Nigerians mostly have shitty taste in music anyway. And it's gotten worse since the 2010's.

- Banky W would have stood no chance of rising to the top today.

- Johnny Drille would barely get airplay today if he'd done "Wait For Me" today instead of in 2015.

- Nonso Amadi barely gets a listen today. Blessing Tangban who is a quality artiste never gets recognised but Yemi Alade who sings "No time for tumbo tumbo" gets all of the streams.

Bez Idakula who is the king of Nigerian alté has to focus on doing music gigs for special shows.

You forced the suave early 2010s version of Praiz to do shit music to survive. SKALES used to spit bars in the late 2000s now he does shitting music for streams. "Stay", "Rich and Famous", "Stupid Song" etc by Praiz are timeless and world class.

Munachi Abii held her own against other rappers on Banky W's 2010 megahit "Lagos Party (Remix)". Her next releases got no recognition.

CAPital F.E.M.I would rival Joe and Craig David anyday but he gets no attention.

Tems had to stay away before you lots force her to do shit music. Great artiste. I listen to her whole discography everyday.

Asa tried a comeback but you all ignored her. She had to do "Manyana" to get any kind of recognition.

I feel Bnxn can do better. He writes great lyrics. He prefers the slow tempo. But if he goes full Tems or Bez, you'd all ignore him.

Are you just knowing this, ogbeni go and listen to seyi vibes incantation your body will calm
I have always known we listen to beat in this part of the world, when I told people I don't like rema they called me hater

I think people would generally prioritize music they can vibe to before those that stimulate them intellectually or that have lyrical depth...if an artiste can combine both, great (2Face is a good example here), but if it's a versus between intellectual and lyrical depth heavy music, the former would always win, and I don't think it's entirely a Nigerian thing.

The quality of our vibe heavy or lyrically heavy music would on average be inferior to what you get from countries where the literacy and educational levels are better.

Beat, then rhymes/lamba before song depth and it's a trend that isn't necessarily unique to Nigeria.

Maybe Lagos is understated, but you see that Ebonyi?? cheesy cheesy cheesy

Ebonyi pass Rivers? grin

These politicians will not kill us with lamba

Fun fact: First bank has about 5 branches in Ebonyi state. Not a yardstick though, but I wonder the kind of commercial activities they did, that raised 6 billion
The data is actually referring to IGR generated by local governments and not IGR generated by state.

What that means in essence is that LGs in Ebonyi makes more internally generated revenue than local governments in Rivers state. It can happen if the LG chairmen in Rivers state don't declare accurately the IGR they make while Ebonyin LGs do theirs diligently.

Another thing is most of the oil facilities in Rivers state may not be obliged to pay any form of rates and fees to Local governments.

And I am simply asking what LGs in Ebonyi raised 6 billion?

Rivers does not have only Oil producing facilities as it's business. PH is far bubbling than the whole Ebonyi put together.

6 billion indeed

I'd rather be frozen alive than deliberately searching out a Rema song. If I had to choose between listening to Tem's 14 songs released so far for the next 12 months and all of the chart-topping shit artistes on Nigerian charts, Temilade is an easy choice. I could die to her lesser known "Looku Looku" released in 2017 when nobody knew her and I'd die happy and peaceful.

I could take Johnny Drille's 2016 to 2018 discography lost at sea and I'd still feel connected to humanity.
I'd take Bez's "Supersun" album on a journey into a subterranean cave and I won't feel lonely.

Quality music mentally stimulates, and because it has great replay value, you are constantly mentally/intellectually stimulated.

Maybe a little harsh but I've always judged people (women especially) by their choice of music. For most parts, it's been a good yardstick.
The best women I've been intimate with had/have great music taste. Music which causes them to introspect, and introspective women are more loving, selfless and considerate.

I don't have a dog in this fight but saying Edo women aren't beautiful is like saying, sun doesn't shine in the Sahara Desert.
Also, a lot is happening in Kwara we tend to conflate lowcost of living with lack of economic activities. Kwara is a border state and a lot of business activities are taking place, the conservative nature of the people makes it look nothing is happening on the economic front.

Governor Ododo Unveils Mining Equipment as Kogi Secures 15 Mining Licenses

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has officially unveiled the state’s new mining equipment as he announced the acquisition of fifteen mining license by the government.

Governor Ododo made the announcement during the official unveiling of the state's new mining equipment at the Muhammadu Buhari Square in Lokoja on Friday.

He said the unveiling of the equipment and acquisition of licenses will officially launch Kogi into the league of states taking advantage of solid minerals development, and marked the beginning of a new phase in the state's economic transformation.

The Governor assured that the 15 mining licenses will boost the state's solid minerals development sector.

Ododo also noted that Kogi State is blessed with vast mineral deposits, including gold, lithium, limestone, coal among over 30 other solid minerals in commercial quantities which remain largely untapped.

“This is a strategic move to harness our natural resources and reduce our reliance on federal allocations. The 15 licenses secured will allow Kogi to begin large-scale exploration and mining, ensuring sustainable economic growth,” the Governor stated.

He further emphasized that the state is committed to creating job opportunities and improving the livelihoods of its people through mining, noting that the equipment will facilitate the efficient extraction of resources.

The Governor reaffirmed that Kogi State is poised to become a key player in Nigeria’s mining industry, adding that the state is committed to tapping into the full potential of its natural resources and has chosen to shape its own future through the mining initiative to boost internally generated revenue rather than relying on federal allocations.

