Nigerian Army Worries As South East Youths Shun Recruitment by ijustdey(op): 11:09am On Apr 12, 2025
By Nnanna Nwogu

The Nigerian Army has expressed concern that youths from the South East are shunning recruitment into the army, highlighting the need for sensitisation.

The team leader of the Year 2025 Nigerian Army Recruitment Awareness Team, Brigadier General Chima Ekeator, who was in Umuahia on Wednesday, stated that they came to sensitise youths from the South East on the importance of taking up the slots allocated to the region during the Nigerian Army recruitment.

Speaking during his visit to the state governor, Brigadier General Chima Ekeator noted that the leadership of the Nigerian Army had observed that the recruitment slots allocated to Southeastern states were barely filled by applicants from the region. Consequently, the team was sent to sensitise youths on the need to take advantage of these opportunities.

Ekeator expressed regret that the region is losing out during recruitment exercises, citing an example from last year when Abia State was allocated nearly 200 slots, but only 53 were taken up. He added that similar situations were observed in other Southeastern states. He assured that the Nigerian Army is working to change this narrative.

While thanking the governor for the assistance provided so far, Ekeator informed that the team had conducted town hall meetings with traditional rulers and mayors to ensure the message reached the target audience.

Responding, the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, stated that the government would establish the necessary structures to ensure that those within the recruitment age bracket are sensitised. He assured, “We will help to make sure that Abians, especially the youths, embrace this opportunity.”

According to him, “We are going to set up the necessary structures to ensure that those within the targeted age bracket see the need to be part of the general progress and vision of the Nigerian Army, to ensure adequate security in this nation.

“We will also pass the information to youths within the catchment group targeted for this exercise. One thing we can assure you is that, going forward, this sensitisation will become more regular.”

Otti commended the Nigerian Army for its efforts to ensure that the Southeast is fully integrated into the Nigerian Army, noting that the institution has continued to engage with local stakeholders, including mayors and traditional institutions. He added, “I want to deeply appreciate you. We are quite impressed by the professionalism that the Nigerian Army has continued to display.”

Otti emphasised the importance of security to the economic development of a nation, stating, “No matter what you invest, no matter the level of infrastructure you provide, if there is no conducive environment, which is a by-product of sound security, even the people would be scared to come close and would not appreciate the level of infrastructure in this place.”

He commended the Nigerian Army for its sacrifice and commitment to ensuring that every part of the country is included. He maintained that everyone has a role to play in achieving the goal of sensitising Abia youths to enlist in the Nigerian Army.

The South East does not trust the Nigerian Army as an institution

We see the Nigerian Army as nothing more than a tool of oppression, suppression, thuggery, brutality, abuse of power and human rights abuse

Recruitment into the Nigerian Army will always be low in the South-East.There are very few Igbos interested in fighting for Nigeria

Edit

What is actually shocking is that an organisation that has systematically erected checkpoints all over Igbo land, commiting every crime from extortion, torture, brutality and human rights abuse to Igbos, is wondering why Igbos don't want to join the same organisation?

Are these people insane?
Re: Nigerian Army Worries As South East Youths Shun Recruitment by Racoon(m):
Abeg keep away. Marginalization didn't start today. The current military institutions in Nigeria have long been bastardized. No sane person should go and die for nothing. Hence no motivation to enlist.

They are playing Mind games on Igbos. They actually refused to recruit Igvo people into the military. Then they will come to the media to shout that Igbos are not applying. I have 8 friends from Imo State that applied, they all got rejected.

They do it on purpose because they know if the release press statements like this, many Igbos on social media will say Igbos are not interested. They are afraid that Igbos will topple the government if they are given weapons

Do they work by quotas? When systemic corruption is finally recognized, of course nobody will want to waste his/her time. Make them chop their positions.

I remember reading about one Korean nationalist who when Korea was a part of the empire of Japan advised Korean youth to join the Japanese army

His reasoning was that when Korea became free it would have a ready made trained cadre of soldiers .

And the chap was not fond of Japan by the way.

Many listened to him. That is why by 1948 , both the dprk and the rok had standing armies. And even advanced training institutions.

It might be a good thing for a biafranist to join the army. Just saying.

Reform the military and you won't need to beg people to join.

At the first sign of trouble they run away. Why recruit them? grin

Zik, Ojukwu and Kanu all ran after chestb3ating.

In 1966, Victor Banjo, a Yoruba man led their BiaBia Army after all the men ran away.

In 2025, grown wo-MEN, hide under their beds every Monday, shivering because of a fellow man farting continents away grin

No wonder their yamleggahs chase Yoruba guys for more testosterone grin

It got them to the highest echelon of the military where they had the opportunity to launch the first coup that this country hasn't recovered from till date. They need to put themselves in similar positions to try and launch another coup, maybe the country will celebrate them this time around

Bloody coupists

The Governors of SE and SS should tell their citizens the truth. Igbos are not wanted in any leadership positions in Nigeria. Otherwise, Peter Obi would be president. Every other region has had their piece of the rulership, with some doing two times.
Since Igbos cannot rule, they should not be seen defending the bigot rulers. Nigeria Army under Tinubu is full of bigotry and tribalism. If you an Igboman and join the military be sure to die young because they will send you go to sambisa and LakeChad, where your colleagues might also be ISWAP sympathizers. The army now have thousands of "repentant" Boko Haram members. If you shoot their members, be sure to get friendly 🔥. It is your family back home that will suffer.

It truly does not make sense.

What will an Igbo young man or woman benefit from joining the Nigerian army?

How much is the pay?

What is the realistic career progression like?

How will he be better off than his kinsman who focused on learning a trade or craft?

Who wants to sacrifice sons that will be sent to go fight terrorists and bandits, while politicians and their fronts are making money from the insecurity, their own children living comfortably abroad?

Have a relative who signified interest last year, to join the Army as a recruit. I discouraged him, got him enrolled for apprenticeship in shoe making in Aba and assured him that at the end of his apprenticeship, I will help him set up his own.

When in the past years your uncles were intentionally marginalising the south-east in terms of recruitment into the armed forces, where were tribal turncoats like you? At a time in this countrys history, folks from the south-east had to change their names to northern names and claim to be from Bauchi and Kaduna to get recruited. You turned the army against the people of the SE, and the people lost interest. It doesn't take away the fact that the marginalisation of the south-east during recruitment exercises into the armed forces has been enforce since the end of the Nigeria - Biafra war.

So, una no wan marginalize southeast again when it comes to dying?. Dem no wan do, rest. Southeasters obviously have better things to do with their lives now. They are trading and making bank, studying and breaking records all over the world, and leading where their peers are struggling.
Una dey find who your boko haram go use do practice shooting. Nonsense
