, including a representative of the Minister for the Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Director of Acquisition, Revocation and Compensation Matters, Mr. Wale Ojutiku, Deputy Director of Land Resources, Mr. Dapo Ogunlewe, and representatives from the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources. Traditional chiefs and security officials were also present, alongside Mr. Daniel Soderstrom, a Swedfund Advisor on Social and Impact Assessment, representing the ESIA funders.

The Honorable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, informed that the government planned to complete the entire project rather than in phases.

He appealed to property owners to regularize their building approval documents and warned that failure to do so may be dire.

Representing the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Technical Adviser for Rail Transport, Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga underscored the vital role the Green Line project will play in improving transportation for Lagos residents. He assured the audience that individuals affected by the project would be duly compensated and that local communities would benefit from employment opportunities during the construction phase.

Community leaders in attendance voiced their strong support for the Green Line, highlighting its potential to foster transit-oriented development and alleviate traffic congestion on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. They also emphasized the importance of effective traffic management and the development of alternative routes during the construction period, as well as maintaining clear communication channels with the public.

Other notable attendees included representatives from the Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), the Victoria Island and Iru Residents Association (VIIRA), and traditional chiefs from Eti-Osa, Awoyaya, Alasia, Iranla and other affected communities demonstrating the broad interest and anticipated impact of the Green Line rail project across various communities in Lagos.

ESIA consultants Sectec-Greenstad Consulting Limited, led by Dr. Mariame Mboup Fall and project contractors China Harbour Engineering Company Limited were also present.

To put your comment into perspective, the Green Line is divided into two phases, with a total of 17 stations. The first phase terminating at Sangotedo will be having 10 stations, while the second phase has 7 stations. The entire stretch was never designed to have 10 stations.

LAMATA originally proposed these 7 lines and a monorail during the administration of Governor Bola Tinubu, but there have been some modifications since then.

1) Blue line: Okokomaiko-Marina
2) Red Line: Agbado-MMIA-Marina
3) Green Line: Lekki Airport-Marina
4) Yellow Line: Otta-Iddo
5) Purple Line: Redeemed Camp-Ojo
6) Brown Line: Mile 12 - Marina
7) Orange Line: Redeemed Camp-Marina

*) Monorail connecting Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki Phase 1.

Changes:

The Yellow Line will now go from Otta to the National Theater.

The Orange Line will now go from Ikeja, through Alausa to Ikorodu.

There will be no Brown Line.

Depends.

Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, maybe Umuahia, Port Harcourt, even Calabar(because calabar is trying to be a tourist hub), may need such things.

But as we say, it costs money either way.

To decongest traffic you need alternatives.
They are charging fares and hopefully with a change in mindset and it being reliable people would forgo their vehicles and take the train.