“We are ready to harness the full potential of our natural resources. Kogi will no longer wait for federal allocations but will take its future into its own hands through this mining initiative,” he added.

In his remarks, the commissioner for Solid Mineral and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, shared the state's vision for the mining sector, describing it as a key revenue-generating sector.

He outlined the need for robust policies, equipment, and mining licenses to effectively tap into the solid minerals development sector.

“Being a major player in the mining sector requires equipment, laws, and policies. We are prepared to meet these requirements," he stated.

The Commissioner confirmed that the Kogi State government, through the Kogi State Solid Mineral Processing Company Limited had already secured 15 mining licenses, a step he noted will allow the state to begin solid mineral exploration immediately.

Rivers and Lagos may be understated.

The LG chairmen there may be focusing on making the money and chopping it by themselves so it doesn't get reported. Maybe Ebonyin is not blowing lamba but Rivers and Lagos not declaring enough..

Probably this think piece I just happened on posted about two years ago fully captures the nexus between our music choices today and the state of the nation: https://www.nairaland.com/7413121/nigerians-irregular-tastes-music .

Begin commenting on serious topical issues of nation-building amongst young Nigerian and in a few hours, it'd be watered down to "'cruise". Heck! If the protesters of EndSARS hadn't been shot at to stoke the ire of the youth, it was already devolving to street rallies.

Don't take my word for it. Go check out EndSARS videos. It was barely serious and for photo ops until the government foolishly shot at the protesters.

Our investment in intellectually unstimulating music mirrors our attitude to issues of national concern. I bet the reason why some of us debate pressing sociopolitical and economic issues on this thread is, outside of here, on the wider social media, most young persons are not interested in these discourses.

That's why Fisayo Sombo who is Nigeria's most consistent investigative journalist in recent years barely gets attention but a drama king like VeryDark-whoever who doesn't do due diligence but thrives on scandals gets all of the attention.

That's why Fisayo exposing Nigerian customs gets no attention but VeryDarkPerson facing off with Nollywood actresses gets all the headlines.

Bro, calm down.

I don't know why I read your post and saw a vein throbbing in your neck. grin

Taste is subjective. Asake put it best when he sang,

"Wetin you love o, no be wetin I love o, wetin I love I go do am with all my heart o"

On a serious note, I think the music landscape has changed and evolved over the years.. These days songs are shorter with most songs having a duration of <3 minutes.

Also, our music consumption behaviour has changed as people now have shorter attention spans and consume content in quick short bursts. Think Instagram, TikTok etc. Even YouTube had to incorporate YouTube Shorts to their platform in recognition of this consumption pattern.

Additionally, the world is now musically globalized with streaming platforms hosting millions of artistes and songs. So competition don dey and consumers have a plethora of choices. I mean, if a song is not doing it for me in the first 20 seconds, na to press skip to the next track. No time to waste time.

The country is f^¢<king hard so Nigerians will typically gravitate towards music that lifts their mood and is easy to vibe to, hence the fast upbeat tempo of most afrobeats songs. Even our Gospel musicians have caught on to this and now release upbeat danceable songs to be relevant.

Ain't no way I'm listening to a Johnny Drille R&B song when I can vibe to Shallipopi's Laho or Fido's Joy is coming that will make me dance and forget my troubles momentarily grin

Artistes too are now more focused on commercialization and make the type of music that will sell to make money. That's why songs have become shorter and more catchy.

Conclusively, it's not about bad taste, it’s just how the industry and audience have shifted to meet the times.

Kwara was the first place I saw a shopping mall in the heart of the capital and close to the airport, having empty stores looking for tenants. The next state I saw that was Ebonyi.

How can someone with any knowledge of music claim that CAPital F.E.M.I would rival Joe and Craig David any day? Is it the same Kenny’s Music Capital F.E.M.I again?

Then you claim in the same post that Skales used to spit bars—how? The same Mukulu Mukeke Skales, or is there a second Skales we don’t know about?

Putting Skales and bars in the same sentence is a sacrilege!

Trying to force class on yourself because you enjoy a certain kind of music is capping at its best! Especially if you’re dropping names of artists who aren’t even pioneers in the genre you enjoy—unless, of course, you’re just here to cap as usual.

Music means something different to many people. In a group, the interpretation or meaning each person gives to a particular song is likely to differ if we seek everyone's opinions or thoughts about it.

As a matter of fact, I once sat in the same vehicle with a professor who played Obesere's music throughout our journey. The annoying part is that this man doesn’t understand a single word of Yoruba, yet he was blasting Obesere of all people! My guy skipped all the King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey and went straight to Obesere, whom most people from back in the day would consider “an agbero.” Las las, to each his own, abeg!

I agree with the general thrust of your post

but

Actually, Skales started out as a Rapper and he was quite good.

First time I heard Skales was on Jeremiah Gyang's Kauna Allah in which he featured as a rapper and he did acquit himself well.

Take a listen. Skales come on at the 3.05 minutes mark.

Bro… Skales was not a good or decent rapper. It’s funny you mentioned Jeremiah ft. Skales because I still listened to that song this morning, and Skales was just there—nothing special. In fact, if you erased Skales from that song, it would still be a hit because of Jeremiah’s hard work and talent, not Skales.

By the way, I’m not hating on Skales, but he’s not someone any music head should brag about. At his best, he’s not even an average artist. Las las…I respect his hustle!
