Many Nigerian universities honouring illiterates, persons without worthy character – Jega

By Chidimma C. Okeke

The Pro-Chancellor & Chairman of Council, Usumanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof Attahiru Jega has said Nigerian universities are certificating illiterates and awarding degrees to many persons without worthy character.

Jega stated this while speaking as the Chairman of the ongoing 14th Convocation lecture of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja on Friday.

President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina, delivered the keynote address at the lecture.

Jefa said convocation is for the graduation of students who are found worthy in learning and character after four or five years of studies in Universities.

“Every time we mention found worthy in learning and character, people tend to wonder whether learning and character necessarily go together, well they do not, one can be learned but with no good character, moreover one can be certificated without learning anything and yet have good character,” he said.

“The expectation is that university graduates are positioned for the ideal of having both learning and character, now this ideal has been approximated in Nigeria Universities in the past and now a mare aspiration.

“In most cases, our universities offer certification to illiterates and awarding degrees in many cases to persons without worthy character. ”

He said the purpose of convocation lecture is to inspire and motivate students , faculty and staff to celebrate milestones and address important issues of ills relevant to the academic, community and society at large.

Referring to the Guest Lecturer, he said Adesina is an outstanding Nigerian doing the country and Africans proud.

Very on point.

This has come to my notice in recent times too.

We can only blame that on our educational system and Nigerian Govt.

Good characters comes from homes not from Universities . Westerns Education's doesn't Teach more morals and values as our cultures which many don't recognise any more . You can be educated and remain not useful BCS Universities don't Teach " Common Sense and morals .

Coming from a Prof who as the electoral board chairman, went out of his way to make a stark illiterate with all sorts of proven anti democratic habits, the president of the country.., this is very rich..
Folks should know that principles, just as "good" or "bad" are static natural laws..

Looks like our brothers from the far north suffer from selective amnesia. They conveniently choose when to see evil or not. They only see corrupt politicians in the south. Only feel outraged when their brothers are killed down south but don't bother about the killings in the north. Now this..

Which one is worse; honouring illiterates or making an illiterate ijiot a president!?
You tell me..

Even the so-called prof. Mahmood Yakubu who helped Bola Ahmed Tunibu to grabbed power is worse than a cow in a cattle ranch in Katsina

So true. I might understand the original aim but then we've manipulated the process that it no longer serves the aim.

For example, I think it's good to award an honorary degree maybe in business Administration to a seasoned uneducated successful business man as he's proven by practice to be a professor in the trade or maybe a seasoned mechanic etc.

Definitely not our corrupt politicians

Jega, you’re likely aware that the majority of those you refer to as illiterates are predominantly from the northern region of the country.

And we have professors and highly educated citizens, that don't have the courage to stand up for the truth. People that carry "big" certificates, national honors, but lacking in principle, integrity and morals.

Thank God for that exemplary Professor that God used to liberate Abia State. That's an example of what Nigeria, as a nation, would have been if they so called educated ones that were made election umpires had morals.

Nobody rigged GEJ out. He performed woefully and was voted out despite heavy rigging in states like rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom.

The ones that actually excel... Those with great brains and good characters, what becomes of them?!!

How don't they end up with top jobs and the key positions in government?!!

Has that not also come to your notice?!!

That the leaders you elected, including the hypocrite Jega, constantly overlook the best among our graduates when gifting appointments and key positions!

That meritocracy has become alien to this nation from Public to the Private sectors!

That the places where our best brains are appreciated are outside this country!

Yes, universities are not churning out quality graduates anymore, but that's not as deplorable as the rot and corruption in the system which denies merit in the favor of nepotism and quota system.
